Till Death do us apart

It was 11 in the morning and he had still not been able to concentrate on his work, he slammed the file on the glass topped table in disgust. What was he doing? he asked himself the millionth time .......running his fingers through his hair he jerked his head as if trying to jerk all thoughts in his mind but to no avail. He cast an astray look on his surrounding ....sunshine flooded the entire room cascading through the wall to ceiling windows. The intensity of the heat diminished largely due to the central air conditioning in the building, the walls were a colour of the bright blue sky reflecting the light radiated by the sunbeams. He walked over to the windows his footsteps muffled by the thick carpet and looked down, outside a sea of traffic stood at a standstill, he could see people scurrying about doing their daily chores and hear the faint sounds of car horns blaring.... disinterested he walked away breathing deeply.

Sitting down heavily on the leathered chair he gave one last futile attempt to make some sense of the project he'd been working on..... the meeting was scheduled in an hour and he had no clue as to what exactly he was going to present. Another fifteen minutes and he gave up all thought of even trying to read. He closed his eyes and leaned back on the chair his head tilted back resting on the head rest. He could not control the train of thoughts that kept reverting to the one important person in his life...his wife Prachi. Just her thought numbed his senses ,events raced through his mind. So much had changed since their marraige ....his anger had now turned to a deep rooted guilt..try as he might he could not shake off the feeling that he was responsible for her sorrow. He pictured her in the lilac saree at the Janmashtami , she'd called all his friends from the chawl to celebrate that day with him because she knew it was important for HIM....He was perplexed at her attitude....Kya yeh bhi sab uska natak hai?Is all if this her act? he asked himself . Kya is main bhi us ki koi chaal hai? Magar agar hai to kiya? Woh kiya chahti hai mujhsey? Is this a scheme of hers? But if it is then what? What does she want from me? So many questions yet he had answers to none.

Just then there was a knock at the door "Come in" he said. " Sir woh Korean delegates aa gaye hain , hum ney unhain conference room main bithaya hai." Sir the Korean delegates have arrived we have seated them in the conference room "Theek hai tum chalo main aata huun." Fine you go on I'm coming " Saala eik to dimagh ki bhi dahi ban gayi hai soch soch ker ....." Oh God my mind's a big curd bowl right now he cursed himself for not being prepared for the meeting, swiftly gathering his things he checked all the items and strode out of the office.

Part 2

She walked over to her bedroom in silence, the day's work had been done and she was now retiring to her bedroom.

"Prachi beta Milind nahin aaya ab tak?" Prachi hasn't Milind come till yet? she looked up at her mother questioning her about her husband's whereabouts a concerned look in her eyes.....about something she didn't have the faintest idea of.

"Ji woh abhi aatey hi hongey ....meri baat hui thii unkey secretary sey , woh keh rahey they Milind abhi abhi nikley hain." He'll be arriving soon I just had a word with his secretary he told me Milind has left for home " Acha mainey aaj halwa banaya hai Milind ko pasand hai na ..usey zarur dena ...." Ok I've made his favourite dessert today .... give it to him isi bahaney kuch kha legi maybe she'll eat some herself this way she thought eyeing her daughter worriedly. She knew Prachi didn't eat till Milind had his dinner and of late she had been noticing that the food kept for them at night remained untouched. This had caused her alarm to increase greatly. She knew her daughter's married life was not a smooth sailing one but somehow Prachi had managed to get along with Milind's mood swings and she herself had been advising her through the various ups and downs of life after marriage. But somehow today she felt Prachi was not the same she had found her distant and sad...she was her mother and could not turn a blind eye to her daughter's sorrow, yet she knew she was in no position to help her . All she could do was pray for their happiness. Wistfully she looked at her daughter's figure disappearing in her bedroom.

Prachi walked slowly to her bed and sat down at the corner her hands resting in her lap ,she looked up to find a much younger self of her smiling down from a portrait hung on the wall. This was she ...Prachi Shah and what was she now? Prachi Inder Shah or Prachi Milind Mishra.....or was it just Prachi? The Prachi everyone hated. She walked silently to the open window , the breeze causing the thin violet curtains to flow in a ryhtm ...she let the wind caress her cheeks the warm night breeze enbalmed her entire body. She stood there as if tranced, the moon shone brightly like a huge lantern bathing everything in a cool silvery light. She'd been waiting for Milind but she knew the wait was a long one.Kyun nahin aata aap ko yaqeen merey pyaar per why can't you believe my love she questioned him in her vision. Kab samjheingey aap keh main aap sey ...pyaar kerney lagi huun. When will you understand... that I love you. She felt lost .......incomplete without him and yet could not tell him how she felt...the pain this caused was unbearable , sometimes she had a strong desire to hold his hand and never let go .......a lone tear dropped from her eye . In the shadows someone watched that tear travel the whole length of her cheek to fall in the abyss below.

Part 3

He got out of the car and shut the metallic door with a thud, looking at the silvery path ahead of him he turned to face the moon shining brightly in the sky.He smiled childishly, all thoughts vanished momentarily. It was then that he caught sight of a silhouette in the window above, moving closer he made out Prachi's form looking intently at the same celestial object he had been so enthralled with a split second ago. A few more steps forward helped him to a better view of her bathed in the moon light , her eyes locked in a transfixed gaze and then she closed them letting the tears flow freely .He felt too touched to move. Neev key liye pareshan hogi she must be worried because of Neev he thought .Meri wajeh sey aaj yeh dono alag hain ...sirf meri wajeh sey. They are separated because of me... just because of me The thought alone was enough to tear his soul to shreds . How could he even breathe after committing such a sin. He alone was responsible for them being apart or so he thought. He walked slowly up the porch into the house. The lights were out but he could make out the form of the dining table and the couches , he made his way to the bar and sliding the stool slumped on it. Pouring himself a drink he propped his hands on the counter when suddenly he heard a faint sound behind him. Instantly lights shone in the hallway and he squinted in the gleaming light that engulfed the room .

"Beta tum kab aaye?" Son when did you come? Premlata asked him gently .."Woh bas abhi ..." Just now his voice trailed off. Slowly her eyes shifted from him to the crystal glass in his hand . He acknowledged her gaze and shifted his own from her to the glass. "Beta tumhain doctor ney in sab sey perhaiz key liye kaha hai , main yeh to nahin jaanti keh tum merey baarey main kiya sochtey ho lekin itna zarur jaanti huun keh eik maa key liye uskey saarey bachey eik jaisey hotey hain. Woh sab sey eik jitna hi pyaar kerti hai ,tum bilkul merey betey ki tarah ho or hameshaa raho gey" Son the doctor has asked you to abstain from this, I do not know what you think of me but i do know that for a mother all her children are equally important. She loves them all with the same capacity, you are my son and will always remain that for me as an after thought she added......."Prachi kab sey tumhara intizaar ker rahi hai ...main khana laga deti huun uskey saath kha lena..." Prachi has been waiting for you since long I'll serve dinner you can have it with her "Kyun usney nahin khaya?" Hasn't she had dinner? he questioned her as she turned to leave. She turned slightly "Tumharey bina woh khati hai kiya?" Does she dine without you? she smiled ruefully. Stunned at his forgetfulness he kept the glass on the counter the contents untouched and ascended the stair case , a slight urgency in his stride .

A few steps before the bedroom he stopped dead in his tracks, he heard voices. One he identified as Prachi's the other was not audible ...he moved closer ....should he go in? But he decided against it, he strained his ears to hear closely and in the process inched closer to the open doorway. He could see Prachi talking to someone "Neev main tum sey kitni baar keh chuki huun keh merey pati ki ghair hazri main, merey kamrey main mat aaya kero.. unhain yeh pasand nahin."Neev how many times have I told you not to enter my room in my husband's absence.. he doesn't like it. "Mujhey khushi hai Prachi keh tumhain ab Milind ki pasand or napasand ka khayaal rehney laga hai. Kabhi tumhain meri pasand ka khayaal rehta tha lekin khair" I'm glad you've come to understand Milind's likes and dislikes. There was a time you knew mine too anyways the sarcasm clear in his voice. "Tab baat or thi Neev tum or main rishton ki dor main nahin bandhey they lekin ab" That was different Neev you and I weren't bound by relationships now we are "Ab kiya Prachi ab bhi kuch nahin badla kam az kam merey liye to kuch nahin ..main to wahiin huun jahaan pehley tha .." Now what Prachi, nothing has changed for me , I still stand where I stood earlier. Sneering lightly to himself he smiled cruelly at his own thoughts. Or mujhey laga keh who mujh sey .Arey saala apna to time hi kharab hai And I thought that she had started loving me. My luck's bad as it is let them have their moment he thought after all after the divorce they would be getting together whether he liked it or not.

Part 4

"Nahin Neev pehley main or ab main farq hai" Neev there's a difference between now and then he heard Prachi as he turned to leave ..curiosity got the better of him and he stayed. He knew it was inappropriate to eavesdrop but he just had to listen to this conversation why was a question he himself had no clue to." Main ab Milind ki patni huun or tum Ayesha key pati.. main jaanti huun humari shaadi jin haalat main hui who sahi nahin they lekin is ka yeh matlab nahin keh rishta bhi ghalat hai..zaruri nahin keh insaan ko zindagi main sab kuch mil jaaye. Kayii baar jo insaan chahta hai who nahin hota lekin jo hota hai us main upper waley ki marzi shaamil hoti hai ..main apney rishtey sey buhut khush huun Neev or chahti huun keh tum bhi apney rishtey main aagey barho . Tum mera ateet ho Neev or Milind mera vartaman or bhavisher..or main nahin chahti key merey ateet ki wajeh sey merey vartaman per koi asar parey" I'm Milind's wife now and you are Ayesha's husband... I know our marriages weren't solemnized in the best of situations but that doesn't mean our relationships are wrong. Sometimes we don't really get what we want but whatever happens, happens for a reason with God's consent. I'm happy with my relationship Neev and I want you to go ahead with yours. You are my past while Milind is my present and future, I do not wish my past to overshadow my present.

From his vantage point he could see her move closer to Neev ..the strength in her voice reflected in her walk he was seeing her in a whole new light now." Lekin Prachi tum Milind key saath khush" But Prachi are you happy with Milind he tried reasoning. "Meri khushion ki fikr kerna chor do Neev ab merey pati meri khushion key zimmedar hain ormeri har khushi Milind sey shuru hoti hai or unhi per khatam". Don't worry about my happiness Neev because it starts and ends with Milind. The tone in her voice indicated an end to the subject and a slight shift in posture towards the wall confirmed the thought.

Had he heard her correctly he questioned himself in disbelief. Was all that she had just said true? He stood in the open doorway unable to move ,his feet rooted firmly to the spot. He knew he would be discovered yet the sudden revelation had numbed his senses . Consequently he came face to face with Neev who was now departing in haste. His battle having been lost halfway, he was picture of dejection. He ambled to the doorway shattered to the core and looked up to meet Milind's gaze. They both stared silently at each other for what seemed like eternity subsequently Neev was jolted to his senses. Glancing back one last time at the slender figure in the room he looked at Milind again. Milind read the message in his eyes loud and clear '"Uska khayaal rakhna Milind'.woh khush rahey is se zyaada mujhey kuch nahin chahiye" Take care of her Milind... I desire nothing more than her happiness.

And for once Milind understood ..understood his pleading eyes, understood his desire to keep Prachi safe, protected and happy .Did he not feel the same for her. Had he not wanted to do the same. Silently his eyes followed Neev down the corridor, defeat reflected in every step he took forward .He knew now he had lost her. Lost her to him ...her husband.

Us ney Neev sey yeh kyun kaha keh uski khushi mujh sey hai? Yeh konsa naya natak hai? Ya who sach much mujh sey.Nahin who aisa kaisey ker sakti hai who to Neev ko bachpan sey... or mainey bhi to kabhi usko koi khushi nahin di ..bas saala yeh dard bhi na. Sahi kehti hai who agar dard deney sey khushi milti to saaley sab khush hotey yahaan Why did she tell Neev that her happiness lies with me? Is this another farce of her's? Or does she really love me? But how can she, she and Neev have been together since childhood.. and I too have nevergiven her any happines.. Oh this pain. She is right if one could achieve happiness torturing others then everyone would be happy lost in his thoughts he had unconsciously walked inside his bedroom.

The slight thud of his feet on the doorstep startled her. She turned around to face him..he was so close to her at an arm's distance yet his eyes confirmed that he was equally distant."Aap kab aaye?" When did you come? she asked softly her eyes betraying her calm demeanor. Her face tear stained yet aglow with an unexplainable satisfaction, the amalgamation of both blessing her a divinity he was quick to notice."Bas thori der pehley " A few minutes ago he replied . Her heart missed a beat . Had he seen Neev with her? Did he hear it all or had he just come to assume everything wrongly? Her perplexion did not escape him. "Maa ney khana laga diya hai .. humain neechay bulaya hai". Mom has laid the table, she's called us down for dinner. Glad with the change in subject she nodded in approval and they both headed for the dining table downstairs.

Once seated Premlata lovingly forced them to eat, happy to see that they did not object to her bustling about them. Yet Milind realized all was not at peace. One look at her and he knew she was upset so much so that she had not taken any keen interest in the food Premlata had heaped infront of her. "Acha beta raat buhut ho gayi hai ab main chalti huun. Prachi beta tum yeh sab kitchen main rakh dena or haan Milind kal office sey jaldi ghar aa jaana..kal ghar main puja hai." Ok children now I must leave as it is late. Prachi keep the leftover food in the fridge and Milind try coming home early tomorrow there's a prayer in the house. Smiling she left them to continue with their meal. "Ab kal konsi puja hai?" What prayer? he asked irritated as he had a hectic schedule lined up for the next day. "Woh baba ney rakhwai hai kal puja aapkey or '' Baba has arranged it for you and.. her voice trailed off , her eyes focused momentarily on him then gently lowered to her plate. She knew he hated the entire ordeal of having to act as a good husband to her but was compelled to because of his father. "Acha .." Oh came his reply his tone greatly softened, she looked up to meet his gaze . "Mainey baba sey kaha bhi tha keh aap busy hongey . Lekin woh." I told Baba you would be busy... but he. She tried clarifying.

"Main aa jaunga" I'll come came his prompt reply. Just then his cell phone rang out the tone echoing in the silent premises. "Hello. Haan Mr Sharma kal..haan kal ki meeting schedule .Kal bank manager sey bhi appointment hai ..sab workers ki salary..acha hmm lekin zara jaldi kal mujhey zaruri kaam hai.Ok" Hello. Yes Mr Sharma... yes tomorrow's meeting schedule...Tomorrow there's an appointment with the bank manager too... yes the worker's salary...yes.. hmm.. but a bit fast I have some important work tomorrow. ok ending his conversation he found Prachi returning from the kitchen she had finished clearing the table and now awaited him to accompany her to their room.

Part 5

The dining table was bustling with activity. All of them were busy having breakfast while Prachi and Premlata served them. Suyesha was trying her level best to feed "Whisky" Alaap's toast while he pleaded her to let him eat in peace through gritted teeth. Though amusing as it was it failed to bring a smile on his face.

"Milind beta, malum hai na aaj puja hai ghar per." Milind son you know there's a prayer at home today "Ji baba maa ney bataya tha." Yes Baba maa had informed me.

"To beta phir zara jaldi aaney ki koshish kerna." Then try coming in early today He smiled half heartedly at his father. A puja for him and Prachi, the whole idea appeared nonsensical to him. He could fool his father not the Almighty yet he was compelled to play along. He stood up to leave "Suniye" Listen he turned slightly "who mujhey bazaar jaana tha puja ki samagiri leney.Main khud chali jaati lekin abhi tak driver nahin aaya or samaan jaldi laana hai phir ghar main or kaam bhi hain." I had to go to the market to buy things for the prayers. I would've gone on my own but the driver hasn't come yet and there is other work to be done too. He listened to her explanation patiently "Theek hai " Fine he turned to leave. "Milind bazaar hi jaa rahey ho to Prachi ko bhi kuch shopping kerwa dena .Main dekh raha huun tum usey bilkul waqt nahin detey. Kitney din ho gaye tum dono kahiin eik saath nahin gaye."Milind if you are taking her along then get her to do some shopping for herself. I see you hardly spare time for her these days. "Par baba .." But Baba he attempted to deny the task keeping in mind the fact that he was already late and had an important meeting. "Nahin main kuch nahin sunna chahta, bas ab Prachi beta jaldi sey tayyar ho jao or shaam key liye shopping ker lo" No I'm listening to any excuse. Prachi get ready soon and go shop for something to wear in the evening having said this his father resumed his prior activity of eating breakfast enjoying Nain Tara's silly remarks.

The mall was crowded with people. He had brought her to an exclusive designer's boutique yet she looked around hesitantly. The price tags on most of the dresses was a hefty amount and she knew he toiled away at the office to earn his rightful dues. "Kuch pasand aaya?" Do you like anything? he inquired. "Meri samajh main kuch nahin aa raha, sab hi saarian itni khubsurat hain in main sey chunna mushkil hai. Aap hi kuch madad ker dijiye." I can't decide all of these are such beautiful sarees. Will you help me choose. Obediently he sifted through the pile lightly fingering a turquoise blue chiffon saree with delicate pearls and silver thread work adorning the border and pallu but before he could advise her his cell fone rang out. "Jo kuch khareedna hai jaldi khareed ley merey paas zyaada time nahin hai" Buy whatever you want to buy fast I really don't have time for this he stated thrusting his credit card in her hand and walked away to answer the call.

Quickly making up her mind she asked the sales girl to pack two sarees. She then walked over to the men's section , rummaging through their wardrobe the previous night she had decided on buying some new clothes for him. Sorting through the rack she found a kurta salwar that struck her fancy Yeh Milind per acha lageyga this will look good on him she smiled to herself.

"Main tum log ko yahaan kaam kerney paisey deta huun ayyashi kerney key liye nahin" I pay you people to work not to have a nice time here he bellowed. His anger had crossed all limits having just gotten off the phone with the bank manager he was shocked to learn of a cash withdrawal during his absence a few weeks before. "Lekin sir." But Sir "Lekin kiya" But what he cut him short. "Dekhiye sir company account sey.." Listen sir the money from the company account "Company account sey ya to main paisey nikalwa sakta huun ya tuu. Main ney to paisey nikalwaye nahin to phir kahaan gaye paisey. Jaldi bata nahin to aaj teri naukri key saath tuu bhi khatam" Either I can withdraw cash from the company account or you. I didn't .. that leaves you. Now tell me exactly what you did with my money or else you'll be finished he snarled moving towards his accountant menacingly .Beads of sweat were now running freely down the accountants forehead "Dekhiye sir paisey mainey hi nikalwaye they lekin apney liye nahin" Yes sir I did withdraw the cash but not for my own use he blurted out the truth. Sighing in relief he was caught offgaurd as Milind grabbed him by the collar thoroughly shaking his thin form. "To phir kis key liye nikalwaye they terey baap ka paisa tha kiya jo mujhey bina bataye ley liya." Then who did you get it for was it your father's that you took it without my permission. " Sir who paisey mainey Sukriti madam key kehney per nikalwaye they" Sir I withdrew the money on Sukriti madam's orders he confessed.

"Sukriti" he echoed in disbelief why would Sukriti need such a large amount of cash and why would she not inform him about the withdrawal. There had been no recent dealings with any new company and no cash payment had been drawn to his notice. Seeing him confused Mr Sharma was only too quick to release himself from his master's iron grip. "Sir agar aap ko mujh per yaqeen nahin to bank manager sey puch lein unhon ney hi fone per Sukriti madam sey baat ki thi." Sir if you don't believe me you can call up the bank manager. He was the one who had talked to Sukriti madam earlier Remembering that he had ordered no payment to be made above half a million in his absence or without an official permission he was forced to accept his accountant's clarification. Grabbing the phone he quickly dialed Sukriti's number but the machine answered instead denying her presence. He then tried her cell number but that too was unreachable, frustrated he slammed the phone down. First Prachi and now Sukriti. The two most important women in his life were hell bent on making him miserable and he was not going to allow that. He hurriedly exited the office all thoughts of the evening's occasions had taken a back seat for the moment. He was too confused to make anything out of the situation, he trusted his sister and knew that it could only be a grave situation for her to act in this unexplainable fashion. He feared for her safety . Sukriti ney mujhey kyun nahin bataya Why didn't Sukriti tell me anything this sole thought kept repeating in his mind. Driving slowly through the thick evening traffic he was angered at his delay on reaching home. He wanted to know the truth from Sukriti herself untill that happened he wouldn't be at peace. The dull ache in his head had now transformed in a throbbing head ache, he rubbed his temples with his thumb and forefinger trying to ease the pain. His eyes were bloodshot and registered many sleepless nights yet his physical suffering could not match his mental turmoil. Still not able to believe his accountant he called the bank manager."Mr Sandeep main Milind Mishra bol raha hun, mujhey 4 th September key merey company account sey cash withdrawal ki details chahiye." Mr Sandeep I'm Milind Mishra speaking, I need details for a cash withdrawal from my account on the fourth of September. "Ji Mr Mishra" Yes Mr Mishracame a static reply "Sir purey do crore ki withdrawal hui thi , main ney confirmation key liye Ms Sukriti sey fone per baat bhi ki thi aapkey accountant ko cash handover kerney sey pehley". Yes sir it was a withdrawal of two crores before handing over the cash I had a word with Ms Sukriti. His worst fears being confirmed he ended the call silently.

Part 6

She glanced at the silver time piece on her bed side yet again..he was late. The puja her father in law had so lovingly arranged for them started in exactly half an hour. Tired of pacing impatiently in her bedroom for the umpteenth time she decided on getting ready for the occasion. He had arrived at the house completely lost in his thoughts only to find the preparations for the evening's occasions underway Oh aaj to puja hai he remembered instantly Oh today there was supposed to be a prayer ..making way to his bedroom he entered it noiselessly, the lights had been turned off , she probably wasn't around he assumed. Advancing slowly he sat down on the bed weariness evident from his posture he freed himself from his coat and dropped his head in his palms mercilessly pressing his temples with his thumbs. He was tired beyond that confused and distressed .. he longed for a hot shower and a piping cup of tea, the latter having a very soothing effect on him always. Yet he knew he was awaited for downstairs. Sighing inwardly he cast aside any thoughts of the afore imagined comforts and studied the room. Everything looked intact yet somehow something seemed amiss. Precisely then the door to the changing room opened and she walked out. She was clad in the turquoise blue saree he had absent mindedly fingered in the boutique that morning. He smiled ..she was unaware of his presence in the room and carried on with her activities, walking over to the windows again she peered down hoping to find any sign of him .Yeh Milind kahaan reh gaye. Where is Milind she wondered aloud puja ka samay honey waala hai.Aaj subah kuch pareshaan bhi lag rahey they.Pata nahin abhi taka aye kyun nahin. Phone bhi nahin kiya .... It's almost time for the prayers. He looked disturbed today in the morning i wonder what is the matter. He hasn't even called, I don't know why he hasn't come till yet her concern for him was evident from her monologue. He was surprised she was concerned for his whereabouts yet he could not consider this as an act there was no one there besides them. His presence still unknown to her. Walking over to the full length mirror she switched on the lights it was then that she saw him."Aap" You she managed recovering from her surprise how long had he been there she had no clue yet she realized his anguish instantly. "Aap ki tabiyat to theek hai?" Are you feeling alright? she asked alarmed at his weariness and evident pain. Walking slowly she stopped a few inches away from him. " Aap theek to hain?" Are you ok? she asked again this time he looked up to meet her anxious gaze. " Main theek huun" I'm fine he stood up rubbing his forehead roughly he ran his fingers through his hair ."Tu tayyar ho gayi ." Are you ready? "Haan bas aapka intizaar ker rahi thi" Yes I was just waiting for you " Main bas abhi tayyar ho jaata huun" I'll just change and get ready he turned to collect his clothes from the wardrobe when he chanced to see a kurta salwar pressed and laid out for him. "Yeh kiska hai?" Who's is this? he inquired "Ji yeh aapkey liye nikala tha mainey aaj puja khaas aapkey liye hai or woh white kurta to aap kayi baar pehen chukey hain is liye main ney socha aaj aap yeh pehen lain." I took this out for you since the prayers are held for you specially and you have worn that white kurta countless times earlier.

"Mainey yeh nahin pucha keh yeh yahaan kyun hai mainey pucha key yeh kiska hai" I didn't ask you why it's here I asked you who does it belong to he inquired again his question painfully clear "Agar tereyko lagta hai keh main terey bhai key utrey huey kaprey pehnun ga to yeh teri ghlat fehmi hai.." If you think I'm going to wear your brother's hand me downs you're mistaken he threw the garment aside in disgust "Lekin mainey to" But I she started to say "Lekin tuney socha keh mujhey kuch pata nahin chaleyga arey jab mainey aisa koi kurta khareeda hi nahin to yeh mera kaisey hua or jo cheez meri nahin usey main apney paas nahin rakhta" But you thought I wouldn't find out. When i never bought such a garment how can it be mine and I don't wear things that don't belong to me he lashed out angrily. She hung her head in silence her hazel eyes misty with tears she fought hard to hold back. He watched her fish for his credit card from her purse and hand it over to him "Aaj jo shopping ki thi uska bill"Today's shopping bill she added handing him the slip of paper which confirmed the purchase of the garment that morning.

He was stung with remorse why did he have to be so harsh with her he chided himself as he watched her leave the room , she'd bought it for him and he had misunderstood her. Cursing himself for his behaviour he proceeded to get ready. Brushing his hair one last time he took an overall view of himself. Not bad he thought the pale silver of the kurta provided a fresh look to his appearance he confessed to himself that it was an elegant choice on her behalf. He saw her reflection walk in with a tea cup in her hand . "Chai.." Tea she stated handing him the cup of tea he had been dreaming of a couple of minutes earlier.Meeting his gaze she explained " Aapkey sar main dard tha na is liye ..aap jaldi neechay aa jayiye pundit ji aa gaye hain" You had a headache that's why... you should come down now the pundit has also arrived.

" Tuu kyun sochti hai hai merey baarey main itna" Why do you think about me so much he couldn't control himself." Main tereyko koi khushi nahin deta kabhi teri qadar nahin ki phir bhi tuu mera itna khayal rakhti hai ..kyun? " I never make you happy, I've never treasured you still you care for me...why? he was pouring his heart out to her '.why '..She was perplexed at his attitude ..minutes before he was storming at her and now he wanted to know why she did everything that she did for him. Not being able to come up with a suitable reply she looked up to him study her intently. He had hurt her he knew '.but he wanted her to know how he felt for her."Sab neechay humara intizaar ker rahey hain" Everyone's waiting for us downstairs she walked past him yet in that instant her haste got the better of her. Her loose hair got entangled in the intricate bead work of his kurta and she was forced to stop abruptly. Trying her best to free her hair she was drawn closer to his rugged form. But even after countless attempts when she failed to free them she let out a soft moan. Watching her work away at her strands he was amused at her proximity to him. Finally when he realized she'd had enough he slid his arm around her slim waist and drew her closer. He felt her body tighten at this sudden maneuver while he tried helping her their fingers brushed against each other sending cool shivers down her spine. Her heart fluttered in her rib cage she was dazed at his closeness and could feel his breath on her cheek yet she kept her cool and having finally accomplished her task she waited for him to free her of his embrace.. seeing her shift nervously in his arms he tightened his grip slightly not wanting to let her go, placing his index finger on her chin he raised her face to his own..she looked breath takingly beautiful her delicate features were highlited with a subtle touch of make up . He was mesmerized by her beauty. Suddenly overcome by an urge to stop time. Let the moment last for eternity..she was tranced by his actions breathing slowly she had mustered up strength to return his passionate gaze. Her hands resting against his chest she could feel his heart beat violently in that one hypnotic moment they both knew knew that all was not finished.

Before she could call out to him she was dumbstruck to find him gazing lovingly at Prachi................she twisted her fingers in fury ....how could he...how could he fall for that Prachi ....the Prachi who was responsible for her misery , she could not lose Milind to her .....and she would not she vowed to herself....she'd kept her peace because of Milind's father's health but she would not let Prachi walk over her glory ......her Milind ....this time she'd get him back ...at all costs.

Part 7

The puja had been a memorable event, throughout the ceremony his eyes had followed her 'during the performance of the rituals they had both sat together listening to the pundit chant mantras for their well being '.he had watched her clasp her hands and pray with closed eyes the serenity of the atmosphere etched on her face and he had closed his in return to ask for happiness'her happiness'.she had felt so close to him that entire evening 'as if they had been blessed by the Gods themselves...... while she distributed Prasad among the guests he was only too keen to help her . Yet all this had not gone unnoticed .In a secluded part of the hallway Ayesha had watched him closely her eyes following his 'she stood fuming , unable to do anything yet her mind was vigilant '..sipping her drink noiselessly her eyes gleamed with satisfaction '..a cruel smile on her lips'.she had masterminded yet another devious plan'.

He had attended the puja only because Daadi and Premlata had wanted him to'.he had not wanted to be a part of this '..yet he was there in flesh and blood 'smiling'praying and trying to act normal'..from the looks of it he had put up a pretty good act. He had watched Milind and Prachi too '.but somehow he did not feel bitter today on the contrary a sense of relief had swept through him to see her smile shyly at Milind '..he was happy to see that Prachi was happy '.that Milind could not take his eyes off her and that the entire household was reveling in their happiness. He had seen Ayesha too smiling slyly to herself in a remote corner of the room. Knowing her well enough he knew she was upto something 'something that was hazardous to the celebrations at hand , he knew he had to stop her from ruining a perfect moment for them all.

"Aap ney Ayesha ko dekha maa?" he asked Premlata his eyes furtively scanning the crowd' he had just taken his eyes off her for a moment and she was gone amidst the medley of movement and lights. He was agitated at his negligence and wanted to redeem his blunder instantaneously . " Abhi to yahin thi Milind key saath'dekho beta yahin kahin hogi" and Premlata had walked off to attend to another guest. Milind'.. his head started reeling 'what could Ayesha be doing with Milind, why was he not with Prachi.....thoughts ran through his mind ,something was wrong 'Milind would not leave the puja arranged specially for him and Prachi just to talk to Ayesha....he had to find her....he started running down the stairs when he caught sight of her turning out of the doorway '.he followed her out in the front lawn trying to keep up with her quick pace.."Ayesha"'. he called out to her but she showed no signs of stopping. Desperately trying to catch up with her he tripped on a protruded root and fell. The night breeze was chilly , the grass in the lawn wet with dew 'his clothes were damp after the fall.He scoured the floodlit lawn again but she was nowhere in sight, he could not give up now '"Ayesha"...he called out again.

Ayesha knew Neev had followed her and had led him on'.today was the day when she would get back her right in Milind's life, the only plausible way of doing that was to destroy all ties he had with Prachi 'and she very well knew how to. Briskly she ascended the wooden bridge spanning the pool. At a calculated moment she halted behind Milind''out of the corner of her eye she watched Neev follow suit.

He had been trying to avoid her since long but he knew the chances of her taking the hint were limited'.he knew she was madly in love with him and would go to any extent to attain him..yet lately his fervor to exact revenge from her had greatly diminished'..he'd hardly felt any pang of jealousy when he'd seen her perform the aarti alongside Neev '.so had he stopped loving her'.somehow some small voice in his head affirmed the thought'his heart now beat truly for his wife'Prachi. When she had asked him to talk about something important he had been perturbed...."Kyun bulaya tuney mereyko yahaan Ayesha?"he had asked her without turning back to face her, irritation evident from his tone.

" Tuu phir sey us Prachi key liye pagal ho gaya na Milind" '.he heard her scream " fiker honey lagi hai na tereyko uski, lekin tuu samajhta kyun nahin keh who sab uska natak hai".

" Dekh Ayesha who natak karey ya mereyko bewaquf banaye lekin sach to yehi hai keh Baba uski wajah sey theek ho gaye hain or main nahin chahta keh teri wajah sey unko koi takleef puhunchey" he had stated plainly not pleased at her remarks about Prachi.

" Tereyko lagta hai main Baba ko takleef puhunchaungi Milind?" she had asked her voice cracked with emotion " Main kabhi tereyko takleef nahin puhuncha sakti Milind ..main to terey se pyaar kerti huun , phir main kaisey chahungi tera bura"

" Ayesha baat ab sirf teri nahin mujhey ab baba ko sanbhalna hai'or agar who mujhey Prachi key saath khush dekhna chahtey hain to yehi sahi'aakhir who meri patni hai or uski taraf bhi meri koi zimmedari hai"...he had to tell her the truth the fact that now she did not have a strong hold over his heart and that he was beginning to give his marraige another shot.

Feeling all was lost she turned hysterical "Tereyko sirf apni zimmedari yaad hai or main '" she asked turning him around and cupping his face "Kya tuu us Prachi key liye mujhey bhuul gaya hai Milind? Kya tuu who raat bhi bhuul gaya jo hum ney saath guzaari thi'who nazeeki who apnapan 'sab kuch bhul gaya hai kya tuu?" she was crying now her tears wetting his kurta the stains visible . "Us raat jo kuch hua who sirf eik ghalati thi Ayesha or kuch nahin'..or us baat key liye main apney aap ko kabhi maaf nahin ker sakta'..lekin is ka yeh matlab nahin keh mujhey ab bhi teri chah hai Ayesha''haan teri parwah zarur hai lekin pyaar nahin".

His words felt like molten lead to her ears'he didn't love her..then who did he love? Prachi ? having taken everything away from her now she had managed to take away her reason to live too. She looked at him aghast '.this information new to her.

Standing in the distance Neev had heard it all yet he could not presume this as true.Milind could not have slept with Ayesha'..he had seen love reflect clearly in Milind's eyes but for Prachi alone'..yet there they were, he, repenting his unconscious act and she defiant on deeming it as love'.what could he do now, as fate would have it he was not in a position to apprehend either of them for this sinful act'..yet he knew how devastated Prachi would be on learning the truth about her husband's one night stand'...so this was Ayesha's way of bringing Milind back in her life'by blackmailing him into accepting her or facing the consequences of Ayesha narrating this event to Prachi. He was torn between his desire to tell Prachi about this and his want to know the entire truth'and in that one instant Neev realized that he had to find out the truth the real one behind the one Ayesha had forged'..He knew Milind ,he knew he was possessive, arrogant and a complete fool at times but he certainly could not stoop so low as to commit such a sinful act.

Shaking himself free from Ayesha's grasp Milind decided to return back inside when he saw Neev walk out of the shadows. Astonished at his presence there he watched him walk up to where he stood facing him , he could see anger welling in his eyes and realized that he had heard it all. "Tum itney gir jaogey yeh mainey kabhi socha bhi nahin tha Milind .." he heard his voice , the words so venomous they cut through his soul. "Tumhain kiya laga Milind keh tumhari is ghatia harkat ka kisi ko pata nahin chaleyga'.lekin ab main chup nahin rahunga, main Prachi ko tum dono ki sachai zarur bataunga'." he confessed bitterly "usey bhi to pata chaley keh uska pati us ki kitni parwah kerta hai. Arey mainey to socha tha keh tum Prachi sey pyaar kertey ho, usey mujh sey zyaada khush rakhogey lekin tum'.arey tum to kisi ko khush dekh hi nahin saktey to phir kaisey khayaal aata tumhain Prachi ka'.socha nahin tum ney eik baar bhi keh uskey dil per kya guzreygi yeh sab jaan ker'.jawab do mujhey.." seeing him stand motionless take all his wrath submissively only aggravated his rage, he grabbed him by his arms and shook him vehemently venting his anger .

"Roz sochta huun ''.." Milind had answered his voice reflecting his obvious guilt and the pain that followed. He freed himself from Neev's grip and walked away his steps faltering slightly . For him it had been the end 'end to his newfound love for his wife,an end to his happiness he had wished with her'.and an end to life itself ''because life to him started and ended with his wife''his Prachi.

He was too distraught to move?.to go back inside and face them all, yet he knew he had to?he had to till his guilt ate him inside and fate would have mercy on him. His spirit had blown apart, he felt as though his chest would burst with sorrow his heart bleeding till it ceased to beat. Apparently he could not take it any more, mumbling an excuse to his father he found his car keys and drove away in the stillness of the night.
She was unaware of his exit and clueless of his whereabouts .Kahaan hain Milind she thought to herself, her eyes searching his familiar form. ? Milind ko dhund rahi haina tuu?woh nahin hai yahaan? she spun around to see Ayesha staring at her. Her hawk eyes ripping Prachi?s existence to pieces. ?Woh chala gaya hai or ab main usey teri zindagi main wapas kabhi nahin aaney duungi?yeh yaad rakhna tuu? she warned Prachi ,her index finger raised threateningly at her face.
Outside in the front lawn Neev was still puzzled at what had happened just minutes before. A part of him had wanted to believe Ayesha and in the given circumstances any normal person would have but his heart felt otherwise. Something somewhere just didn?t feel right, resolving to find the truth he walked off inside.
The bar was filled with people , some swaying in rhythm to the remixed versions of latest movie songs, while others lounged in the far corners drinking incessantly. He was perched on a stool near the bar ,drunk. ?Eik aur? he ordered the bartender, placing his empty glass on the marble counter. ? Sir aap pehley hii buhut pii chukey hain? he had tried explaining.

?Terey paison kii pii hai kiya saaley? he swore grabbing him by the collar . ?Kitney paisey chahiye tereyko?yeh ley ? he snapped producing many valuable notes from his pocket and thrusting them in his hands. ?Jaisey aapki marzi sir,?the bartender had replied eyeing the money greedily. Placing a bottle of Scotch wine on the counter he had turned away. ?Matlabi saala? he had snickered removing the cap of the bottle. He raised it to his lips emptying the contents in his mouth , the fiery liquid burning his insides as it travelled down his throat. Yet he did not feel anything the fire within him was far too strong to be put out by any liquid.
In the backdrop the DJ played a melodious number the lyrics apt to his situation. He listened to it intently?.

?Sau dard hain , sau raahatein
Sab milaaaa dil nasheeeeen ik tuuuuu hi nahiin
Sau dard hain , sau raahatein
Sab milaaaa dil nasheeeeen ik tuuuuu hi nahiin.
Rukhi rukhi sii yeh hawa or sukhey pattey ki tarah
sheher ki sarkon pey main laawaris urta hua .
Sau raastey per teri raah nahin.
Sau dard hain , sau raahatein
Sab milaaaa dil nasheeeeen ik tuuuuu hi nahiin?

Images of Prachi flashed in his mind?s eye , clad in the turquoise saree that evening, her smile, her lips, her innocence, the sparkle in her eyes?..his fist closed tightly around the delicate crystal glass unable to bear the pressure it had shattered in his palm , the crystal shards embedded deep in his flesh. He had opened his palm to see blood trickle from the open gashes the shards had made. He smiled in mock content, Ab to dard ka ehsaas bhi khatam ho gaya hai , log kehtey hain pyaar main dil jalta hai , per apni to saali yahaan duniya hi jal gayi .Laughing insanely at his thoughts he proceeded to finish the bottle altogether.

Tired of looking for him inside she had walked out of the house , not seeing his car parked at it?s place she knew he had taken off. She was bewildered at his behaviour that evening, he had showered her with attention the whole time only to desert her midway. Tears formed in her eyes, it was then that she saw Neev coming towards her. ? Tum yahaan?? he questioned . ?Milind ko dhund rahi thi ..na jaaney kahaan chaley gaye hain?kuch bataya bhi nahin.? He could see the unshed tears in her eyes her tone indicating her worry for him. ? Tum pareshaan mat ho yahin kahin hoga, main dekhta huun? he had tried consoling her, surprised at his own behaviour . He could not understand why all of a sudden he had developed a soft spot for Milind in his heart. Was it because he knew he had won over Prachi or because he genuinely felt for him. Whatever the reason he would try finding him.

He knew a few hangouts where Milind preferred to spend time away from home. He had checked out all except one?his mind racing with thoughts he parked his car in the lot and sprinted to the bar?s enterance. Straining his eyes for a clearer look in the dimly lit pub he could make out a familiar form hunched at the counter. Could it be him?.it was worth a shot. Making his way amidst the frenzied crowd he reached Milind, only to find him drunk to the core. Helping him up he had succeeded in bringing him safely home listening to his senseless talk , all the while questioning his own motive behind his actions.
The house was silent indicating that everyone had slept, he helped Milind inside guiding his staggering form. On reaching his bedroom he had placed his swaying figure on the bed?.Prachi had been awake waiting for them and was shocked to see Milind , she had not expected him to to be out drinking after the puja. ?Sanbhalo apney pati ko? Neev had taunted icily.

?Milind? , she had called out in dismay?..he could hear her voice ??far far away. Groggily he had opened his blood rimmed eyes to meet her tender ones. He winced as she tried making him comfortable. Her hand brushed his and she was shocked to see the blood stains on her own. ? Yeh khoon..? she quickly checked out his palm and suppressed a gasp on seeing it , blood dripping from his fresh wounds. Swiftly she fetched the first aid kit cleaning his hand she delicately picked out the remains of the crystal glass, then bandaged it carefully. He had tried removing his hand away?a futile effort on his part , she had clasped his hand in hers firmly, while attending to it.
?Yeh sab kaisey hua? Aap kahaan gaye they? Malum hai main kitna pareshaan ?.? she stopped in mid sentence. ?Prachi? he had whispered ?.a sharp pain had punctured her heart as he called out to her. His voice though heavily intoxicated was painfully clear to her. ?Main terey qaabil nahin huun Prachi? he had mumbled closing his eyes to release the tears imprisoned in them. He was heavily drunk yet his guilt had not let him pass out in an unconscious realm. The alcohol had drugged him considerably but his mind was filled with words?words that seemed to tumble over one another ?not make any sense?yet they did to her. She sat by his side weeping silently as he babbled the truth . ? Main terey sey buhut pyaar kerta huun ?.Prachi?..tuu meri zindagi hai?us Ayesha sey to sirf badla lena tha mujhey??terey bina main jee nahin paaunga??Prachi?. She gaped at him in stunned silence ,watching him in that state had saddened her and listening to his admittance of love had caused her tears to flow more freely. She placed her head on his chest , her tears seeping in his shirt. She could hear his heart, beat ..pounding against the walled protection of his rib cage as if desirable to be freed of it?s imprisonment?.beating for her. He loved her?.not Ayesha?it was she , he wanted to spend his life with. Her heart was filled with love for him as she closed her eyes? ?Main bhi aap sey buhut pyaar kerti huun?.? she had confessed. He had passed out unable to hear her confession but standing in the doorway Neev had. He had been repentant about his behaviour towards her and thinking that she might need help with Milind he had decided to return when he heard her confess her love for him. Watching her weep bitterly , her head resting on his chest he had turned back without a single word.

Part 9

He awoke with a start, his head throbbing with the after effects of the alcohol consumed the previous night. He tried to move and was taken aback to see her sleeping peacefully , her head resting on his chest. He had been propped against the pillows and now his body ached yet he could not move lest he would interrupt her slumber. She looked so innocent in sleep an angelic glow encircled her face, he was bewitched by her proximity to him?..her warmth penetrating deep within his own. Yet she was a dream to him?.a dream he feared would be shattered soon. Events of the previous night flashed through his mind, he remembered drinking at the pub clearly after that his thoughts turned fuzzy??.closing his eyes again he waited for her to wake up.

She had awoken to find him still asleep, alarmed at the realization that she?d slept near him , she inched away slowly so as not to disturb him . Remembering his confession of love for her she smiled shyly and turned back to gaze at him. He looked tired and worn out a pained expression highlighted his face even as he slept. Vowing to take extra care of him she had left to perform her morning chores. She felt too happy for words, her heart beat joyously as she prepared his breakfast. He loved her?the thought alone had her mesmerized to the soul?..his in deliberate confession the night before had turned her whole life around. Returning back to her room she found him trying to button his shirt, his injured hand being of little help he gave up in despair. She set the breakfast tray on the side table and turned to him. Her fingers nimbly attended to the buttons all the while glancing at his face. Her beauty had him fascinated?she was the woman he loved gentle, warm and completely unselfconscious about her beauty. She smiled when their eyes met, ?Nashta? she stated turning around to pour him a cup of tea. He couldn?t help but notice a pleasant change in her. While trying to eat his breakfast he was faced with the same dilemma , try as he might he cudn?t break off portions of bread to go with the omelet. She kept watching for a few minutes then seating herself on the bed beside him she proceeded to feed him bite sized portions of his breakfast. He was rather surprised by this gesture. " Tuu rehney dey main kha lunga? he had said. ?Aap jaldi nashta nahin kareingey to thanda ho jayega , or thanda khana aapko pasand nahin hai na?? she had replied humorously ,lovingly putting the food in his mouth. Seeing there was no way out he had resigned to her wish willingly.

He had spent the night tossing and turning , her confession of love for Milind had left him dazed. She loved Milind ?well he had no doubts about that before hand so it was not much of a shock but what perplexed him was the fact that she was unaware of Milind?s relationship with Ayesha? Kaisey bataun main usey yeh sachaii ?.or agar yeh sach nahin to?woh to tuut jayegi ?ab mujhey hii kuch kerna hoga. He knew Ayesha would never tell him the truth straightaway, to wheedle it out from her he?d have to think on the same lines as her. He?d have to stoop low enough for her to believe that he was on her side only then would he able to have an insight on the situation and in the process find the truth, it was an impossible task but he was determined to undertake it. Finding her getting dressed for office he decided to play his cards?. ?Kahin jaa rahi ho??he had asked her. She turned around feigning surprise at his question .

? Roz subah sarhey dus bajey main kahaan jaati hun Neev darling ,tereyko itna bhi yaad nahin?lagta hai us Prachi key kuch zyaada hi sapney dekhney laga hai ajkal.? she sneered at him .?Theek keh rahi ho Ayesha ?ab tak main sochta raha keh main Prachi ko bhulaney main kamyaab ho jaunga lekin aisa hua nahin?

?Aa gaya na apni auqat pey , isiliye main tereyko kehti thi keh merey saamney naatak mat kiya ker.? she laughed knowingly.?Waqai Ayesha tum hamesha sey sahi thii or main ghalat or ab main jaan gaya huun keh tum Milind or Prachi ko alag kerney ke liye jo bhi ker rahi ho bilkul theek ker rahi ho, agar is naik kaam main kabhi meri zarurat parey to mujhey zarur yaad kerna .? This was too much for her she?d never imagined him to switch sides so suddenly..

?Subah subah pii lii hai kiya tuuney ?? she joked coming closer to smell his breath. ?Lagta to nahin ?to phir Neev darling mujhey lagta hai tera bheja satak gaya hai?tuu or meri madad kareyga?.?

?Haan Ayesha agar apney pyaar ko paaney key liye tum har hadh paar ker sakti ho to main kyun nahin?asulan to mujhey tum per nazaraz hona chahiye , kyunki tumney Milind key saath?..lekin main aisa kuch nahin karunga kyunki main jaanta huun keh tum uss sey buhut pyaar kerti ho or ussey paaney main, main tumhara saath dunga.?

?Acha is main tera kiya faida hai. " ...she eyed him warily.

?Tum Milind ko paa lena or main Prachi ko?? he had smiled winking naughtily at her?..hoping she wouldn?t see through him.

Is ko kiya ho gaya hai? Milind had thought studying Prachi objectively as if newly aassessing her , she had not ceased smiling at him while he proceeded to prepare for going to the office....She chose a matching tie for his suit and helped him wear it .

?Aaj aap office sey jaldi aa saktey hain?? she inquired softly. ?Koi kaam hai tereyko? he had questioned in return ..

?Aaj Baba ka doctor key saath appointment hai main soch rahi thi aap bhi saath chaltey to aapka bhi zakham doctor ko dikha detey.? She had said genuinely concerned for his injured hand.

?Main koi bacha nahin huun jo itni sii chot per doctor key paas jaunga " he retorted what did she think he was a two year old ?..not being able to withstand the disappointed look on her face he?d consented subsequently . ? Theek hai koshish karunga. . ? and he?d seen her face light up immediately Abhi tak bachpana nahin gaya he had thought while walking out of the door.

He had hastened his tasks the entire day finishing off important assignments and finally heaved a sigh of relief while signing off the last document. Just then his secretary reminded him of a payment due to a company for purchase of a plot. He intended to buy a lucrative one near the coast planning to build a luxurious hotel ,one of a kind in the vicinity.Checking his balance with the bank manager he was disappointed to learn that he did not have enough liquid cash to affirm the deal the next day. Seeing his meticulous planning go to waste because of unavailability of immediate cash only thwarted his hopes. He had reached home to find Prachi ready to depart to the hospital with his father, seeing him there had raised her spirits and he could feel her radiating with happiness.

?Aap fresh ho jayiye main aapkey chai laati huun ? her concern for him had filled him with a deep ineffable pride, the fact that it was he, she cared about couldn?t help but bring a smile on his face.On reaching his room he lay down to rest, his head spinning from ranting away on possible business proposals to his subordinates the entire day. Closing his eyes he relaxed on the master bed , he stretched out his hand to the spot where she had lain beside him that morning, longing to feel her soft body warm against him.

Suddenly his hand touched an object , fumbling he found it to be a mobile. Prachi ka hoga he had thought placing it back when at that particular instant it buzzed alive?someone was calling . He thought he?d attend it for her, pressing the illuminated button he pressed the phone to his ear but before he could utter a single word a flabbergasted voice spoke up. ? Miss Sukriti main Doctor Prashant bol raha huun City Hospital sey . Jis aurat ko aapney kuch dinon pehley yahaan admit kerwaya tha uski haalat serious hai. Aapkey ilawa humarey pass uska or koi contact nahin hai or chunkey aap hii usey yahaan admit kerwa gayeein theen to ab aap hi unki zimmedar hain?waqt buhut kam hai please jaldi aaiyega.? In the backdrop he heard the continuous beeping of machines and the line dropped. He was confused Sukriti had got someone admitted in a hospital and had not informed him. Had she been involved in an accident, what was wrong with her these days he could not understand her distant behaviour towards him lately. She avoided him completely and now that he?d heard of her involvement in something so crucial as being responsible for a dying woman he was even more troubled. He sat upright his forehead creased with worry lines. Prachi had entered with the tea cup when she saw Sukriti?s mobile in his hand, afraid that he might have a go through her messages she tried to take it from him.

?Arey Sukriti apna mobile yahiin bhuul gayi main ussey dey aati huun.? She had hoped to ease it out but he held on it firmly. ?Main jaa ker usey khud dey dunga tuu tayyar ho jaa phir hospital bhi jaana hai?. ?Ji " she had replied well aware of the fact that it was no use trying.

Aakhir yeh kon aurat hai mujhey malum kerna hi hoga ?.he had thought while sipping his tea. ? Konsey Doctor ka appointment hai Baba ka ?? he had asked. ?Ji Doctor Prashant Mehra , City hospital main buhut achey Cardiologist hain? she had informed him unknowingly?.

Dr Prashant is sey to ab milna pareyga he thought keeping the empty cup on the table and standing up to leave.

Part 10

He had decided to have a word with Sukriti before he left for the hospital , as he turned down the corridor he ran into her. ?Sukriti kahin jaa rahi hai tuu?? sensing her obvious rush he?d asked. ?Nahin bhaiyya? woh bas eik friend sey milney jaana tha mujhey , late ho raha hai?.main chalun??? she had tried conning him but he was too shrewd to dismiss her nervous reaction to his question affirming and denying her action at the same time. Hmmm he had thought something was definitely wrong?he could sense it . ?Tera mobile? he had said handing over the object to her, she had been surprised by his possession of it and felt relieved as she clutched it tightly in her palm. The doctor had called her on the landline having tried getting back to her innumerable times after his fateful monologue with Milind he?d assumed there had been some malfunction and called again. She?d been frightened on the thought of having misplaced so valuable an asset as her mobile, she had searched high and low but had not been able to retrieve it. And there it was in her brother?s hand as luck would have it he was returning it, she wondered if he?d learnt of any of her secrets till yet.

As she stepped forward he suddenly remembered. ?Sukriti tuu ney company account sey paisey nikalwaye they ?.?She froze .. ?Konsey paisey bhaiyya ?? she had asked hesitantly well aware of the withdrawal he was talking about . ?Wohi paisey jo Mr Sharma terey liye bank sey laaye they? . ?Haan bhaiyya woh paisey?? she had tried sounding confident and mustering up courage faced him ?Woh to merey paas hain?? her hands had now started perspiring ?she was scared stiff?. ?Acha huey terey paas hain mujhey kal unki zarurat hai?.kal eik client ko payment kerni hai tuu wapas aa ker mujhey woh paisey dey dena.? He had said greatly relieved , thinking that his planning would not be a big waste afterall. ?Bhaiyya main kal subeh hi aapko who paisey dey dungi? she had promised him her voice hollow. As if she did not have enough problems, lamenting her fate she had sprinted down the stairs in haste.

His eyes had followed her till the exit ?studying her carefully , he knew her destination was not a friend?s company rather a particular doctor in a certain hospital. What surprised him was that she had not thought it feasible to share her problems with him. He knew she resented him because he had rejected Saket?s proposal for her. Under the given circumstances it was the only right thing to do , or so he thought. He?d given Niharika a piece of his mind?telling her exactly how he felt about the relation she had proposed?a god damned conspiracy to rob him off his wealth, his sister?s happiness and his hard earned reputation in one go. In return she?d called him a good for nothing miser who could not be of any use to her. A?chawl wala?, someone she?d not glance twice at. It was the money she was interested in not Sukriti. He had tried explaining this to Sukriti but she would not listen to him, having been passionately involved with Saket for some time now , distancing herself from him in the process. Had she changed to such an extent ?he wondered. How could he make her realize he was her brother and could not see her throw her life away , sadly he had no idea . His attempt to get her engaged to Amay having failed he?d lost all heart to even try reasoning with her now.

? Chalein?? she had asked appearing from behind?having overheard the conversation between the two she was only too happy to get his thoughts off her sister in law. ?Haan..? he had responded slowly his thoughts still focused on his sister. She had no idea of what Sukriti had in mind or was planning to do , yet somehow she could sense an inexplicable danger?.she had a sinking feeling in her stomach which she tried to shrug off walking with him outside in the cool evening .

The hospital was a five-storey modern glass structure. The reception was decorated in blue and white , a petite receptionist sat behind a glass desk.On hearing the doctor?s name and checking out the time due for the appointment she had directed them to an elevator to the rear of the lobby . ?Second floor , pehla cabin.? she had said. After a thorough check up the doctor had assessed Baba?s condition as one of steady progress and had given him a clean bill of health. He was happy to note that Prachi?s love and care had healed his father considerably, he was so indebted to her and wondered how he could ever repay her for this act alone. Catching his eye she had smiled warmly ?.and he had stolen away his gaze.

They had trooped down to the parking lot when she suddenly remembered that she?d forgotten the prescription jotted down by the doctor in his cabin. ? Milind main abhi aayi..? she said retreating her steps. ? Lekin bahu kiya hua?? Mishraji spoke up before she could leave. ?Baba aapki dawaiyon ki prescription to main upper hii bhuul aayi? she replied lamenting her forgetfulness. ? Arrey koi baat nahin Milind ley aayega tum gari main betho .? saying so he had looked at Milind who obediently turned towards the enterance.

He had wondered how he?d have a word with the good doctor about the ailing woman he?d called Sukriti for. Now having been given the opportunity he decided to do so without a moment?s delay. He pushed through the oak door, the seat behind the desk was empty, looked like the doctor was on his rounds.Plucking the prescription from under the marble paperweight he resolved to find him, meandering through the crowded hallways he atlast spotted him in a private room rapidly discussing a patient?s lab tests. A couple more minutes and the doctor sauntered out of the room in the opposite direction, he had moved forward to call out to him, yet in that instant he heard a familiar voice.

?Ab main chalti huun Sukriti Milind bhi yahiin hain or agar unhain tumharey yahaan honey ka pata chal gaya to woh buhut naraaz hongey.? How could he not recognize this voice ?the voice that resounded in his heart ..it was Prachi . He was too shocked to move, fixated at the doorway . ?Bhabhi mujhey buhut darr lag raha hai agar bhaiyya ko in sab key baarey main pata chal gaya to ?..? Sukriti?s frightened voice floated . ?Darney sey kuch haasil nahiin hoga Sukriti tum himmat sey kaam lo or in ka khayaal rakhna. Milind ko main sanbhal lungi.?

?Lekin bhabhi meri wajah sey pehley hii aap or bhaiyya main itni duuriyaan aa gayi hain. Aap ney hamesha meri madad kii or bhaiyya ney aapko ghalat samjha? she was crying now ?. ?Jo paisey mainey Rohan key liye nikalwaye unka ilzaam bhi bhaiyya ney aap per lagaya?Saket key saath bhaag ker shaadi kerney key liye bhi Ayesha ney mujhey majboor kiya lekin bhaiyya ney usey bhi aapki ghalati samjha??

Outside the room Milind?s world had started crumbling before him?.. ?Or agar bhaiyya ko yeh raaz pata chal gaya keh mera or Alaap ka eik bacha hai to kiya hoga bhabhi?.? He could hear her sobbing hysterically?. Sukriti or Alaap ka bacha ?.he stretched out his hand to support himself against the wall not being able to stand on his own now. He breathed heavily?.Prachi had known all along ?.she hadn?t told him?itna bara dhokha he stood there amazed at what he had just learnt not believing his ears. ?Kuch nahin hoga Sukriti tum ney mujh sey yeh baat raaz rakhney key liye kahii thi or main ney apna vaada nibhaya hai or aagey bhi nibhaungi , sahi waqt aaney per hum Baba or Milind ko sachai bata dengey lekin tab tak tum hosla rakho.? Having consoled her she had walked out in the deserted hallway , increasing her speed to reach the car before he did. She?d been waiting for Milind when Sukriti had called her upstairs thoroughly flustered with the woman?s failing health and she had heeded to her plea . Little did she know that seated calmly on the driving seat, staring ahead into nothingness, her husband had heard it all.

Standing at the shore leaning on his car he stared out at the immense black sea seeing nothing. The dull grey sky had suddenly changed to a jet black with enormous clouds blotting the last rays of sunshine. It had started slowly at first but increasing with every passing second , the pain and the rain. He stood there beneath the open sky as rain beat down hard and fast the raindrops stung his face like fierce little balls of lead. The thunder rolled in the sky above a deafening noise that threatened to split the world in two.

Somehow he had lost all sense of time, touch or understanding. He stood there unmoved his mind churning with thoughts?.thoughts that were too painful ?thoughts that he felt were drawing the life out of him.He was shell shocked and had not wanted to listen or see to anything . Dropping them off at the doorstep he had floored the accelerator ,gunning the engine in an attempt to leave it all behind him. Alas it had travelled with him all these miles on this deserted beach?the truth, the haunting pain, the innumerable questions and most of all the betrayal. His sister had discarded him like dirty dish water from her life. He hardly meant anything to her else she?d never have kept such a secret from him.But more than Sukriti his mind could not accept the fact that Prachi had known it all and still she had kept mum on the issue. What would she care about Sukriti , she was his sister not Prachi?s?.but hadn?t she supported Sukriti when he had opposed her marriage to Saket. If she cared about Sukriti why keep the truth from him? Could he not help his own sister.

A bolt of lightning lit the sky ?.not being able to hold it in anymore he let his tears flow freely not making any difference on his wet face. He slammed his fist in the wet sand falling down on his knees? "Kyun kiya tuu ney aisa Prachi..Kyun !!!!"he screamed in agony?.."Kyon kiya ?.Kyun "?he wept insanely his body shuddering with the unbearable hurt that mounted deep within him?"Kitna vishvaas kiya tha mainey terey pey ?.arey mujhey laga saari duniya ghalat ho sakti hai lekin tuu nahin"?.he wailed uncontrollably ?."sochta tha main kitna ghatia huun jo tujhey har baar ghalat samajhtaa huun ?.lekin tuu ney ?.tuu ney mujhey kuch nahin bataya ..arey iss laiq bhi nahin samjha keh main apni behen ka dard baant sakun"?..He was crying now hunched against his car tears streamed down his face as the rain grew thicker?..Main tujhey kabhi maaf nahin karunga Prachi ?he had vowed.

Part 11

The brakes squealed as his car screeched at a stop infront of his towering office . He was running a high temperature, his clothes looked as if he?d just been back from a scavenger hunt. Throwing the car keys to the valet he?d sprinted up the stairs to his office not wanting to face his employees crammed in the elevator. He had noticed some of them exchange confused glances at his bedraggled appearance?.not that he cared?..the world could?ve ended just then and it wouldn?t have mattered the least to him. His had ended the night before, on reaching his cabin he?d pulled out a fresh change of clothes , congratulating himself on having the sense of keeping one for sudden business trips. He had not returned home the entire night?sitting there on the beach watching the waves crash on the rocks to certain doom had filled him with the same devastation as the ill fated waves. He?d thought long and hard and had finally made a decision?a decision he hoped would cease the pain?..though somewhere deep down in his heart he knew the pain had just begun.

?Mr Kapoor main Milind Mishra bol raha huun kiya aaj aap free hain?? he?d spoken in his cell while buttoning up his shirt? ?Hmm haan lunch per theek raheyga?woh property key papers key ilawa bhi kuch papers banwaney they mujhey?.haan divorce papers? Jitna kaha jjaye utna hi kiya kero?.naam?..? he paused?.. ? Milind Mishra?..wife ka naam?.Prachi?..Prachi Mishra?..jitni jaldi ho sakey who papers mujhey chahiyen, ho sakey to lunch time tak.? Turning to glance back at his reflection in the washroom mirror he found a defeated and lost man staring back at him, enraged at his helplessness he clicked the cell shut.

She paced impatiently in the room ?..this was just too much she?d been trying to get some time off from Neev but he had just got glued to her. He?d been following her around like a puppy trying to make her happy , doing everything she wished. She knew Neev could not suddenly have a change of heart?.but then he did love Prachi. The question was did he love her so much to turn as bad as herself. She gazed at his sleeping form on the bed, they had come to Pune to attend a meeting , rather she had planned she would but Neev had followed her willingly. Not once had he taunted her or acted tardy to anything she?d asked him to do. On the contrary he had been running around according to her whim and wish and this was just not acceptable to her?.frustrated she shook him violently? ?Neev tuuney uthna bhi hai keh nahin aaj ki taareekh main?? she had asked acidly?

?Soney do na Ayesha ?kal raat kitni der tak main tumhari taangein dabata raha ab zara sukoon sey soney do mujhey..? he had replied groggily?.."Tereyko apni neend ki pari hai or wahaan dono Prachi or Milind akeley hain?.yahaan so ker khoney ki bajaye waapis Mumbai chalney kii tayyari ker ..?

?Oh Ayesha main to bhuul hi gaya tha keh hum Prachi or Milind ko alag kerney key mission per hain..? he had woken up startled? ?Main abhi tayyar ho jaata huun.Mumbai ki flight ko to eik ghanta hai abhi? .

Tuu bhuul sakta hai teri Prachi ko lekin main main apney Milind ko nahin?eik pal key liye bhi nahin she had thought stuffing her clothes in her bag?.she had to get back home? fast.

Milind forced himself not to think of the nauseating pain that had gripped his entire form?he was chilly and feverish ?his head swum as he tried concentrating on the project file infront of him, he rubbed his eyes to have a clearer vision of the printed text infront of him .The fone on his table rang out shrilly?. ?Sir aapkey ghar sey Prachi ma?am ka fone hai connect ker duun?? his secretary had asked ?..

?Nahin ?.or ab mujhey disturb kerney ki zarurat nahin?.kisi ka bhi fone ho keh dena main meeting main busy huun??he had answered angrily, as he placed the phone back his cell fone rang out?.Prachi?s name flashed on the screen ?he cancelled it ?.. checking the total number of missed calls he was surprised to see that all had been from Prachi?s cell?..21 missed calls and 15 unread messages.

Is sey bari shaani nahin hogi duniya main he had thought fuming inwardly. After all that she had done to him she expected him to buy her fake concern for him, well enough was enough . He?d borne her just for his father but he was not prepared to be played with by her. He was Milind Mishra , the Milind who had not stood anyone?s crap be it Inder Shah or Alaap or anyone else. If he could face the world alone, build an empire through sheer genius then why could he not give Prachi a taste of her own medicine. He?d married her for the sole purpose of revenge but that too did not matter to him anymore. All that mattered was that he did not mean the least to his sister ?not that he did not hold Sukriti responsible for keeping such a secret from him , she would havta give him an explanation, she was no less a culprit than Prachi. If Prachi had kept silent on the issue she had been the one to have made it in the first place.

Of the mess she had created he had no idea how he?d clean it up. It was bad enough that she had run away with Saket from her engagement creating problems for him and now an illegitimate child. How in the world would any decent guy accept her with it?how would Baba take this shock?how would he ever face the world if the truth came out.In the end it all simmered down to the fact that if Prachi knew this she could?ve told him about it ?they could?ve found a way to handle the situation. But there was no they it had just been him alone all along. What a fool he had been to think that Prachi could ever love him or care enough to confide in him. He was just an outsider , someone she?d married to save her sinking assets and family title. He could not decide who to be angry at more, his sister whom he?d brought up ?who was practically his shadow or Prachi?.someone who he had loved more than his ownself, someone who he thought would never be the cause of his humiliation yet all his faith in her had been swept away like the footprints on a wet beach.

He was dangerously wound up now tense and brittle as he walked up to the windows his eyes blazing ?..he looked down at the scene below ?people , cars, buses . Everything was in place?.but was the world where it had been yesterday. It seemed amazing to him how a sudden turn of events changed the entire track of life.Closing his tired eyes he leaned against the cold wall, letting the coolness sting his burning body. Till yesterday he had thoughts of Prachi as a saviour today she appeared as a backstabbing hypocrite who lived solely for her ownself. But he would not forgive her for taking it all away from him in one go, he may have loved her yet he could not bear her presence now , the mere thought of her ignited a fire in his soul. The wounds she had inflicted to his heart were fatal??divorce was the only option now. She could live with her family and he would shift back to Turkey with Sukriti and Baba. Having made up his mind he breathed hard ?would he be able to let her go?.his eyes flicked open with this thought.

Once back at home Ayesha was only too happy to hear that Milind had not returned home the previous night. If not at home then not with Prachi such was the mental calculation she had made, smiling she hummed a merry tune while she flipped through a latest showbiz mag. Neev could do nothing about her pathetic behaviour, how he loathed her?he had envisioned many ways of getting the truth out of her but she had proved a hard nut to crack. Unable to do anything he chose to remain silent till he found any clue.

?Prachi beta Milind nazar nahin aaya aaj subeh sey, upper kamrey main hai kiya?? Mishraji had asked an anxious Prachi as she loitered aimlessly near the doorway.

?Nahin to Baba who to subeh office jaldi chaley gaye they aaj unki meeting thi is liye?? she had smiled trying to hide her torment from him. Sitting on the couch Neev had read her face carefully, he knew her far too well to dismiss her lame excuse as a genuine reason. Why had Milind not returned home?.he had thought perplexed ,was he feeling guilty about his confrontation with Neev. That did not make sense , snapping out of his reverie he was surprised at how silently Ayesha had slunk out of the hall.

Ab yeh kahaan chali gayi..zarur koi nayi khichdi paka rahi hogi?he thought unhappily trudging out to find her. Milind?s absence had kept Prachi awake the entire night, she had listened to the thunder frightened about Milind?s safety , glancing out of the rain spattered window every so often. He had not called her neither had he received any of hers. He?d reached the office but had still not contacted her which was very unlikely of him. If not her he would?ve at least called Sukriti up but that too had not happened. Sukriti had been upset about the money Milind had asked her to hand him..she had misplaced the money after her encounter with Rohan and had not bothered to investigate of it?s whereabouts fearing that it would lead to further troubles. She had promised Sukriti to lend her the amount from her personal account thus putting her mind at ease, but her?s had yet to be eased. Finally she made up her mind to meet Milind at the office surely he could not make any excuse then, she?d take him his favourite lunch maybe that would help . Smiling she helped her mother prepare the food, Milind would certainly be surprised to see her there.

Part 12

He was seated in the dark, alone , behind the desk.Hearing a slight knock at the door he sat up straight. ? Sir main papers ley aaya huun..? Mr Kapoor had said placing himself in the leathered chair opposite his across the desk.Somehow it had been easier to sit in the dark with his thoughts, now the impossible seemed inevitable. ? Acha? ?he had replied taking the file from him and reading it carefully. ?Or woh dusrey waaley? he had asked ?Ji woh bhi hain woh to acha hua keh mera eik dost nikal aaya wahin warna to itni jaldi papers banna mushkil tha.? Smiling he had placed the black file on the glass top ? ?Extra payment mil jayegi aapko iski? he had assured the sly lawyer. Such rats! He had thought in disgust, all that meant to them was money?.going through the papers he approved them and thanking him had asked him to collect them the next day. Just as Mr Kapoor was leaving the office he met Prachi at the doorway .. ?Arey Bhabhi ji namastey?? he had greeted her. Milind had looked up to meet her gaze, a look that had stopped Prachi?s heart beat . There was so much in that one look she was disturbed instantly. A look that conveyed, hurt, betrayal, revenge and a deep rooted hatred ?she felt as if he was not the same man she had seen the previous evening, as if a different Milind sat behind that desk. Had she missed something?

?Kyun aayi hai tuu yahaan ?? he had asked slowly advancing towards her as a hunter towards it?s victim, his charcoal eyes fixated on her. She was caught offgaurd by his sudden move, backing slowly she felt herself pinned against the thick oak door. ?Woh aap ghar nahin aaye they kal raat to Baba pareshaan ho gaye they?.mainey socha main aap sey yahin baat ker luun or saath main lunch bhi ker leingey.? She clarified , her heart racing at his sudden closeness to her, something had gone terribly wrong but what ?

?Khana laayi hai tuu merey liye?.? He had said quietly taking the bag containing the food from her hand and throwing it in the far corner of the room. ?Sirf khana laayi hai..? he smiled ?thora zeher bhi mila deti ?.mujhey thori na malum hota.? His words felt like acid drenching her with their sting. She looked at him in shock her eyes moist now. He was inches away from her now pressing himself closer to her she could feel his breath hot on her skin, his face close to her own.

?Tereyko kiya laga mujhey kabhi pata nahin chaleyga Sukriti key baarey main?? he had asked his voice indicating his rising anger , she stared at him in horror.. ?Aapko?yeh ?yeh kaisey malum..? she stammered. The question only spurred his rage and he started laughing?.laughing so hard he had tears in his eyes?..She had never seen him like this, swinging between sanity and insanity? How did he know about Sukriti..and what did he know.

?Milind? she pleaded ? ?Sanbhaliye apney aap ko? she had hurried forward to help him up as he lurched dangerously towards his glass topped desk. ?Haath mat lagana mujhey..? he screamed raising his hand . ?Yeh haq tuu kho chuki hai ? he had said emphasizing the words. She felt as if someone had punched her hard in the stomach. ?Aap mujhey bataeingey bhi keh kiya baat hai? Sukriti key baarey main aap kiya jaantey hain? Who paisey to usney lauta diye hain aapko aaj aapkey account main transfer ho jayeingey? she had tried calming him.

?Arey samajh kiya rakha hai tum logon ney mujhey?.pagal huun main?ya kuch dikhai nahin deta mujhey?teri or sukriti ki saari baatein sun lii theen mainey hospital main? he had grabbed her arms tightly and shook them forcefully. ?Kiya laga tereyko meri behen key baarey main itni bari baat chupayegi or mujhey pata nahin chaleyga?arey jee kerta hai aag laga duun iss duniya ko or is main rehney waaley tum jaisey logon ko.Lekin yeh sab meri ghalati hai main ney terey sey shaadi ki meri zindagi kii sab sey bari ghalati thi woh. Saat janmon ka to kiya tuu ney to issi janam main hii is rishtey per sey mera vishwaas khatam ker diya.? he was holding her responsible for the entire ordeal.

?Lekin mainey to sirf Sukriti ki madad..? she tried explaining to him , hoping to make him understand her motive. ?Madad ker rahi thii tuu uski?madad hii kerna thii to mujhey kyun nahin bataya? Kyun chupaya mujh sey bata??kabhi yeh nahin socha keh jab Milind ko pata chaleyga to kiya kareyga? he had let go of her now but his eyes still bore in her. He laughed softly ? "Main bhi na arey kis sey puuch raha huun yeh sab? Tuuney kabhi humarey rishtey ko samjha hota to aaj yeh waqt nahin aata?.terey liye yeh shaadi sirf eik dikhawa hai ?.?

Just then the door flew open.."Bhaiyya !!!? Sukriti has said standing breatless in the doorway. She had called Milind up to inquire about the money transfer but he had accidently forgotten to switch off his mobile, when she had heard Milind storm at Prachi she had decided that enough was enough. She was the one responsible for this entire situation and would not let Prachi bear the brunt of her mistakes.Being in a nearby mall she had driven quickly to the office.

?Bhaiyya , bhabhi ka iss main koi qasur nahin hai??she had said stepping inside. ?Unhon ney to sirf mera raaz chupaya , meri madad kii unhain isski saza mat dijiye please.? ?Nahin Sukriti qasur na tera hai na Prachi ka?qasur to sirf mera hai. Mera jis ney tereyko itna pyaar kiya. Terey pey itna vishwaas kiya..? he was crying now. ?Terey liye main ney kiya nahin kiya Sukriti ?Baba key khilaaf gaya?arey duniya key khilaaf chala gaya keh meri behen ghalat nahin?lekin tuuney aaj mujhey kahin munh dikhaney laiq nahin chora? . ?Bhaiiya mujhey maaf ker dijiye?she had pleaded .He had turned away from her ,

?Maafi ghalati key liye dii jaati hai Sukriti gunah key liye nahin , main shayad Prachi ko maaf bhi ker duun lekin tuuney aaj jo mujhey dard diya hai Sukriti uskey liye main tereyko kabhi maaf nahin kerunga??kabhi nahin.?not being able to take it anymore he had sauntered out of the office leaving both women stare after him in dismay.

Neev had finally found Ayesha talking over the phone with someone. ? Jaisa mainey kaha hai waisa hii kiya haina ?.aaj shaam tak kaam ho jaana chahiye, uski gaari key breaks fail ker diye tuuney?.good..haan terey paisey terey paas puhunch jayeingey.? the person on the other side had positively assured her causing her smile to spread to her ears. ?Ab aayega maza?main bhi dekhti huun Prachi keh tuu Milind ko mujh sey kaisey cheenti hai. Na tuu raheygi, na hii Milind terey paas raheyga!!!?

Neev had a sick feeling in his stomach this did not sound good. ?Arey Ayesha tum yahaan ho mainey tumhain kahaan kahaan nahin dhunda??he had smiled . ?Koi naya plan bana rahi ho?? he had probed.. ? Neev tuu sirf aam kha pair mat gin aaj shaam ko hum dono eik saath celebrate kareingey?? she had smiled patting his cheek.Celebration?kuch to garbar hai..kiya keh rahi thi yeh break fail ..gari?lekin kis ki.? Just then her words resounded in his ears Main bhi dekhti huun Prachi keh tuu Milind ko mujh sey kaisey cheenti hai. Na tuu raheygi, na hii Milind terey paas raheyga. Oh no that meant it was Prachi?s car she was having tampered?..Kiya karun main he had thought frantically. If he left and warned Prachi he was bound to expose himself and if he did not Prachi would be in serious trouble?.there was no time to lose. He had a sudden urge to strangle Ayesha with his bare hands , cursing her under his breath he dialled Milind?s number?.he was the only one who could help him now.

?Hello,? Milind?s voice rang in his cell. ?Hello Milind main Neev bol raha huun..dekho phone mat kaatna please.? ?Bol kiya bolna hai? he had replied warily.. ? Milind Prachi ki jaan ko khatra hai dekho uski gaari key breaks fail ho gaye hain ?.tum usey uski gari main nahin bethney dena ..please Milind.?

?Kiya bakwaas ker raha hai tuu Neev?merey saath agar koi shaaney baazi kii na to..? he was angry now. ? Milind please waqt buhut kam hai bacha lo Prachi ko.? Something in Neev?s voice confirmed his fears. ?Prachi!!? he had whispered Neev could not lie about such a grave matter?..nothing could happen to her ,he would save her. He had started running now towards the parking lot. Desperation gripped his insides as he dialled her number.. Phone utha Prachi ?.he had thought but the bell had rung on ?no answer. Scanning the lot he was unable to locate her or her car, running over to the valet he asked ?Prachi gayi kiya?? .

?Kon Sir..Madam ya receptionist?? he had asked.

?Arey meri biwi ?gayi kiya? Uski car nahin dikh rahi..? his throat felt dry ,each breath a struggle.?Ji Sir Prachi Ma?am to abhi abhi chali gayeen.? ?Abhi abhi,? he echoed matlab duur nahin gayi hogi he thought running towards his own car. The wind whipped Milind?s hair, the engine roared as he gunned it mercilessly shifting gears, he had to find her. Speeding on the main road he atlast spotted her car amongst the dozen others racing past him. His anguish knew no bounds agar usey kuch ho gaya to?..his fingers were white as he clutched the wheel tightly. No he would not let anything happen to her?..not as long as he himself breathed.

The tires of the blue Corolla spun on the tarmac . With a hard burst the car jumped forward losing all control and skidding sideways on a bumpy path off road. The car bounded forward on the bumpy ground. Shooting into a tree trunk , it bounced off, jerking Prachi against the door. Hit another tree , rocketed and landing on a big boulder over turned .From his car behind Milind had witnessed the whole scenario open mouthed, he could not believe it was Prachi?s car that was overturned . Slamming the brakes of his own car he hurriedly exited it and ran over to the up turned vehicle. ?PRACHI!!!? he yelled. He could see a bloodied arm lying lifeless outside a smashed window. Quickly he sprinted off to the place, petrol had now started leaking from the burst gas tank. He had to move quick it was only a matter of seconds before the car would be blown up. ?Prachi..? he choked now, she lay unmoving ,her form a bloody mess. He grabbed the door handle and tugged at the door , it wouldn?t budge. Losing his calm he smashed the remainder of the shattered window pane of the opposite side with his shoes and hauled Prachi out . Just then he heard a moaning sound. Laying her down he ran to the other side to help out the miserable driver who seemed to be wedged between the wheel and the roof. Stomping madly at the car door he managed to pry it open pulling the driver out. ?Ram Singh haath do ,? he screamed in panic. Practically pulling him out of the car he slid his arm around his waist supporting him. He could feel the intense heat emitting from the car, Prachi ko kuch na ho ?.he had kept praying. Ram Singh having been in a position to walk he ordered him to be seated in his car. Swiftly returning back to Prachi?s side he had swept her in his arms and had run like mad. ?Ram Singh bhago jaldi!!!!? he yelled , sensing the immediate danger Ram Singh had broken into full trot and only seconds later they heard the most deafening crash , the car had been blown to shreds, turning back he saw it?s charred skeleton a flaming piece of scrap.

The ride to the hospital was one he would never forget, never before had he broken signals, swerved without warning in opposite directions and sped at such unimaginable speed. He just had to save her, every now and then he would glance at her making sure she was breathing, but he could see the blood stains on her jade green saree increase in diameter. She was bleeding badly , finally the familiar shape of the hospital loomed in view. Breathing hard he had picked Prachi up again dashing in the hospital, pushing through crowded hallways he reached the emergency unit. ?Doctor please issey treatment ki zarurat hai? he had caught a doctor by the arm leading him to the stretcher he had placed Prachi on. ?Dekhiye Mr meri duty off ho chuki hai aap onduty doctor sey baat kijiye.? He had shrugged his shoulder . ? Doctor yeh isski zindagi ka sawaal hai itna major accident hua hai iska agar foran treatment nahin hua to issey kuch bhi?? he couldn?t say anything further. ?Please doctor please issey dekh lijiye? he was now begging the doctor clasping his hands in front of him in sheer desperation. ?Lekin yeh to police case hai..pehley formalities.? ?Jo bhi formalities hongi main puri ker dunga doctor aap treatment to shuru kijiye .? Taking one last look at his crest fallen face the doctor assented on treating her. ?Nurse inhain ander ley jao quick, check her blood group and be fast.? He had ordered the nurse who had wheeled Prachi in to an operating unit. Another one came up to Milind with a form , ?Patient ka naam kiya hai?? she had questioned him.. ?Prachi?? ?Prachi Kiya? Surname bataiye ..? ?Prachi Mishra? he had blurted out instantly. ?Pati ka naam??she had probed again. ?Milind Mishra? he had stated ? In key kisi relative ka naam ya pata??. ?Main huun na yahaan iska relative ?.patni hai who meri.? he had replied heatedly. After filling the form and paying up for the required medical help he had seen to the driver , getting his wounds bandaged he had sent him home.

He had paced the entire length of the corridor for the hundredth time now. What the hell was that doctor upto his nerves felt as if they would explode. He himself was a bloody mess, the mangled metal of the car had left him badly bruised and in cuts in his attempt to save Prachi and the driver. He did not feel the pain that pulsated in his left leg a big gash now showed visibly beneath his torn trousers or rather he had chosen not to, all his thoughts were focused on Prachi?s well being at the moment. He had seen a nurse run back and forth from the lab to the operating room countless times and each time she had avoided answering his one question ?Kaisi hai woh??.After what seemed like eons the door opened and the exhausted doctor walked out. ?Doctor ab kaisi hai woh?? he had enquired without a moment?s delay. ?Main treatment ker chukka huun lekin khoon kaafi beh chukka hai is liye abhi bhi khatra tala nahin . Agar agley eik ghantey main hosh nahin aaya to?? his voice trailed off. ?To kiya doctor?? he had asked his voice betraying his worry. ?To ho sakta hai keh who recover na ker payein, aap dua karein mujhey yaqeen hai unhain jaldi hosh aa jayega.? The doctor had patted his shoulder sympathetically and walked away. Nahin aisa nahin ho sakta who mujhey chor ker kahin nahin jaa sakti his mind had refused to acknowledge it even as a possibility. Silently he walked in , he saw her lying on the hospital bed her face as white as a sheet. She looked awful it seemed as if life had been drawn out of her, surrounded by machines monitoring her pulse rate and blood pressure. A drip steadily supplied her a pain killer while the other provided blood to her veins.

A sudden draining feeling rushed through him sucking all his energy away. It was all because of him, she was lying here in this state because of him. The day?s event played back in his mind. He repented every word he had uttered that day, how could he have been so inhuman to her? Here she had tried helping Sukriti , trying to keep his sister?s act a secret, his family?s name clean and he had blamed her for ruining his family?not informing him. There was an awful emptiness inside him ,how could he be so blinded by rage so as not to sort out the facts. Feeling lifeless he sat heavily on the stool near her bed. How would he live without her he wondered because try as he might he could not lie to himself that he loved her. Held her precious more than anything else. Everything related to her had a direct affect on him. A tear rolled down his cheek , he hated himself . Taking her hand in his own he wept silent tears of repentance. ?Prachi ..? he whispered placing the back of his hand against her damp cheek . ?Prachi please mujhey maaf ker dey?.main ghalat tha?.Prachi please aankhain khol Prachi ?please!?. Tears trickled down his face dropping on her pale hand as he held it to his cheek, suddenly he felt a slight movement . He opened his eyes , he could see her eyelids flutter momentarily?.. ?Prachi..? he called out rubbing her palm ?Prachi aankhain khol Prachi? his heart beat alive as he saw her face wince with pain. Slowly she opened her heavy eyelids to meet his concerned eyes. ?Milind..? she managed to call him , he felt as if he had been gifted a new life.?Ssshhh?Prachi? he shushed her placing his finger on her parched lips. ?Kuch bol nahin Prachi , tuu theek hai? he smiled through his tears. ?Us doctor ney to mujhey dara hii diya tha..? he confessed smoothing her hair ?Tuu aaram ker main doctor ko bula ker laata huun.? ?Milind kiya aap ab bhi mujh sey naraaz hain ?? she had asked fearfully. Her voice weak , he looked at her in awe , here she was on the brink of death yet she worried if he had forgiven her or not. He bent down and kissed her forehead ?Nahin? he said softly as their eyes locked he could see relief sweep through hers.

She lay there too tired to move, remembering the afternoon?s events vividly. She remembered Ram Singh?s panic as he frantically pumped the brake, stomping hard on it . The car had not stopped, hadn?t even slowed, it had shot forward throwing her against the door . She saw red as the window pane smashed in her sides. She remembered struggling to breathe, trying to pull herself free and calling out Milind?s name in despair. She remembered hands pulling her out of the car, strong arms lifting her and a vague impression of her husband screaming her name. She smiled he could storm and rave at her, act like he hated her but she knew deep down he loved her. She could still feel the excrutiating pain yet her heart was at peace.

The week had flown by in a blink of an eye. Premlata, Dadi, Sukriti,Suyesha ,Mamji, Naintara and even Alaap had frequently paid her visits while she lay bed ridden at the hospital. Premlata had insisted on staying with her at the hospital keeping Milind?s comfort in mind but he had flatly refused, not allowing anyone to stay overnight. He himself had seemed to become her shadow. Be it anything he was there by her side, watching her, helping her, consoling her. She had known her husband to be a compassionate person but was still over whelmed at his actions. She knew he repented that day, whatever he had said and done to her but failed to say anything to apologize too burdened by guilt and shame. ?Mrs Mishra how are you feeling today?? she was brought back to the reality instantly. ?Much better doctor? she had replied smiling.Milind quietly walked in the room placing the fresh flowers beside her bed.He knew she loved flowers and so had brought her some to freshen up her senses. The doctor carefully studied her lab reports and then beamed at them. ?Lagta hai aapkey pati ki mehnat or seva rang laayi hai you?r much better now. I think eik do din main aapko discharge ker deingey. Buhut pyaar kertey hain who aapsey shayad hii eik pal ho jab who aap key paas na hon.? They both had exchanged glances at that comment and Prachi had smiled at him. Placing back her charge sheet the doctor had proceeded to check her temperature and blood pressure after which he had left them to themselves. ?Ab kaisi hai tuu ??he had asked seating himself by her side. ?Theek huun or aap?? she had asked softly. ? Mujhey kiya hoga main to bilkul theek huun.? He had stared at her confused by the query. ?Nahin aap theek nahin hain kal aap ney bandage change nahin kerwayii thi?kyun?? she was now demanding an explanation. His eyebrows shot up as he looked at her surprisingly mumbling an explanation.. ?Woh?woh?? he stuttered. ?Woh . woh kiya , saaf saaf kahiye merey liye itna pareshaan rehtey hain keh khud ki parwah hii nahin.? She had stated in a hurt tone. He was speechless, after all that she had gone through because of him she still cared for him. Feeling too disgusted with himself he stood up to leave when he heard her call.. ?Suniye, agar aap yeh samajhtey hain keh main aapkey us din key bartaav sey naraaz huun to aisi baat nahin hai? she was explaining to him?what was she a saint? He turned around and stared at her hard ?Kyun nahin hai tuu naraaz arey hona chahiye na naraaz?ghussa ker mujh pey, bol keh main bura huun Prachi?.bol keh main terey laiq nahin, mainey tujhey kiya kiya nahin bola or tuu sirf meri khushion key baarey main sochti rahi merey parivaar ki izzat bachaney key baarey main sochti rahi?? he had completely broken down now. ?Tuu kyun itni achi hai Prachi keh yeh shabd achai bhi terey saamney chota lagney lagta hai?? he had tried walking away again when he felt her soft touch on his hand. ?Agar aap meri parwa ker saktey hain to kiya main nahin?? her voice had reached his ears. Turning back to face her he saw her looking at him, tears glittering in her hazel eyes. Her forthrightness had somehow cleared away some of his anguish. Placing his heavy hand on hers he sat back facing her, wiping away her tears with his finger he planted a kiss on her forehead. ?Thanks..mujhey maaf kerney key liye.? And he had smiled , his first in the past two weeks.

Ayesha had come to know about her plan?s failure and was furious, Najaaney kab peecha choreygi yeh Milind ka she had thought writhing with rage. She had tried talking to Milind the past week but he was always unavailable ?being at the hospital . Somehow Ayesha had begun to have a perilous fear of losing Milind to Prachi. Her step sister whom she hated more than anything in this world. She was the reason her life had become an example of living hell. She had married Neev but had never found marital bliss in her relationship, mostly because she herself was so consumed by the revenge that she had wanted to wreak on Prachi. But all her planning had been put to test when Prachi tied the knot with Milind. The Milind that Ayesha loved and lived, she had thought that she could win him back easily but in the past few days she had sensed him slipping away from her as fine sand in a tightly pressed palm. The more she tried to keep him near her, to close her palm more the more the sand slipped between her fingers. She was frustrated now why did Milind have to be driving by her car when her car collapsed. Could Neev have leaked the information she had thought countless times. But she remembered him being with her the entire time at a conference that day, he had not gone away even for a split second still trying to act syrupy sweet to her. She knew there had been a glich but where exactly was what she could not pin down. Anyways there was always a next time. Lost in her thoughts she descended the spiral staircase to the main hall. There at the doorway she saw Milind helping Prachi in the house.

?Thehro beta? Premlata?s voice had echoed in distance ?Mujhey tum dono ki aarti utaarney do? and they had both assented smiling as the latter performed the aarti with fervour. ?Tum dono thak gaye hogey Milind tum issey kamrey main leykar jao main soup leykar aati huun.? Directing them to their room she had been off to the kitchen herself. Placing his strong arm around Prachi supporting her he waited patiently while she weakly stepped forward. ?Tuu upper tak..? he had asked worriedly, his voice filled with concern . ?Main theek huun Milind .? she had assured him only to stagger in the next instant. Shaking his head in disapproval Milind had swept her frail figure in his Herculean arms and had walked past a shocked Ayesha?they obviously hadn?t even noticed her their eyes fixed on each other a serenity etched on both faces.

Placing her on the bed he had made her comfortable arranging a stack of cushions around her . ?Tuu kuch kha ley phir dawai ka waqt ho jayega .? he had checked his wrist watch the umpteenth time. ?Aap kyun itna pareshaan hain Milind ..ab to main ghar bhi aa gayi huun ?phir? she could not understand his skeptic behaviour. It was true he held himself responsible for her accident but it was not his fault that the car?s brakes had failed, perplexed she had questioned him. Ramu Kaka entered just then sparing him from a much awaited reply ?Saab bitiya key liye soup.? he had informed handing him the bowl. He had then seated himself by her side ?Ab chal yeh pii ley ..? he had said dipping the spoon in the piping hot liquid, sensing it not fit for her to drink yet, he had slowly blown it to cool it down a bit before extending it to her lips. Watching her stare at him had rendered him conscious of his act.. ?Kiya hua?? he questioned her silent form. ? Kuch nahin? she had answered , her lips quivered as she blinked back tears . ?Kiya hua Prachi? Dard ho raha hai kiya? Main doctor ko bulaun ?? he had enquired his forehead creased with worry lines. ?Nahin Milind main theek huun .? she insisted causing him to calm down a bit ?Bas yeh soch rahi thi keh aap ko meri kitni fikr hai, agar yeh sab is accident ki wajah sey hua hai to kaash keh yeh accident pehley hi..? she could not complete her sentence as he had placed his hand over her lips. ?Nahin Prachi aisa sochna bhi mat. Tuu merey liye kiya hai yeh mainey ab jaana hai, us pal jab us doctor ney mujhey kaha agar tujhey hosh nahin aaya to ..to tuu?..tab mujhey laga meri zindagi hi khatam ho jayegi.? Composing himself he tucked back her silken strand behind her ear. ?Ab to yeh bhi thanda ho gaya jaldi pii ley iss sey pehley keh Maa aa jaye or dono ko daant parey? he laughed humorously as she sipped up the soup willingly.

That night after dinner he had thought of taking a walk in the lawn in a hope to clear his mind of the current track of events. Breathing a lungful of fresh air he closed his eyes to drift in the coolness of the night . Everything looked perfect today the still water of the pool, the low sounds of crickets hidden amongst the deep emerald foliage, the flush of lights emitting from the flood lights . He was tranced by the beauty of it all when he felt a heavy hand on his shoulder, he turned around to see Milind . ?Tum yahaan kiya ker rahey ho?? ?Terey se baat kerni thi? he had replied coolly advancing a few steps , his shoes scraping against the wooden planks of the bridge. ?Prachi ki gari key brakes fail ho gaye hain tereyko kaisey pata ?? he had asked straightaway. Neev had looked at him hard ?Tum sey matlab ..mujhey pata chala mainey bata diya bas.? ?Wohi to puch raha huun kaisey pata chala tujhey?? his voice now indicated a hardness , the pressure on Neev?s shoulder had increased slightly. ?Sunna chahtey ho tum sacchai?? he had smiled bitterly .. ?Mujhey yeh tumhari pyaari Ayesha ney bataya?bataya hii nahin balkeh woh to Prachi key marney per celebrate bhi kerney waali thi.? He was laughing now. ?Kiya bakwaas ker raha hai tuu? Milind had snapped forcefully ?Ayesha yeh kyun kareygi.? He could not believe this crap. ?Haan Ayesha kyun kareygi? Neev had rubbed in ?Shuker kero Milind keh us din mainey tumhain phone ker diya warna aaj tumhari Prachi swargwasi ho chuki hoti " shaking himself free of his iron grasp he had started to walk away when suddenly he turned around to add ?Or haan agar aagey bhi uski khairiyat chahtey ho to usey Ayesha sey duur rakhna , who to paagal ho chuki hai tumhain paaney ka junoon uski jaan to ley gaa hii lekin uskey saath kitni or jaanain jaayeingi iska andaaza to mujhey bhi nahin.? And he had strutted off to the house. ?Ayesha? his lips whispered did she really do this?.but there was no answer to the question only the gloom of the dark night lingered on.

Part14

Milind lay in his darkened bedroom remembering the past . There was a distinct reality about the way Neev had accused Ayesha of trying to harm Prachi and it disturbed him. He had known Ayesha since long and he knew her inside out. He knew she was rough and always ended up doing what she wanted. He knew she loved him but above all he knew that she hated Prachi because he had married her. He had never bothered to think about Ayesha ever since Prachi had filled the void in his life and heart. He had thought he loved Ayesha but all his paths led him to Prachi. No matter where he went, what he did or what he thought it always started and ended with Prachi. Over the last couple of months he had undergone an incredible change he thought he knew himself , his heart and his soul yet he had been proved wrong. It turned out Prachi had known him better than himself. She knew what troubled him, pleased him or irritated him so much so that she had gone to great lengths to comfort him, soothe him and to avert any possible harm or impending danger to him. He gazed back lovingly at her frail figure sleeping peacefully under the influence of drugs. Could he let her go now? Could he let Ayesha or anyone else harm her? No came an instant reply from within. He would not let anyone place a finger on her.He wondered whether she loved him, he himself had started doing so long back but had never found the courage to own it up to her.Someday he promised closing his eyes he would tell her how he felt?..someday.

Breakfast was the usual affair with the table buzzing with voices. It was the first time in a week that she was joining her family for the first meal of the day. Milind had not allowed her to stray out of their room without his permission or his company and she had willingly complied. The past week was one filled with surprises ,she had talked Milind in meeting with Saket and he had agreed on the condition that he would not be keeping him in any dark regarding Sukriti?s past.

?Mujhey bhi to pata chaley uski asshiqui ki inteha agar who Sukriti sey waqai pyaar kerta hai to usey iss bachey ko bhi apnana pareyga? he had said firmly not leaving any ground for argument. He was still not on talking terms with Sukriti but a meeting had been arranged by her between him and Saket and she hoped it would turn out to be one with a promising future, for both Sukriti and Rhitwik. ?Prachi nashta ker liya tuuney?? Milind?s voice had brought her back to the present. ?Milind mujhey bhuuk nahin hai? she had answered. ?Kyun?teri tabiyat to theek haina?? Milind had asked placing his hand on her forehead in an attempt to check her temperature. ?Main bilkul theek huun abhi aapkey office ka time ho gaya hai aapko der ho jayegi , main aapki cheezain laa deti huun.?she rose to her feet ?Mujhey der nahin ho rahi tuu bata tuu nashta kyun nahin ker rahi?? he had outrightly rejected her excuse gently pulling her back to her chair . ?Woh aaj karva chaut hai na ?.mera vrath hai?iss liye? she had finally confessed though she knew what was up next. ?Kyun rakha vrath ?? he had asked vehemently ?Apni tabiyat ki fikar hii nahin?.tujhey kuch ho gaya to? he was complaining now. ?Milind kuch nahin hoga issey tum chinta mat kero mainey doctor sey phone per puch liya tha, unhon ney kaha keh Prachi vrath rakh sakti hai.? Daadi had tried reassuring him. But he still seemed perplexed and had ordered her not to do any housework or indulge in any activity the entire day. His exasperation had left both Premlata and Daadi in splits, and both had hoped that the strong bond that had formed between them would remain forever.

Seated on the far left of the dining table Ayesha had witnessed this entire ordeal tight lipped, enraged at the pace on which Milind was being drawn towards Prachi. At this rate she had realized it wouldn?t be long before she would lose all command on him. No she could not let this happen, she had to put a stop to it?but how was a question that puzzled her. She knew Milind had started ignoring her and any pep talk on her part would not alter his decisions, she needed a soild plan. One that would remove Prachi from Milind?s life forever. Determined to find a solution she had driven to the office. She needed to sign a few important documents which had to be dispatched soon. A mutual contract between Shah Industries and Infinity Group regarding a sea front hotel project. The project was a multi million affair and the sooner it was put on the map the better it was for her business.Parking her car she hurried over to her cabin walking through the starkly modern reception lobby. Flicking through the files she atlast found the one reagarding the Project and proceeded to read the details, satisfied she inked her name on the dotted line now she just needed Milind?s signatures and all would be settled?atleast in business she had thought. Walking upto his cabin she had barged in regardless of any qualms on Milind?s part. Stepping inside she found him deep in conversation with Mr Kapoor his lawyer, they both had looked up stopping in mid conversation.

?Koi kaam hai Ayesha?? Milind had enquired visibly irritated. ?Yeh papers sign kerwaaney they aaj hi bhijwa dein to acha hai.? She had replied unmoved by his grimace. ?Sir phir main chalun " Mr Kapoor had asked . ?Nahin aap bethiye? Milind had negated his proposed action .?Papers?? he had stretched his hand to retrieve the file from her hands. Signing his name under hers he had handed it back to her. ?Haan to Mr Kapoor main chah raha tha keh aap eik baar unkey lawyer sey mil lain we will then think of a mutual agreement.? he had resumed with his conversation. ?Yes Sir I think this is possible main aaj hii un sey appointment fix ker leta huun?.?Good and give me an update soon?. Standing up to leave Mr Kapoor had turned around again in remembrance .?Sir kal court main divorce papers file kerney ki last date hai phir shayad Diwali key baad hi possible ho.? The words had left a varied impression on all present in the room.

?Mr Kapoor main iss baarey main aap sey baad main baat karunga.? Milind had answered sharply and Mr Kapoor having taken the hint exited the cabin. ?Oh to tuu uss Prachi ko divorce deney waala hai Milind.? She could not believe what she had just heard was true , a wide smile spreading on her face. ?Main kis key saath kiya kerta huun Ayesha is sey tera koi vaasta nahin, khaas ker Prachi sey to bilkul nahin?. ?Haan mera us sey koi vaasta nahin Milind lekin tujh sey hai? she was now thoroughly annoyed by his rigidity towards her. ?Ayesha please!? he had raised his hand in exasperation stopping her from advancing further . ?Main kuch sunna nahin chahta.? ?Eik waqt tha Milind keh tuu sirf meri awaz sunney key liye mujhey kayi baar phone kiya kerta tha or aaj uss Prachi key liye tujhey meri awaz bhi sunna pasand nahin.Aaj tuu bhalley hii meri baat na sun Milind lekin eik waqt aisa bhi aayega jab tujhey suuney key liye sirf main rahungi or koi nahin.? He could see her eyes ablaze , hatred flashing through them. ?Ayesha agar teri wajah sey Prachi ko kuch bhi hua to..? he was now threatening her. ?Uss Prachi ko to main teri zindagi sey nikaal ker hii rahungi Milind , aaj nahin to kal lekin yeh zarur hoga.? Saying so she had left his office in a huff slamming the door shut behing her. He had underestimated her hatred for Prachi, the magnitude of her animosity towards Prachi was now very much clear to him. Stomping away to her own office Ayesha had vowed that this karvachaut would be the first and last for Prachi.

Prachi had been waiting since long now, she knew Milind would not delay his arrival deliberately yet she felt faint and wished he would come soon. Walking back to the waistlength wall of the terrace she had peered down in an attempt to find him. The cool night breeze blew gently blowing her hair like wisps of silken thread. She had taken extra care to get prepared for this momentous occasion. She had worn the sari adorned by her on her wedding day, the crimson and the gold combination had blessed her an aurous glow. Her hands rang with the melody of the crimson bangles complete with the heavy kundan bracelets her father had lovingly gifted to her.An equisite kundan and ruby necklace adorned her neck with matching earrings to compliment. She studied the contents of the bronze platter in her hand, everything was there?everything but where was he? Slowly she ran her fingers on the beaded black mangulsutar worn by her, she had touched it lovingly smiling at the reminiscence of her wedding night. They had come a long way since then , she heard footsteps bounding the stairs in haste..he was here. Turning around she saw him step on the terrace his eyes scouring it till they found her, a relieved smile spread on his face. His head bent he walked slowly upto her. ?Der ho gayi..? he had apologized smiling sheepishly ,his eyes twinkling. ?Koi baat nahin ?der sey sahi aap aaye to.?

His head had immediately shot up the twinkle in his eyes deepening ,portraying them as burning bits of coal. How could anyone be so genuinely pure at heart he had wondered, watching her perform the aarti. She had looked etheral to him, a deep longing had engulfed him now as he watched her dainty form .The wind ruffled his wild curls as he bent his forehead to receive the tilak , taking a glance at the full moon she had silently prayed for them ?.to be together?.forever.Closing her eyes she had placed the sieve afore her turning back to where he stood ,slowly she had opened them to watch him through it smiling at her. She had smiled too shyly as he held the copper container to her lips the water had felt like elixir to her, she stood still as he wiped a few stray drops from her lips his touch sparking a whole new sensation in her blood.

?Prachi main jaldi main terey liye koi gift nahin laaya..? he had confessed. Just then the door to the terrace had opened and Ayesha had walked in with Neev, dressed in a crimson sari clutching her aarti platter she had joined them in a blink of an eye. ?Chal Prachi? , Milind had said steering her to the door when Ayesha had cut in. ?Arey Milind teri Prachi ka pehla karvachaut hai or tuuney usey koi gift bhi nahin dii. Ch Ch Ch, kiya socheygi bechari aakhir ye iss ka pehla or aakhri karvachaut hai?koi na koi gift to milni hii chahiye bechari ko umer bhar iss karvachaut ko yaad rakhney key liye.? Chuckling softly she had reprimanded Milind.

?Apni bakwaas band ker Ayesha , chal Prachi? it was now difficult for Milind to control his temper. ?Meri bakwaas to band ho jayegi Milind lekin tuu Prachi ko yeh divorce papers to dey de jo tuuney iskey liye itney pyaar sey banwaye hain.? Prachi had looked up in shock as Ayesha produced a black file and thrust it in her hands. ?Parh ley Prachi, itni angraizi to tujhey aati hii hogi or agar nahin parh sakti to Milind sey parhwa ley, haan chawl main zarur parhai kii hai issney lekin angraizi eik dum mast aati hai issko.? Opening up the file Prachi was dumbfounded to see that it was indeed a divorce plea from Milind to her, closing the file she had looked up to see a devastated Milind stare at her in a daze. Silently she tore herself away from him and ran to her room, closing the door behind her.

Of all that she had endured for him he still had not trusted her enough to spend the rest of his life with her. She knew Ayesha still had a strong hold over Milind and she herself was not more than a mere mockery of the title she held of being his wife. Hot tears rolled down her cheeks as she sobbed convulsively, did this have to end this way? If he had planned on separating ways why not tell her then? Why act as if she meant the world to her? Maybe because she had been ill and he had not wanted any harm to come to her. Assuming this as the correct explanation she had made up her mind to do as he pleased. If divorce was what he wished he would have it even if it meant silent death on her part. The bedroom door opened with a slight push. Milind had followed her to the bedroom with heavy steps , how would he face her now? How would he explain all this as a huge mistake? He cursed the moment Ayesha had entered his life, gathering up all his courage he had walked in ?Prachi yeh papers?.dekh waisa nahin hai jaisa tuu samajh rahi hai? he was trying to put together the scrambled words of apology in his mind. ?Milind mujhey aap sey koi shikayat nahin hai aap ney wohi kiya jo aapko sahi laga. Aakhir mainey aaj tak diya hii kiya hai aapko. Na koi khushi, na hi koi umeed.? she was now standing facing him. Her tear stained face a picture of perfect agony, pain writ clearly over it, he could not believe this was happening. He had always considered her to be the more reasonable and clear headed of the two , yet here she stood telling him that it was perfectly natural for him to divorce her.

He looked at her mortified to the core, did she really mean all this rubbish. He had tried consoling her taking her hand in his but she had withdrawn it immediately , her flinching act had not gone unnoticed by him. ?Dekh Prachi yeh sach hai keh yeh papers mainey banwaye hain, yeh bhi sach hai keh main tujhey divorce dena chahta tha lekin tab mera ghussa merey dimagh per haavi tha. Mujhey laga keh tuuney Rhitvik ki sacchai mujh sey chupa ker mujhey dhoka diya hai lekin tuuney yeh sab sirf Sukriti key liye kiya tha. Jab mujhey iss baat ka ehsaas hua tab tak main papers key baarey main bhuul chukka tha. Aaj Ayesha ney merey cabin main aa ker merey lawyer ki baat sun li or ghalat matlab nikaal liya.Lekin aaj in papers ki mujhey koi zarurat nahin?

He had paused as her glassed eyes had met his worried ones, ripping the papers from the file he had shred them to bits. ?Main nahin jaanta keh teri zindagi main meri kiya ehmiat hai, lekin itna zarur jaanta huun keh terey saath ab mera eik rishta hai or who rishta main torna nahin chahta.Terey saath eik baar zabardasti ker chukka huun or uskey liye aaj tak sharminda huun ab dobara aisi ghalati nahin kerunga. Jab tak tuu khud nahin chaheygi main tujhey haath tak nahin lagaunga.? He had not waited to see her eyes follow his masculine form to the doorway as he strode out of the room. ?Milind!? a hushed whisper escaped her lips as he vanished in the hallway, the open windows allowed the night breeze to blow the shredded paper away as dried leaves in a storm. She sat down on her bed in defeat, why did she not see the truth. How could she hurt him, she would have to make up for this blunder. Wiping away her tears she had called the manager of Continental Hotel one of Milind?s favourites. ?I hope aap samajh gaye hongey keh main kiya chah rahi huun.? She had talked in the mouthpiece , ?Yes ma?am everything will be done.? The other person had assured her, ?Theek hai main puhunch rahi huun.? Replacing the phone she had smiled everything will be all right now, she hoped the night would go as she had planned then Milind would have no excuse to remain upset with her.

Walking down the stony path he had looked up to find Ayesha staring at him from the terrace, an evil smirk radiating from her face, he had hated her then.Upto that moment he had felt sorry for her miserable past, sympathized with her for her loss of a normal life but not anymore. He knew now why she had never gained happiness, because she had never learnt to give. It was always about her, her life, her mother, her revenge.Never about anyone else. He knew she had lived a lonely life with her mother?s mental health an added burden but never had she even tried to see the positivite side of life.. She had never acknowledged any of his feelings towards her though he had hinted countless times yet to her he was just another man whom she had not given a second thought when marrying Neev Shergill. She had left him to exact revenge from her family, and to make Prachi miserable. Never once did she look back to see what it had done to him, she had shattered him ,left him bitter and disgusted with the word LOVE. But it was Prachi who had given this word a whole new meaning. It was she who had shown him the possibility of a happy life .And now when he had accepted his life as it was, Prachi as his wife and love she wanted him back.He felt sick looking at her gloating, standing there on the terrace ,tearing his gaze away from her he had driven away to his favourite haunt, a remote corner of a park.

Stepping out on the concrete he had taken off his coat, the wind blew through the tree top nearby sending a cold rush through him. The night had begun to chill yet he felt too numbed to feel it?s iciness. A few dead leaves blew hurriedly across the grassy expanse of the park ,he sat down on the white painted bench, a sigh escaped his lips. Running his fingers through his ruffled curls he reviewed his whole life in a few moments , realizing he had come a long way since his chawl days.Everything had changed ..he had wanted to live a life with Ayesha one where he would have loved her and taken care of her, then Sukriti?s involvement had led him to Shah mansion, Alaap, Inder Shah and lastly Prachi. Never had he dreamt of marrying her yet it had happened because it was destined. He remembered his wedding night how he had shook her, cursing her, calling her names, holding her responsible for all that had gone wrong. But today he loved her not because of her beauty or her wealth but because of the woman she was. She had stood by him in all his problems, helping him solve them unknown to him, bore his wrath with patience, listened to his accusations silently and had even endured his abuse. She had accepted him as he was at her will yet today he himself was responsible for her lack of faith in his intentions, he had never trusted her it was only fair that she did not trust him either.Neither had he ever confessed that she now resided in his heart, every breathe that he took had her name in it, his life and his soul were her?s alone.Closing his eyes he stretched his arms out on the bench and lay back his head resting on the back of the bench. He felt tired now, tired of waiting, tired of wanting and most of all tired of being misunderstood. His phone had started ringing in his pocket, he read the number it seemed familiar.

?Hello? he had answered, ?Sir Vijay Khanna here from Continental Hotel?,a familiar voice had spoken up. ?Yes Mr Khanna any problem?. ?No Sir bas aap ko yeh batana tha keh aapkey French delegates ka group is waqt hotel main maujood hai. Unka kehna hai keh aaj aapki unkey saath meeting thi.? the manager had promptly filled him with the details. ?Meeting abhi..? he had checked his wrist watch which confirmed the time as 10:30 ?Theek hai unhain conference room main bithao, I?ll just be there.? He could not recall any meeting planned with any such delegation but then what had he to lose , besides returning home did not appear a very alluring option at the moment.

Watching him leave the house had left her exhilarated with happiness , finally she had been able to split them up. ? Ab dekhti huun teri prem kahaani amar hoti hai ya dum tor deti hai Prachi Shah?, she had mused loudly ? jaisey aaj Milind terey kamrey or ghar sey gaya hai waisey hii eik diin teri zindagi sey bhi chala jaye ga.? Neev had looked at her poisonously, he wondered what wrong had he done to deserve such a criminally insane woman as a life partner, finding it impossible to share the same space as her he had left immediately. ?Arey yeh Neev kahaan gaya?? turning around she became aware of his absence ?yaqeenan uss Prachi key aansuu ponchney gaya hoga. Chalo acha hua khud hii chala gaya, waisey bhi mujhey konsa uski aarti utaarni thi , konsa mainey uskey liye koi vrath rakha tha.Main jis kaam key liye aayi thi woh to mainey ker diya,?saying so she let out an evil screech of laughter.

In her room Prachi had quickly changed her attire, donning a crimson and burgundy sari with matted gold and sapphire blue embroidery and bead work , a gift Milind had recently bought for her .She had changed her jewellery settling for a precious gold set encrusted with rubies, amethysts and sapphires, she remembered eyeing it longingly at the jewellery shop once when she had gone shopping with him , the previous week it had been purchased by him . He had left it sitting on her dressing table with a message reading ?Issey tumhari khubsurti ki zarurat hai?. He had not said anything but when she had worn it his eyes had shone and his lips had curled at the ends in approval.Smiling she fastened the clasp of the necklace, placed her tikka exactly where her hair parated . Sliding the heavy matching earrings in her ears she finished off with the matching sapphire blue and crimson bangles. Watching her hands she shook her arms to listen them tinkle , she smiled looking at her reflection in the mirror, what would he do if he saw her this way.Saw how much she longed for him, his face would be worth watching. She wondered how he'd react when he found out, would he forgive her? The thought left her distraught. She knew his temper and had felt the hurt in his eyes when she had withdrawn her hand from his. But if not now then it would never be done, it had to be tonight. Tonight she would tell him, tell him that she loved him more than anyone, more than anything in the entire world, more than herself.

"Sir foreign delegates aapka honeymoon suite main intizaar ker rahey hain," he was informed by the manager the moment he stepped in the thick carpeted lobby of his hotel. He gave the manager a look as if he had lost all sanity."Foreign delegates...honeymoon suite...Conference room ko kiya hua hua jo honeymoon suite main meeting rakhni pari?" he asked sharply. For all the money he spent on their salaries this was not what he expected of his employees. Restraining himself from giving the manager a piece of his mind he waited for an answer . Swallowing hard Mr Khanna had lied "Sir woh dono booked hain, or bookings to cancel nahin kii jaa sakteen na." he had smiled sweetly at him.He had never even dreamt of lying to the owner of the hotel but he had to being instructed so by his boss's own wife, God he was in a fix.Milind had felt like boxing the manager's ears right then but was distracted by music and laughter."Yeh shor kaisa hai ? " he had asked as he heard merry laughter emanating from the lawns of the hotel premises. "Sir aaj Raheja group of Industries key maalik Mr Aditya Raheja ki shaadi hai to unka wedding reception yahiin hai."

Hmm he mused the Raheja's were good friends turning around he walked towards the lawns to congratulate the newly wedded couple.Postponing his one on one encounter with the manager till later he made way through the bustling lobby an indication to his thriving business.Reaching there he was filled with a sense of enjoyment as everyone there was busy dancing to the latest hits. The vast premises had been given a very touch , elegant wrought iron furniture in gold adorned the carpeted dais, while the chairs had been cleared away to make room for frenetic young girls and boys to dance to their hearts content. Aajkal key bachey he thought smiling , the band seated at the left of the main stage had struck a latest number which had made all there present jump to the dance floor with their partners. Senior Mr Raheja on spotting him had come forward to greet him "Mr Mishra , aap yahaan kaisey?Lekin ab aa hii gaye hain to please join the party."he was indeed jubilant on his son's wedding."Main zarur rukta per eik zaruri kaam hai to."he had tried explaining ."Oh come on ...thori der to rukna hii pareyga afterall aapka hii to hotel hai. aaiye main aapko Aditya or Sonia sey milwaun." saying so he had threaded the crowd with him in tow leading him to his son and daughter in law."Congratulations! "he had smiled at the lovely couple who had returned his warm wishes with equal warmth and sweet smiles.Drinking to their health and happiness he looked around, even amidst all this merriment and joy he felt lonely, roving his eyes on the couples busy swaying in each other's arms he was gripped with desolation. The band now had started on a sensuous track.

Labon ko labon pey sajaao ,kiya ho tum mujhey ab batao
Labon ko labon pey sajao , kiya ho tum mujhey ab batao
Tor do khud ko tum baahon main, meri baahon main,
Meri baahon main , meri baahon main.
Teri adaon sey dilkash khataon sey in lamhon main
zindagii sii hai,
Hayaa ko zara bhuul jao, meri hii tarah paesh aao,
Kho bhi do khud ko tum raaton main, meri raaton main,
Meri raaton main, meri raaton main.

Swallowing the last of his drink he decided to leave, if he stayed there any longer his hunger for Prachi would overpower him, he missed her so much he felt like crying.Watching him leave Aditya Raheja had come to see him to the exit, "Ab agli baar aap bhabhi jee ko bhi saath laiyega Mr Mishra, hum ney kaafi tareef sun rakhi hai unki.Kabhi milwaiyega family sey." He had invited him good naturedly. His thoughts reverted to Prachi again, hastily promising to do so he had walked the lawns with the singer crooning steadily. The song had touched his innermost feelings and his heart now felt as if it would burst any second. His craving for his wife had started making his body ache and before he lost control on himself and gave in to drinking at the bar he resolved to attend his meeting.

Terey jazbaaton main mehki sii saanson main yeh jo mahek sandali sii hai,
Dil ki panahon main bikhri sii aahon main soney ki khuwahish jagi sii hai
Chehrey sey chehraa chupaao, seeney kii dharkan sunaao
Dekh lo khud ko tum aankhon main, meri aankhon main, meri aankhon main.

The lyrics haunted him as he rode in the elevator bound for the top floor, hearing the faint click of the door open he stepped in the plush carpeted corridor walking soundlessly he reached the suite and pushing the door open stepped inside. At once he was engulfed by the luxurious splendour of the room. It was one of the finest suites in the hotel, he had a French designer flown in to do the interiors. The room was tastefully decorated with rosewood furniture, the couches, the footstools, the upholstered chairs, the tallboy and the large carved mirror on the south wall being of the same wood. The upholstery was a deep shade of lavender and pink matching the walls done in a lighter shade of lavender.A huge four poster bed lay in the middle of the room complete with lavender coloured gauze curtains, at the moment it was strewn with fresh rose petals. The room had been well stocked with roses in all available hues standing in silver vases. An intoxicating aroma of the flowers hung thick in the air.
Inspecting the room he saw a woman standing near the huge french windows , her back to him. This was definitely wrong, he had come to the wrong suite she was probably waiting for her husband not a stranger. Turning back he was about to leave when he heard a soft voice call him. Surprised he turned around to see Prachi standing there. Closing the door behind him he advanced towards her.She looked exquisitely stunning in the crimson and burgundy saree he had gifted her.Her hair was loose framing her face perfectly, the jewellery she wore was the one he had so lovingly bought for her.She looked breathtakingly beautiful he feared if he stared at her too long she may vanish as a dream. He had dileberately looked away lest he lost control on himself. "Tuu yahaan...Yeh sab kiskey liye.?" he had asked puzzled. Did he miss something? Now wasn't she supposed to be home sulikng, what was she doing here in this elaborately decorated room looking drop dead gorgeous.

"Humarey liye." she had answered, leaving him dumbfounded."Humarey liye...main samjha nahin." he was now thoroughly intrigued. He could see she was struggling to say whatever it was that she wanted to say, "Aap.....main woh.....aap itni jaldi chaley gaye main kuch keh hii nahiin payii." He did not speak now letting her continue. "Main ney aapko ghalat samjha...I'm sorry" her head was bent now and her hands clasped tightly in nervousness. "Aap ney kaha tha bina meri ijazat key aap mujhey nahin chuueingey , to..." she paused he could see her face flush now she was not looking at him.Was she going to say what he wanted to listen he had thought his ears strained as he listened carefully his hands folded on his chest he looked at her intently. She could feel his intense gaze on herself making her feel as if she would burst into flames. She could take it no longer stepping forward she had gently taken his hand and placed him palm on her chest. He was visibly astonished by her act ..."Aap ney mujh sey pucha tha meri zindagi main aapki kiya ehmiat hai Milind to ..aap ...aap meri zindagi hain...yeh jo dil dhadak raha hai Milind is ki har dhadkan per aapka naam likha hai. Meri har saans per , har lamhey per, yahaan tak keh meri jaan per bhi sirf aap ka haq hai Milind.....or kisi ka nahin. Main sirf aap sey pyaar kerti huun or hamesha kerti rahungi."

She had closed her eyes now feeling a heavy burden lift of her she had not realized how important this had been for them, he could feel her heart hammer incessantly in the confinement of her rib cage.So she loved him , he had felt a wave of emotions wash over him as he stood there .Slowly he stepped forward cupping her face in his palms he had kissed her closed eyes tenderly. She had looked up to meet his passionate gaze."Prachi tuu mujh sey..." he was still unable to believe that she loved him ..sensing his disbelief she had nodded her head in assent. "Sirf aap sey " she had replied and he had hugged her, enveloping her in his arms he felt he had found the reason to live. The cool night breeze blew from the open windows blowing Prachi's hair , gently moving back Milind had picked her up in his arms. Everything was perfect, the night, the atmosphere, their proximity. He placed her on the bed and sat down next to her. She could see the peace that had spread on his face ,he ran his finger on her bangles and smiled as they tinkled. Slowly he proceeded to take off her accessories kissing her passionately on her forehead and ears and finally her neck. She had let him kiss her revelling in the magic of his amorous touch, letting his soft lips explore her rich suppleness to the hilt.

Finally he had stopped, circling her lips with his finger he had searched her face for permission. Prachi's stomach fluttered, she'd never been in such a situation before but deep down she knew this was what she herself had wanted. He looked at her questioningly but was surprised to see a longing that matched his own. He leaned closer to kiss her, Prachi reached out and clasped her hands around Milind's neck guiding him to her lips. It felt as if time had stopped as his lips met her supple ones.Drinking in the rich sensation he had kissed her passionately. She had fondled his hair lovingly all the while feeling his curls run through her fingers, closing her eyes she had pressed closer to him. What had ensued was a series of events none had anticipated. Her skin had burned coolly as he had explored her, loved her carressed her.She had shed off all her inhibitions to flow in with the charisma the night had brought. She had not known how she ached for him only when she had felt his touch had she realized her longing for him.For him it had been the realization of a long awaited dream his desires, his wishes, his overpowering passion all had been released that night. Holding her in his arms he had felt like reaching heaven itself. They had both experienced euphoria in that one single night, a night worth all the wait.

The night had silently slipped away giving way to dawn, she was awoken by him stirring in his sleep. She lay snuggled to him her head resting on his out stretched arm.He lay close to her sleeping soundly tranquility etched on his face. She rose up to study his face carefully carressing his cheek. She wished she could be as relaxed as him. She had confessed that she loved him but he had not told her how he felt. More still now after consumating her marraige she felt all the more afraid of losing him. She knew Ayesha would never approve of them being together, feeling over powered by fear she sobbed silently. What would she do if she were to let go of him, not with standing the thought she wept her tears falling on his cheek.Feeling movement beside him he awoke , watching her sit crying baffled him. He straightened up immediately ."Kiya hua...tuu ro kyun rahi hai?" he asked concerned ."Kuch nahin " she had tried looking the other way but he held her by the shoulders turning her to face him. "Kiya hua bol na", he questioned her gently raising her face to his own. "Milind mujhey buhut darr lag raha hai...agar main aap sey duur....main jee nahin paaungi Milind." she lay her wet face on his chest."Tujhey kiya lagta hai main uss Ayesha sey ab bhi pyaar kerta huun? Nahin Prachi " he lifted her face and looked in her teary eyes. "Main agar pyaar kerta huun to sirf tujh sey, Ayesha sirf meri yaadon main hai or tuu...tuu meri saanson main. Insaan yaadon key bina to jee sakta hai lekin saanson key bina...saanson key bina jeena mushkil hii nahin na mumkin hai." thumbing away her tears he bent down to brush her lips with his own.The light from the still ascending sun now had found way in the room giving it a fresh radiance.Pulling on his shirt he walked over to the balcony opening the door, letting the moist morning wind ruffle his hair as it gently blew. He drew in deep breaths of the fresh air when he felt Prachi's soft touch on his shoulder looking back he smiled at her."Kitni ajeeb haina yeh zindagi har naya lamha eik nayi shuruwat laata hai, mainey yeh lamha kabhi nahin socha tha lekin aaj yeh meri zindagi ka sase anmol lamha hai. Jaanti hai kyun?" he had said looking at her."Kyun?" She had asked smiling"Kyunki tuu merey saath hai , sirf saath hi nahin balkeh meri hai." She could read the truth of his voice in his eyes. Shivering slightly in her satin night gown she folded her arms . He had noticed it, hugging her close to him he wrapped his arms around her, they had both watched the sun rising that morning. The dawn breaking on a new day , indicating a new beginning to their relationship, the sun had illuminated the sky covering it in brilliant hues. Orange, crimson and gold painting the world in a medley of colours and they both had hoped that the days to come would be as colourful with passion and trust as the breaking dawn.

Part 16

?Bhabhi ab kiya hoga??Sukriti had asked the same question question atleast a dozen times in the past half hour . ?Jo bhi hoga acha hoga Sukriti. Tum pareshan mat ho.? She had tried consoling her sister in law but to no avail.Milind had called Saket at his office and was supposed to reach to a definite conclusion regarding Sukriti?s marriage with him. Both of them had accompanied him and now awaited Saket.Milind pored over a file while they sat on a nearby couch, Prachi had tried catching Milind?s eye but he hadn?t looked up even once. She knew he was as worried as them, he may have appeared angry and unmoved yet secretly he feared the outcome of the ordeal facing him.If Saket turned out a gold digger as his mother and as Milind rightly suspected he would be more depressed than Sukriti. She had silently prayed for everything to go well as she could not see either of the two in pain. A knock was head on the door , ?Come in? he had called out and Saket had walked in confidently.Sukriti had told him about her past and relation with Rhitvik earlier which had left him hurt to some extent. But being the good natured person that he was he could not distance himself from her. After many sleepless nights and heart wrenching days away from Sukriti he had come to realize that his love for her was greater than her mistake. Rather he held her in high esteem for relating the entire scenario to him beforehand. And today he was seated before Milind Mishra the famous tycoon, the industrious hotelier and Sukriti?s elder brother. He had heard much about his strong character, impressive personality and presence of mind. He had even been upclose to him at the family picnic in Panvel but nothing could prepare him for the rendezvous that was to be held between them at the moment.

Giving him a long hard ,stare Milind had closed the file he had been studying. Walking up to his leathered chair he placed his hands on it?s head rest . ?Saket Shergill?.Neev Shergill ka bhai, Niharika or Pranay Shergill ki dusri aulad.Buhut suna hai mainey terey baarey main. Waisey jaanta to hoga tuu keh aaj tujhey mainey office main kyun bulaya hai?? ?Ji?, Saket had replied returning Milind?s stare and keeping his cool, though his palms were now lined with sweat. ?Tuu meri behen sey pyaar kerta hai, us sey shaadi kerna chahta hai. Usey khush rakheyga waghaira waghaira?? he had paused his tone sarcastic. Saket could see convincing him was not going to be easy. ?Tujhey kiya lagta hai terey yeh filmi dialogue sunkey main apni behen tujhey daan main dey dunga. Yeh bata tereyko is pyaar key badley main kiya chahiye? Mera ghar? Meri property ya phir teri nazar sirf meri property per hii nahin merey business per bhi hai?? Milind had now walked to his chair and had stooped low to be in level with Saket?s face. Resting his one hand on the table and the other on the back of Saket?s chair he stood fuming. Saket could see anger mist in his eyes, ?Bol? he had probed smirking at him. ?Bhaiyya!? Sukriti had protested . ?Tuu chup.? He had snapped only slightly turning his head to face her. His cold stare had left her silent. ?Mujhey na aapkey paisey ki zarurat hai na ehsaan ki?, finally Saket had found his tongue, pushing his chair he stood up to face a glowering Milind. ?Main Sukriti sey pyaar kerta huun yeh sach hai, us sey shaadi kerna chahta huun yeh bhi sach hai. Lekin is sey bara sach yeh hai keh mainey Sukriti ko kabhi aapki property hathyaney ka zariya nahin samjha. Mainey hamesha uska dard baantna chaha, usey khush dekhna chaha. Yeh jaantey huey keh who Rhitvik ki maa hai main usey or Rhitvik dono ko apnaney key liye tayyar huun. Is liye nahin keh aisa ker key main aapki ya duniya ki nazron main mahaan banna chata huun ,balkeh is liye keh main khud aisa kerna chahta huun. Pyaar main to mushkilain aati hain lekin un mushkil raaston per chal ker hii pyaar ki manzil milti hai. Or meri manzil Sukriti hai.? Sukriti had now started crying and held on to Prachi.

Saket had turned to leave when he felt a heavy hand on his shoulder , looking back he saw a smiling Milind. ?Mujhey nahin malum tha keh meri behen ki pasand itni achi hai,? he had told a bewildered Saket who was obviously confused by Milind?s change in behaviour. ?Main to sirf yeh chahta huun keh Sukriti khush rahey, usney jo ghalati?.? Milind had stopped short now overpowered by emotions. Saket had taken his hand in his own and had squeezed it gently. ?Bhaiyya ghalatian to sab sey hoti hain, Sukriti sey bhi ho gayi uski saza main Rhitvik ko nahin dena chahta.Uska to koi dosh nahin,? and Milind had hugged him.He could not believe that Saket was so magnanimous a person if he himself would?ve been in his place he could never have forgiven Sukriti. Prachi and Sukriti had joined them and Prachi had placed Sukriti?s hand in Saket?s as she smiled through tears. Prachi had found Milind blinking back his tears, she knew Sukriti meant the world to him and had hurt him deep but she knew time was the best healer. Slipping her hand in his she drew close to him, she could see the gratitude his eyes bore for her. At last things were getting settled.

Everything had been arranged Saket was to adopt Rhitvik the next day and soon he and Sukriti were to be married. To avoid any complications with Niharika they had decided to be upfront with her on the issue. Saket had informed her of his decision and she had raised a hue and cry as rightly expected of her. But Milind had stepped in , he had promised to give away two of his hotels and a brand new B.M.W to Niharika for his sister?s peace. Furthermore he planned to send them both to Turkey and get them settled there for good so that they may be saved of Niharika?s taunts and sarcastic remarks. The days had flown and Milind had found that his current busy schedule had not allowed him to spend quality time with his wife. True he had bagged another contract, endorsed another brand of beer and had attended countless parties with Prachi at his side smiling, soothing and assuring him. They?d come back exhausted she would listen to him attentively as he talked about his day. He?d fall asleep with her in his arms but he craved for spending some time alone with her, when he wouldn?t have to think or talk business.

?Maa batao na kiya khareedun didi key liye?? Soumya whined munching on an apple as Premlata expertly added spices to the dhokla cooking on the stove. ?Soumya tumharey paas or koi kaam nahin hai kiya jo yahaan khari mera maghaz kha rahi ho?? Premlata had a number of dishes to prepare and Soumya was no help which only agitated her further. ?Maa main to apple kha rahi huun, aapka maghaz thori. Waisey bhi Milind jiju didi ko itni shopping kerwatey hain keh ab to kuch baaqi hi nahin raha unko deney key liye.? She had made a comical face in exasperation that had made Ramu Kaka and and Premlata smile. Milind had just returned home a meeting being cancelled he had wound up his work for the day and driven home.He heard voices and tempting smells waft from the kitchen, reaching there he heard the conversation between Soumya and Premlata. ?Meri tareef ho rahi hai!? he had snatched the apple from Soumya?s hand and was holding it high up his head while she pranced around him jumping occasionally to retrieve it.?Jiju apna apple khao yeh mera hai,? ?Acha!? he had examined it closely. ?Naam to nahin likha tumhara is per?he had declared taking a bite of the fleshy fruit. ?Maa dekho jiju ko,? Soumya had stamped her foot in mock anger. ?Soumya kiya bachpana hai, Milind tum betho main tumharey liye dhokla laati huun?, she had gently scolded Soumya. ?Haan haan, jiju or didi key aagey to aapko kuch dikhta hii nahin. Kabsey puch rahi huun aapsey keh didi key liye kiya gift khareedun kal janam din hai unka. Lekin meri madad to kerti hii nahin.? Saying so she had stomped off . ?Yeh larki bhi naa.? Premlata had cast a relieved look in her direction now she could have some peace. ?Arey apna apple to leti jao.? Milind had teased her from behind. ?Yeh bhi didi ko khila dena?? pausing midway she turned back and asked him in a hushed whisper ?Apney kiya gift liya didi key liye?? she had tried gleaning out the information from him. ?Usey gift ki kiya zarurat hai?mainey apna aap jo usey gift ker diya hai?kaafi hai. Waisey bhi mujh sey behter gift usey mil nahin sakta!? he had teased her again munching away the apple. Soumya had cast one sympathetic look on his masculine figure and walked off assuming her theory that Milind had lost it all after Prachi as valid and concrete.

Hmmm he mused it was her birthday, his Prachi was born on that day, it had to be special, he would make it extra special. His eyes gleamed as he thought of the surprise he would plan for her. ?Maa kal Prachi ka janam din hai?? he had asked soberly. Premlata had assented telling him how Inder and the family always wished her early in the morning and then they would celebrate by throwing a lavish birthday party for her. ?Maa agar is saal uska janam din merey tareeqay sey manayein to?? he had looked at her questioningly . ?Kyun nahin?jaisa tum chaho.? ?To phir usey kal koi wish nahin kareyga.? ?Lekin kyun?? she had asked bemused by his idea. ?Surprise maa!? he had winked and she laughed.?Acha theek hai main ghar main sab ko bata duungi keh usey kal wish na karein jab tak tum na kaho.? Seeing him busy pondering on the next day?s plan she had prayed for their happiness to last forever.

Part 17

She had woken up to find him sleeping peacefully by her side, smiling she bent down and kissed his forehead. She had now come to love him so much that a minute with out him seemed to last for ages. Finishing her morning chores she had joined her mother for the morning puja. She remembered it was her birthday and usually her mother was the first one to wish her but today Premlata had forgotten to do so causing her to wonder. How could it be that her mother forgot her birthday but she refrained from reminding her, helping her prepare the breakfast. During breakfast no one wished her not even Soumya who found it hard to control her emotions and made it a point for Prachi to open the present given by her on the breakfast table itself. She was sad not a single person remembered her birthday. Silently she ate the remains of Milind?s omelet. He never completed it rather left half of it for her to complete, while he finished off her dhokla for her.

Milind had looked at her lost in her thoughts and then addressed her mother in law. ?Maa aaj aap log sham ko tayyar rahiyega , aaj meri eik friend ki party hai or usney sab ko party main bulaya hai.? Premlata had taken the cue and answered as rehearsed ?Lekin beta dost to tumhari hai phir hum sab wahaan kia kareingey.? ?Maa meri buhut acchi dost hai , kal hi London sey aayi hai, hum saath college main parhtey they , buhut jamti thi humari or who aap sab sey bhi milna chahti hai, waisey bhi aaj uska janam din hai or janam din ki badhai to mil ker hii dii jaati hai.? Prachi had looked up to see a smiling Milind inform her mother about the evening?s schedule. It hurt her to think that her husband and her mother were preparing to celebrate some long lost friend?s birthday while their own wife and daughter?s birthday was conveniently forgotten by them. It wasn?t that Prachi was very much into celebrations and parties but she really looked forward to her birthday each year. Maybe because it reminded her of Inder?s attention and love that he showered on her and made others do so too. She missed her father terribly and was suddenly overcome with a strong desire to run upto him and he?d turn around and bless her in his usual loving way . She stood up to leave when Milind called her out, ?Prachi zara tayyar ho ja jaldi.? ?Kyun?? she had asked surprised ."Woh Kaajal key liye gift khareedna hai or mujhey kuch idea nahin to tuu saath chal , kuch acha khareedney main meri madad ker dena,? he could see her crestfallen face and had turned his face the other way it was a difficult task for him to see her that sad. Soumya had stifled a giggle cross the table while Bobby dealt her a good kick to make her stop it lest she gave it all away.Baba had conveniently hidden his face behind the newspaper while Premlata smiled, her poor daughter unaware of her husband?s surprise . ?Theek hai aap nashta ker lijiye main aati huun.? she had replied heavy heartedly, whoever that Kaajal was , she sure was one heck of a woman as Milind rarely talked of any of his female friends. They must?ve been really good friends Prachi had thought while getting dressed and she shouldn?t feel jealous of her?..was she jealous? She was surprised that she was angry at a woman she hardly knew and who merely happened to be her husband?s friend. No she shouldn?t think that way afterall it wasn?t Kaajal?s fault her family had suddenly forgotten the fact that she too had been born today.

At the mall choosing the perfect gift was not as smooth a task as it seemed, she had shown Milind countless things that were beautiful and valuable, jewellery, clothes, perfumes even paintings from some renowned painters but he had rejected it all. She had borne it all with patience but that was running out fast ,what she could not understand was why Milind could not find anything upto her mark. Was she that beautiful ? or was it that Milind wanted to leave a lasting impression on her? Or did he really know her that well to buy the perfect thing for her? ?Milind kuch pasand aaya?? tired of roaming the fourth mall from top to bottom she had asked him wearily . ? Prachi kiya karun kuch uss jitna acha lag hi nahin raha uski gift sab sey achi honi chahiye. Eik dum mast, uskey jaisi.? The remark had certainly left Prachi angry but she silently watched as Milind inquired about a diamond necklace. As expected it was expensive more than Prachi thought was fit for gifting to some friend, she looked on stunned as Milind turned back to ask her about the design. ?Yeh kaisa hai Prachi??he had asked her touching the beautiful stoned object. ?Buhut khubsurat hai? she had looked at it in awe ?Us sey zyaada nahin? he had stated looking at her deeply.?Milind aapko nahin lagta yeh buhut zyaada mehenga hai? ? it certainly baffled her to see him act so unlike himself, he could see contempt in her eyes for his imaginary friend. This was more fun than he had thought it would be, turning to the salesgirl he asked her to pack it and charge it to his account. The drive back home was a silent one, Prachi had looked out of the car window unable to understand her behaviour , she could not figure out why him shopping for a friend had her upset. It wasn?t the first time he was shopping for someone, rather she had come to admire his taste , he always managed to get the most beautiful saris and fabulous jewellery when he shopped for her or her family. Then why was it that she did not like the idea of him buying anything for Kaajal, unaware of her sentiments he listened to the radio. The RJ certainly had acquired a fab sense of music playing wonderful songs. The car reverberated with a soothing track it was one of Milind?s favourites and he hummed along.

Tumko paaya hai to jaisey khoya huun, kehna chahun bhi to tum sey kiya kahun

Kisi zabaan main bhi who lafz hi nahi keh jin main tum ho kiya tumhain bata sakun.

Main agar kahun humsafar meri apsara ho tum ya koi pari tareef yeh bhi to such hai kuch bhi nahin

Milind had cancelled all his appointments for the day and had looked after the evening?s preparations himself, from the menu to the guest list he had taken care of doing it all in regard to Prachi?s choice. There definitely was gonna be a birthday bash one Prachi would never forget, considering it all done he had given a final call to Premlata to check on Prachi. He knew she was upset but he also knew that it was unlikely of her to share her thoughts with anyone the reason he worried about her. There was one last stint to finish and then he was all set for the evening. He had returned home to find everyone as excited as himself, assuring them of his plan as a success he proceeded to his room to find her standing with her father?s photograph in her hands. ?Papa aaj aap mujhey buhut yaad aa rahey hain, kaash aaj aap yahaan hotey to main itni akeli nahin hoti.? He could hear the pain in her voice and it tore his heart out for a brief instant he was compelled to tell her the truth but then the moment was gone she had returned the photograph in the drawer turning to the wardrobe rummaging through her clothes. Walking in he had handed her a few parcels and she had opened them to find a honey coloured lehenga embellished with chocolate and wine coloured minature stones. The embroidery was delicately patterned , it was a beautiful garment and he knew once she wore it , it would be priceless. She had suddenly turned silent which certainly was not a good omen for him, he knew her well enough to understand that she was hurt , he tried talking to her but she only replied in two letter words which wasn?t much progress.Checking the silver timepiece he was only too happy to find 7:00 pm just an hour away, Bas thora or intizaar Prachi he had thought watching her lay out his clothes for the evening, a black Belmonte suit with an ivory white shirt Perfect he had thought.

Stepping out on the concrete driveway she was still not very enthusiastic of the whole scenario, she had not wanted to attend the party but her husband desired her too and her love for him overran her anger . She felt lonely and deserted , throughout the day she had been tempted to remind him of the importance of the day to her but then what would?ve been the point? If you had to remind someone you loved about your special occasions it was pretty much useless in her opinion, so she had maintained her silence. Walking through the hotel lobby they were confronted with a few of his business delegates, they got talking it was fine till then until a beautiful woman wove her way to Milind and latched her arm in his, she was stunning dressed in a jet black evening gown. Practically leaning on him she pecked him on his cheek, ?Arey Kaajal tuu kab aayi is sey mil yeh meri wife hai Prachi? he had introduced them. ?Mrs Mishra I must say you have a very sexy husband inhain sanbhal ker rakhiyega!?she had purred.

Prachi looked at the woman in disgust and casting one complaining look at Milind walked off to the parking lot. So this was the Kaajal he was visibly dying to meet, his friend, his chum from college who hardly possessed any mannerisms , she had hated her falling over Milind. Prachi gave a damn to the celebrations at hand she just wanted to go home and cry her eyes out it wasn?t just her uncelebrated birthday that stung her rather her husband?s closeness to that inadequate woman he had the nerve to call his friend. ?Prachi!? she heard him call, she stopped ?Kahaan jaa rahi hai tuu , party ander hai.? ?Milind meri tabiyat theek nahin? she had lied avoiding eye contact with him. ?Woh sab tujhey dekh chukey hain, mujh sey terey baarey main puchaingey to main kiya jawab duunga?? he was now questioning her. ?Keh dijiyega meri tabiyat kharab ho gayi thi. Please Milind mujhey nahin jaana wahaan.?she had implored him. How could he let her walk away , what about the surprise he had planned but he didn?t want to force her. ?Theek hai Prachi main terey saath zabardasti nahin kerunga agar tujhey meri parwah hai to tuu merey saath zarur chaleygi.? Saying so he had walked off a few steps and then stood awaiting her. Looking back she had found him waiting for her, his eyes begging her to accompany him a few more steps and she could go home but she turned around joining him, on their way to the hall little did she know what lay in store for her.

As she stepped in the massive and elaborately decked ballroom she was shocked to hear everyone present scream ?SURPRISE!!!? not understanding it she stood transfixed while the guests wished her a happy birthday. She was too stunned to respond as she was flooded with bouquets and presents, how did they all know it was her birthday. She searched for familiar faces amongst the crowd and was surprised to see Milind gaze at her passionately from afar, so this was why he was so adamant on her attending the party.

The ballroom was decorated with hundreds of red and white balloons and candy striped streamers, weaving her way through the thronging room she appeared by his side ?Aap ko yaad tha?? she inquired in disbelief ?Kaisey bhoolta, tujh sey juri har cheez merey liye meri zindagi sey barh ker hai. Janamdin mubarak ho.? he had kissed her on her dimpled cheek. A thunderous applause had erupted as their friends teased them about getting a room. She was deliriously happy he had remembered it afterall more so her entire family had conspired with him in making her believe vice versa, but it was worth the wait. The press had covered the event and business associates had poured in later considering this a perfect opportunity to strengthen ties with the right kind of people. The cake was cut amidst cheers and laughter , she had held up the first piece to him . As he bit in the scrumptious chocolate cake their eyes locked. For a moment he was all she was aware of. The roar of the clapping hands, the voices of the people faded away, she gazed at him as if he was the only one present in the room, similar was his situation. For him time stopped when his eyes met hers, she held a magnetic charm that cast it?s spell whenever he was around her. Bobby had snapped his fingers between them making them jolt out of their trance. ?Didi humain bhi cake khilaney ka iraada hai ya nahin?? he had joked while Prachi had turned a bright shade of red. Milind had smiled instantly watching her hold out the same piece to her mother and brother. ?Jiju ab to bata do kiya liya hai didi key liye aapney?? Soumya had joined him in eating the delicious crab cocktail . ?Itni bari party dedi kam hai kiya? ? he had told her seriously yet she knew this was just the beginning his amused eyes betrayed his serious tone. ?Kuch nahin ho sakta aapka.? She had said enraged, he threw back his head and laughed his sister in law was one kid he had developed a fondness for.

She was busy serving Baba the appetizers when she felt her hand being tugged looking up she saw her husband pulling her away from the crowd, before she could say anything they were moving away from the buzzing ballroom. ?Milind hum kahaan jaa rahey hain?? catching her breath she had asked. He had not answered rather led her to his awaiting car and they had driven off in the dark. Puzzled at their departure she questioned him again ?Milind hum kahaan jaa rahey hain, wahaan sab humara intizaar ker rahey hongey.? ?Main maa or baba ko bata ker aaya huun who sanbhaal lengey or ab koi sawaal nahin.? He had answered plainly. An hour later he had parked the car in front of a stone house, stepping out she realized her feet had sunk in the soft sand . He held out his hand and she had taken it gratefully helping her up the short stairs he held out a silver key to her, gesturing her to unlock the wooden door. Stepping inside he flicked open the lights flooding the interior of the house with a warm glow . The summer house was spacious with large comfortable rooms and a fireplace. Each room had it?s own balcony and had picture windows that overlooked the ocean. The furniture was of a dark coloured mahogany which blended in with the contrasting pastel walls and curtains. The best feature was the bedroom done elaborately in mauve woven curtains a slightly deeper shade on the walls and a rich walnut wooded bed complete with soft chairs and cushioned couches in shades of ochre and sunny yellow. She had looked around in bewilderment her heart beating fast. One of her lifelong dreams had been to own a house near the ocean where she could lie awake listening to the waves lapping on the beach, the water singing sweet notes to her lulling her to sleep. And here she stood in one, he had watched her touch each object mystified and awed afraid of it being a dream. Looking out of the bedroom window she saw the sky sprinkled with twinkling stars, but the moon hadn?t risen yet. The water looked almost black only the waves beating on the beach tirelessly showed signs of movement.

It was situated in a beautiful part of Mud Island ,finally she had turned to him, ?Yeh sab..? he understood her amazement ?Terey liye..? he had answered honestly . ?Lekin aapko iss key baarey main kaisey pata chala?? he produced a brown leatherbound diary from a drawer and placed in her hands. ? Meri diary.? She was shocked now , he had been reading her diary her most treasured collection of herself. ?Main jaanta huun tuu naraaz hogi mujh sey, lekin yaqeen ker yeh sab jaan bujh ker nahin kiya mainey. Eik din tuu diary likhtey likhtey so gayi or main usey ghalati sey apney documents key saath office ley gaya. Jab parha to malum chala keh teri diary hai?.chahta to nahin tha keh bina teri ijazat issey parhun lekin tujhey samajhne ka or koi tareeqa bhi to nahin tha merey paas.? She could see he was telling the truth, walking up to her he looked at her intently ?I?m sorry bina tujh sey puchey issey parha?..maaf ker dey please.? She ofcourse was certainly not angry at him but resolved to pretend otherwise. Keeping a straight face she stared at him ?Or kiya kiya parha iss main sey? Or mujhey jaanney key liye diary parhna zaruri thi? Aap mujh sey bhi to meri pasand napasand key baarey main puch saktey they.? He found her blank face as an indication to her being thoroughly upset, frustrated he ran his fingers through his hair he was in deep trouble now she was obviously unhappy about her private thoughts being known by him. ?Tuu sahi keh rahi hai meri ghalati hai, tuu jo saza degi mujhey manzur hai bas tuu mujh sey naraaz mat ho.? Giving in to her feigned expression he had consented on being punished, seeing him that way had made her want to laugh but she controlled .

?To phir eik vaada kijiye.? Holding out her palm she had said, ?Kaisa vaada?? he had questioned her puzzled ?Yehi keh aap umer bhar yunhi mujhey chaheingey?..Kayamath tak!?. Grinning he had placed his hand on her palm closing in the distance between them had whispered ?Maanga bhi to kiya who jo sirf tera hai?.vaada sirf tujhey chahunga?.Kayamath tak.? She had hugged him as tears of happiness flowed down her face, she had never known that she could love someone to such extremes, neither had he expected to consider someone his life. Gently pulling her away he was surprised to see her crying. ?Prachi eik vaada tujhey bhi mujh sey kerna pareyga.? She had looked up at him through her wet eyes . ?Kiya?? ?Yehi keh ab tuu royegi nahin.? ?Kyun?? she had asked softly ?Tujhey kaisey bataun Prachi keh terey aansuu merey dil per girtey hain.? He had replied bending down to kiss her tears away. ?Vaada.? She had said laughing as he scooped her in his arms, heading for the bed, he had presented her the diamond necklace and she had worn it her face sparkling with radiance outshining the lustrous diamonds. ?Yeh to aapney Kaajal key liye khareeda tha.? she had joked ?Kon Kaajal ?? he had replied naughtily pulling her close he had kissed her lips softly .His yearning for her had crossed all limitations and she had not stopped him putting her arms around him she had let his warmth engulf her. They had spent a memorably wonderful night together at their summer house and she had lain awake a long time listening to the waves smiling to herself, if dreams coming true was so wonderful a feeling she'd had dreamed of this night lasting forever, right there in his arms...it was paradise for her, no birthday of her's had been so memorable as this one .She turned to gaze him lovingly, "Prachi " he had murmured "Main tujhey chor ker kahin nahin jaaney waala saari zindagi pari hai mujhey dekhney key liye." pulling her closer still he had kissed her eyes close, "Thank you Milind itna acha birthday gift deney key liye"resting her head on his outstretched arm she had smiled in sheer bliss.

He cast a sidelong glance at her unconscious figure sprawled on the master bed, sipping his tea he leafed through the morning paper, smiling he browsed through it.This surely was his lucky day "Tycoon Celebrates Wife's Birthday In Style." The bold header caught his eye.He skimmed through the article his eyes finally resting on an inset picture. A very shy Prachi receiving a birthday kiss on her cheek from Milind.Placing the paper on the coffee table folded on that page he stood up to walk over to her.He recalled the previous night's events vividly, they had been attending a meeting with their prospective clients when he had received a call from Mr Mishra inviting him and Ayesha to Prachi's surprise birthday bash. He realized the confidence Ayesha had in her stunt performed on the Karvachaut and well anticipated her disbelief and shock on coming face to face with the stark truth that her actions had only caused a deep and lasting positive impact on Milind's relationship with Prachi. He had overheard Prachi instruct the manager for the decorations in the suite and had realized what lay in store. But he had wanted to see Ayesha's reaction to the news of Milind celebrating Prachi's birthday, he knew it was now or never. He had hoped that feeling defeated she might confide in him as he had won over her trust to a large extent. Most of all he had wanted her to feel the pain she had inflicted on others and so had not informed her as to why exactly they had driven to Intercontinental that night.
Unaware of what lay ahead Ayesha had barged in the ballroom only to find Milind planting a passionate kiss on Prachi's cheek. She had watched stupefied as Prachi held out the cake to Milind and their eyes locked in the most romantic stare. Her own eyes had widened in horror and panic as Milind had pulled Prachi on the dance floor swaying to a soothing and mellifluous track. Overcoming her initial shock she had tried to fly over to where they stood but Neev had swiftly caught her in the act. Slipping his arm around her slim waist he had dragged her out in the deserted lobby while she kicked and punched him in blinding fury. Yet he had held on to her lugging her through the parking lot he had hauled her in the car while she screamed in anger cursing him, Prachi and most of all Milind.Strapping her in he had driven back home, once there she had freed herself of his grasp and had run to their bedroom. He had heard glass shattering and fabric ripping from where he stood in the hallway, she had wreaked havoc on the room and he had let her do it considering it the safest bet on her venting her anger. Finally it had stopped and what was left was a distinct wailing emanating from the room, he walked in to find his bedroom resembling a tsunami hit beach. It was littered with her makeup accessories the bed spread and comforters had been snatched away denuding it completely. The pillows had been ripped open their downy contents sailing through the air. Curtains had been pulled down ,the large mirror on the wall smashed to smithereens, bits of the china flower vase lay scattered on the carpeted floor. In the middle of it all she sat slumped beside the bed, her chest heaving out of control, nails gouging on her bare arms , howling in a desolate bottomless rage.He stood there petrified unable to deal with the overwhelming misery his or hers he was unable to decide. He sat down beside her and had tried consoling her but she had pushed him away. He watched silently as she emptied an entire bottle of the strongest liquor inside her smashing the bottle on the wall.

"Kyun kiya aisa Milind kyun!" she wept "Mainey kiya nahin kiya tujhey paaney key liye or tuu ney uss Prachi ko chun liya.Konsi kami thi merey pyaar main?" Neev had felt relieved to see her drowsy, she was drunk and struggled to keep herself upright but her conciousness gave way to the alluring numbness of the intoxicating drink. It was then that she had admitted to all the evil deeds she had committed from the fake one night stand with Milind to the failing of Prachi's car breaks, the countless lies she had spun but to no avail.Prachi had triumphed through it all, her love for Milind had overcome all the hurdles created by Ayesha. Neev had felt like celebrating at that very moment, the hope he had long harboured in his heart had been rightly fulfilled. He had always suspected that fateful night between Ayesha and Milind as a staged act and his firm belief in it as a profound possibility had finally paid off. He had quickly done away with the distorted remnants of the shattered glass. Returning all the strewn objects to their respective places he had laid Ayesha on the bed to wear it all off. Chuckling to himself he now awaited the curtain raiser to her act, knowing her only too well he was aware that she would not give up without a fight.

Milind had awoken to find her nestled in his arms sleeping soundly, he smiled as he saw his hand overlain by her soft one.Probably at some point in the night she had pulled it over her waist unknowingly and still held on to it her fingers interlaced in his. He wished he could stay there watching her sleep but he couldn't, he had an important meeting to attend and he wanted her safe at home before he left for the office, punctuality he had learnt was a valuable asset in his profession.Sighing he kissed her on the forehead, gently smoothing her hair he caressed her cheeks while she stirred in her sleep. Groggily opening her eyes she gazed up to meet his passionate look her day had definitely started on a good note.Pulling on his clothes he had helped her make the bed while she gathered her ornaments and his accessories, casting one final look they had both walked out to see a glittering ocean. Breathing in the salty morning air they had taken a walk on the wet beach hand in hand, the drive home was indeed a pleasant one.

She had awoken with a throbbing headache, pressing her forehead with her palms she had seen Neev flick through the paper. Steadying herself she managed to walk to the bathroom a hot shower had done her good while she watched the needles of water hit the white tiled floor her mind worked like a machine scheming, planning and worst of all plotting on a deadly scheme. Walking out in her robe she was yet again shocked to see the article covering Prachi's birthday the day before , fresh tears stung her eyes as she shred the paper to bits. Neev had not commented rather had chosen to stay as a mute witness to her ordeal, pouring out piping hot black coffee he had handed it to her, "Tumharey sar key dard key liye acha hai." he had stated and had promptly walked off to join the others for breakfast.

Ayesha descended the stairs to see Prachi and Milind seated along with the others, she had hated Milind casting loving looks to Prachi by his side while she served him his breakfast. Breakfast at Shah mansion was a grand affair Baba made it sure that everyone ate together in the best of spirits. Following the routine Ayesha had pulled a chair besides Neev trying to find consolation in her toast as she bit it half heartedly. Niharika Shergill had graced them with her presence then with Saket and Rhitvik in tow. Baba had been surprised to see Saket sporting a baby but Niharika was quick to churn out a heart wrenching tale about him being an orphan and Saket having adopted him for a bright future. Sukriti had been only too happy to see her son and played with him seeing her happy had made everyone present heave a sigh of relief as unlike Milind, Prachi and Saket all were unaware of the truth about Rhitvik. Niharika had then informed them about the wedding date being finalized within a week and Milind had consented willingly.Turning to Milind Baba had patted him on his shoulder "Tuu kitna badal gaya hai Milind ab kitni achi tarah sey apni zimmedarian nibhaney laga hai. Yeh sab bahu ki wajah sey hua hai, usi ki sangat ka asar hai yeh." Milind had smiled at her while Prachi had looked back at him shyly. Watching Sukriti and Saket have a ball of a time with Rhitvik Baba had expressed his heartfelt desire "Milind ab main chahta huun keh mera bhi Rhitvik jaisa eik pota ho, aakhir main bhi dada kehlauun." The pink in Prachi's cheeks had turned to crimson she turned to flee but Milind held her by her wrist. She had avoided meeting his gaze but once Baba had resumed his talk with Premlata, he had bent down to whisper in her ear, "Ab to baba bhi yehi chahtey hain kiya khayaal hai phir, akeley to merey bas ki baat nahin , madad kareygi na meri?" she could see his eyes twinkle in merriment with one last effort she had managed to free her wrist and had bounded up the stairs in haste. Baba had felt deliriously happy to see his unruly son tamed by his meek wife and in his turn Milind had let her go his eyes following her till the last step of the staircase. Ayesha had watched all this in disgust she had realized Milind had started caring for Prachi but the fact that he wanted to have his children from her was unbearable, pushing away her chair she strode out in an attempt to find solace in her work.

Part 19

A week had flown by in the blink of an eye and before they knew it the wedding day had arrived. It had been a hectic week for the entire family Prachi and Premlata had taken responsibility for seeing to all arrangements, from the dresses to the menu and decorations for the mehendi, sangeet and the wedding itself. Countless trips to the malls, tailors and the jewellers had exhausted them both.Milind had helped immensely spending lavishly on the urgent ceremony. He could've postponed the wedding to a later date but he knew the more he delayed it the more Niharika would try to extract from in the name of his sister's happiness and welfare. Neev and Ayesha had been of little help though Neev had offered his services but Daadi had politely advised him to assist his own family in the wedding arrangements. Finally the big day arrived, the wedding rituals were to take place in Shah Mansion itself and it had been beautifully decorated for the occasion. Tinsel streamers and mirrored strips adorned the walls of the mansion while the pillars, balustrades and stair rails had been covered in bands of multi coloured flowers. A low red carpeted dais was set up in the centre of the hall where the holy fire burnt warmly. The guests had started pouring in and soon the fanfare of the baraat would be heard.

Giving Sukriti's makeup the final touches Prachi had advised her to rest in her room till she was called for downstairs. Rushing to her own room she had quickly changed in her navy and emerald shaded lehenga. It had been her choice and despite Milind's desires of watching her wear it before the occasion itself she had not given in. Brushing her hair hurriedly she viewed herself in the mirror the garment certainly complimented her beauty and the stone jewellery she wore added to the charm. Lastly she went on to tie her blouse strings the most difficult task of all. Struggling with them she did not notice Milind step in the room noiselessly . Slowly she worked her way from the top tightening the loose strings patiently . Halfway through she felt a masculine touch on her hand, startled she looked up in the mirror to see him watching her playfully. Tightening all the strings he tied them in a firm knot at the base of the blouse, he had turned her around so that she stood facing him. She could smell his perfume the one he had carelessly sprayed on himself that morning. Her eyes had lowered automatically resting on his lips unknowingly her face had lifted towards him . He had watched her intently absorbing her presence within him, he was quick to notice her posture but had stood there. Regaining her senses she had cast a flustered look on his hands which now rested on her waist, feeling his eyes on her she had asked demurely "Aisey kiya dekh rahey hain?" "Tujhey" he had replied softly, running the back of his fingers on her cheek he had watched her close her eyes on his touch. Kissing her softly on her cheek he had closed in on the distance , realizing his intentions she had tried making him aware of the importance of the event at hand. "Milind" she had whispered "Hmm" he replied enjoying the effect he had on her, he could feel her melting in his arms. "Milind der ho rahi hai." ''. "Honey dey." His hands were now running over the entire length of her back "Baraat aati hogi." Oh did this wedding had to take place now she had thought. "Aaney dey" he had replied calmly. Kissing her teasingly on the corner of her lips he had felt her gasp for more when they heard Baba's voice call out to them. Snapping out of his hypnotic effect she had opened her eyes in alarm"Milind Baba bula rahey hain'.mujhey jaana hoga." Not freeing her from her grasp he embraced her firmly. "Merey sawaal ka jawaab kab deygi?' he had asked sheepishly yet his charcoal eyes indicated amusement. Gently breaking away from his embrace she had tried running past him when she stopped with a jerk. Her dupatta was held by him"Jawaab" he had repeated, not showing any signs of letting the glittering duppatta slip away from his hands. He had now starting wrapping the dupatta around his hand causing her to retreat her steps straight back to him. "Kaisa jawaab?" she had questioned him abashed, with the entire duppatta wound around his hand he had her standing a breathe away. "Soch ley" he had murmured "Jab tak jawab nahin aayega hum neechay nahin jayeingey." Astounded by his remark she found herself cornered.

Baba's remark on wanting a grandson of his own a week earlier had certainly ignited a passion for fatherhood in him but he had decided this to be a mutual decision and so awaited her consent on the issue. Perturbed she studied his insouciant figure in cobalt blue jeans and a starch white shirt, who wouldn't have wanted to have children with him he was so devilishly handsome sometimes she found it hard to believe it was indeed a reality that she was his wife. Ofcourse she had every intention to have his child and desired one as much as he did but it was just that words failed her when she was around him. His presence took away most of her senses and sanity hardly prevailed once he started talking but how could she tell him this. Tell him that words faded and surroundings vanished when he was with her all that remained was their love, all she could see was his eyes deep as the ocean, his lips that when they started talking time froze for her. Heaving a sigh and gathering her wits she had stepped forward unwinding her dupatta from his hand she had smoothed it back, then cupping his face in her hands she gently brushed his lips against hers "To kiya naam socha hhai aapney humarey bachey ka?"she had whispered in his ear. She had watched his eyes light up in a pleasant surprise the radiance reflecting on his face and she knew she had done the right thing. His lips had curled in an impish grin hugging her in gratitude and love he had confirmed the question as a reality. "Kiya tuu sach main yeh chahti hai?" he had asked again. "Haan" she replied confidently. Once again Baba's voice had reached their ears, the distinct sound of blaring trumpets and fireworks confirmed the arrival of the baraat. Prachi had handed him his clothes an ink black embroidered kurta complete with a starched white dhoti and had rushed downstairs. A few minutes later he had joined her looking equally handsome in his changed attire.Together they had welcomed Niharika, Purvi and Neev and an ecstatic Saket riding a golden tasseled and bridled white mare.

The wedding rituals were performed in a blissful atmosphere they had both tied the sacred knot tying Sukriti's dupatta to Saket's stole firmly and had showered them with petals as they circled the holy fire while the pundit chanted mantras in Sanskrit. The newly wed couple then sought the blessings of the family members and a teary eyed Sukriti had departed dolefully leaving Milind equally upset and wet cheeked. Prachi held fast on his hand assuring him, she knew his sister meant a lot to him more than that her happiness the only reason he had consented to the wedding in the first place. Wiping his tears with her fingers she had soothed his soul as well. Ayesha had watched all this in patience though her blood bolied everytime Milind touched Prachi. If she had had her way not one soul would've stood breathing under that roof at that exact moment. But she had learnt to disguise her feelings and bear it all with a smile. Making her way through the crowd of guests she had reached to where Baba and Milind stood with Daadi and Prachi. "Sukriti ki shaadi achey sey ho gayi , Neev or main soch rahey they keh shaadi ka reception humari taraf sey ho." She had casually remarked "Lekin beta iski kiya zarurat hai Milind dekh leyga" Daadi had stated ."Mera matlab hai humara bhi to kuch farz banta aakhir ko Sukriti meri devrani hi to hai."she had clarified. Milind had eyed her suspiciously her offer though charming did not convince him "Ayesha main dekh luunga waisey bhi ab sab kuch tey ho chukka hai." But Prachi had coaxed him"Agar woh Sukriti key liye kuch kerna chah rahi hai to kerney dijiye reception hii to hai kahin bhi ho iss sey kiya farq perta hai." Milind had cast one complaining look at Prachi and had retorted icily "Theek hai jisko jo kerna hai karey." And had walked off in the house , smiling Ayesha had watched Prachi dash after him in haste. "Abhi to sirf nazariya badla hai, tuu dekhti jaa Prachi main kaisey teri duniya badal duungi or tujhey pata bhi nahin chaleyga." Neev had been pretty much confused at Ayesha's silence after her hysterical outburst a week earlier. He had just sent his family and had returned to watch the entire scene from a distance "Phir shuru ho gayi iski chaalein" he had thought but whatever it was he was sure to find it out soon.

As he watched her walk away Neev had a strange feeling in his gut he realized it from her quick, decisive way of walking now didn't she walk like this when her mind was all set on evil. He had felt a slight panic rise in his stomach and then like a lost memory the feeling was gone. Maybe he was imagining things that was all. The hotel Ayesha had chosen was situated atop a hill on the outskirts of the city. It was renowned for it's scenic location set against a backdrop of mountainous terrain overlooking a lake. The hotel had been constructed on a wide plain expanse cut out of the hill which added to it's splendour , for miles around the luscious green vegetation soothed the eyes after continous exposure to the city's bustle and pollution. It was indeed a beautiful landscape dangerous too as the steeply rising hill had a sharp, slithering scree to one side. Although the area had been marked off limits still it remained a constant hazard with the death count rising with each year. The hotel staff had been strictly instructed to keep all away from that territory. Both the families had reached the venue early as it was a good drive from their residences , the preparations had been done according to the occasion . The enormous ballroom had been done in blue and silver from the carpets to the candlestands everything was in twin shades of the respective colours. A huge cerulean chandelier hung from the massive ceiling while azure shaded chiffon curtains billowed in the arched doorways. The guests started coming in around 6 in the evening and an hour later the event was underway at a good pace. Sukriti and Saket danced away under the glittering Belgian chandelier while others joined them for a shake or twist themselves. The gnawing feeling that had tugged at Neev's stomach that morning had returned. Every now any then he would cast hurried glances across the room, everyone was having a wonderful time. Milind and Prachi whispered to each other at the far end of the room with Prachi blushing away at Milind's casual remarks, seemed as if they had sorted out their differences over the venue that morning. Premlata and Daadi stood chatting to Niharika and her pals from the Kitty Club. Soumya and Bobby burned the dance floor both having found dance partners to match their adrenalin. Alaap stood amidst a host of girls loving their banter on his looks while Suyesha seethed away. Baba was deep in conversation with Mr Raheja and Mr Mehra two of Milind's business associates who happened to know Baba well. He traced everyone but Ayesha, where could she be? Crossing the wide floor he reached the other side of the room a bar had been set up at this end catering to the guests wishes. He saw Ayesha sipping on a fresh lime juice propped on a stool. Bending slightly she had whispered something in a waiter's ear while she put a thousand rupee note in his empty tray. Winking at her coyly the waiter had smiled nodding his head in assent.

Prachi had received a call on her cell a few minutes later the static in the cell phone and the music from the overhead speakers hindered her understanding informing Milind about the call she decided to talk in the open air in a hope to get better signals. "Hello'..Hello'..Hello kon hain aap?" she had tried making communication but to no avail.Disconnecting the call she decided to go back inside when it rang up again "Hello'.Hello 'kon hai aakhir boltey kyun nahin." Finally a voice spoke up "Prachi Mishra '..agar apney pati key ateet ka raaz janna chahti ho to iss hotel key peechey waaley gate per aa jao." The caller seemed male but the voice appeared muffled, "Jaldi aana intizaar ki mujhey aadat nahin." Her hands had started shaking with fear pati ka ateet she had thought confused "Lekin mujhey to Milind key ateet key baarey main sab kuch malum hai" she had replied defiantly "Aisa tum sochti ho uss ney tum sey eik raaz chupaya hai agar jaanna chahti ho to hotel key pichley hissey main aa jao." The line had dropped then ,staring at her cell she was unable to decide on her course of action. Just then Neev had emerged from behind the glass doors."Prachi tum yahaan?" he had asked in bewilderment, snapping out of her thoughts Prachi was surprised to see Neev there "Haan woh phone sunney aayi thi." Judging by her expression and voice tone Neev figured out something was wrong and questioned her to which she immediately confessed the truth. "Prachi tumhain wahaan jaaney ki koi zarurat nahin hai." He had said in a firm voice but Prachi was adamant on going there "Ho sakta hai Neev woh log Milind ko blackmail kerna chahtey hon, mujhey wahaan jaana hi hoga aakhir aisa konsa raaz hai unkey paas Milind ka."Neev was furious and would not allow her to leave.Prachi had started walking towards the off limits portion of the hill with Neev in tow, not seeing his pleas have any effect on her he quickly messaged Milind to meet them at the backside of the hotel keeping up with Prachi all the while.
A cold wind had started blowing on the hilltop ripping at their lungs as they carefully made their way to the meeting point amidst the deep litter of pine needles. Overhead the pine trees swayed in a ghostly dance as the cold wish rushed through them.A full moon shone brightly in the night sky making it possible for them to make out large boulders and protruding rocks on their way. They hadn't been long when they heard the sound of twigs snapping quickly they scanned the premises but no one was there only a thick, close silence. Prachi's heart had now started thudding trying to appear brave she shivered inwardly, who was this man, why did he want to tell her any secret regarding Milind? questions seemed to race through her mind. Neev held his breath and waited straining to hear the slightest sound, when suddenly springing from behind a pine tree Ayesha emerged walking into their line of vision. "Ayesha tum yahaan kiya ker rahi ho?" Neev had asked his voice betraying his calm demeanor. "Wohi jo tum dono ker rahey ho" saying so she had slowly started moving towards them backing them to edge of the hilltop. Judging by her manner Neev had by now understood this as a trap he knew instigating her to action would prove fateful , slowly he had started moving towards her in an attempt to make small talk. "Main or Prachi to yahaan kisi ka intizaar ker rahey hain or tum?" . Ayesha had cast one disdainful look on his annoyed face and laughed out loud. "To samjho intizaar khatam hua, Prachi ko mainey phone kerwaya tha kyunki aaj main yeh khel khatam kerna chahti huun." Saying so she withdrew a gunned hand from under the fall of her bronze silk sari and aimed it straight at Prachi's head. "Ayesha hosh main aao yeh kiya ker rahi ho." Neev had tried to wrench the gun out from her hand but she held on to it firmly and pushed him back. "Aaj faisla ho kar raheyga yaa to yeh raheygi Milind ki zindagi main ya phir main."

At the party Milind had felt suspicious of Prachi's long absence pulling out his cell he decided to call her when he noticed a message from Neev reading it he had started running towards the enterance. He had run around to the other end of the hotel when he saw a narrow winding path leading to the edge of the hilltop amidst a thick crop of tall pine trees, he could hear voices from the edge, could they be there? Picking his way carefully he managed to reach them to find Ayesha pointing a gun at Prachi's head and Neev trying his best to coax her out of that heinous act.Watching the gun gleam in the moonlight his heart froze in midbeat "Prachi" he had whispered mutely. Running down he had crashed in on the scene stretching out his arm he had pulled Prachi by her waist out of Ayesha's target vision and hugged her in assurance. She had clung on to him in fright "Main huun na kuch nahin hoga tujhey" he had whispered softly. His appearance on the spot had startled Ayesha, she had called Prachi all alone but here she stood with two men who were ready to lay their own lives for her safety. "Milind tuu yahaan kiya ker raha hai?" she had blurted while a sobbing Prachi hugged Milind, this only caused her anger to increase tenfolds. "Main yahaan kiya ker raha huun'." Milind had repeated her words sarcastically "Tujhey kiya laga Prachi ko mujh sey juda ker deygi arey yeh haq to mainey maut ko nahin diya to tuu kiya cheez hai Ayesha." Saying so he had caught her hand and placed the gun on his chest. "Maarna haina tujhey to chala goli or maar dey mujhey''chala'chala na ab haath kyun kaanp rahey hain terey." Not having imagined this in her wildest dreams Ayesha was at her wits end. "Milind tuu yeh kaisi baatein kar raha hai 'dekh Milind main teri Ayesha huun'sirf teri , tuu mujhey iss Prachi ko maarney dey phir hum dono eik saath raheyngey." Her malady was clearly visible now as she begged Milind to let her kill Prachi and to spend the rest of his life with her. "Saath, apnapan, pyaar , rishtey , jazbaat yeh sab tuu kab sey samajhney lagi Ayesha? Haan eik waqt tha jab main terey liye jeeta tha , iss dil main sirf tuu thi lekin ab main who nahin raha. Na tuu meri zindagi hai or nah hii mujhey tujh sey koi pyaar hai. Meri liye agar koi mera sab kuch hai to who sirf Prachi hai or issey kuch ho yeh mujh sey bardaasht nahin hoga. Tuu maarna chahti hai na issey chal maar, lekin issey maarney sey pehley tujhey Milind ki jaan leyni pareygi."

Neev had started closing in on Ayesha inch by inch she had her back to him which was an advantage as she was too engrossed in her conversation with Milind to pay any attention to him. "Milind tera mujh sey bhi to eik rishta hai, or woh raat jo hum ney saath guzari thi kiya woh tera pyaar nahin tha. Isi rishtey key baarey main bataney key liye to mainey Prachi ko yahaan bulaya tha. Kiya tujhey kuch bhi yaad nahin Milind?" she had now started losing it totally , tears running down her face. "Nahin tha who mera pyaar , na hii woh koi rishta tha, woh sirf mera gunaah tha or hamesha raheyga." Prachi had felt his grasp on her slacken while he screamed those words in anguish. He had fallen down on his knees and wept tears of repentance "Gunehgaar huun main Prachi ka , uska vishwaas tora mainey , usey dhoka diya ." Bending down Prachi had held him by the shoulders and helped him stand up , wiping away his tears she had made him meet her gaze. "Koi dhoka nahin diya aapney mujhey Milind, yeh baat to main buhut pehley sey jaanti thi." Surprised Milind had looked at her in pure disbelief. "Jis raat Baba ney humarey liye pooja rakhwaiyi thii aap ney buhut pii li thi or nashey main sab kuch keh diya. Milind mujhey aap per pura bharosa hai or mujhey yaqeen hai uss raat aap dono key darmiyaan kuch nahin hua hoga." Her words had certainly left all three stunned. Milind could not believe that his wife's love and trust for him ran so deep within her soul, Neev had been stunned to realize that Prachi's faith in Milind had never been wrong and Ayesha was stumped to know that her last card haven been played she still hadn't achieved anything. In a fit of rage she raised the gun but this time Neev was on her in a flash , he sprang forward and took a swipe at the gun toppling Ayesha over in the attempt. They both rolled over to the edge pushing Neev away from her Ayesha tried to retrieve the gun from him rushing forward towards him she grabbed at the gun but failed . Neev managed to swerve away in the nick of time causing her to stumble right off the edge, she disappeared over the edge so quickly she didn't even scream. A few rocks had come loose and the sound of them accompanying Ayesha to her doom echoed off the mountain walls. "AYESHA! " Prachi had screamed in horror running to the edge but Milind held her back while she cried hysterically, trying to free herself from his grasp attempting to jump down herself in a mad dash to retrieve her. "Milind.. Ayesha'woh gir gayi ussey bacha lein na. Ayesha!!" she shreiked uncontrollably pummelling Milind to let her go free but Milind knew all was lost and he had let her vent her grief and anger on him till she had fallen unconscious in his arms. The three of them had returned to the hotel yet both Milind and Neev knew that their lives had been altered in a very bizarre manner.

A furious storm had whipped up on their walk back to the hotel, the wind howled as it gusted through the pines sounding like sad dirges lamenting on a great loss. A doctor had checked up on Prachi coming to the conclusion that the unfortunate event had caused her immense sorrow the magnitude of which had made her slip in a temporary state of unconsciousness. He had advised Milind to take great care of her as she was in an extremely frail mental condition. Both the families had been shocked to hear of the entire ordeal, Milind had not withheld any truth this time. He had informed them about Ayesha's plans and evil schemes, it was then that Neev had informed them of the entire one night stand between Milind and Ayesha as a staged act on her part to lure him in her trap. He had also revealed his side of the story, his gameplan and the course of action he had adopted to wheedle the truth out of her. Milind had never felt more indebted to Neev, he had apologized for his behaviour towards Neev throughout their period of aquaintace and had resolved to hold him in high esteem from then on. Due to the deteriorating weather conditions the guests had departed early, the next morning a search party had been organized to search for Ayesha and the team had expertly scoured the entire ravine late that evening Ayesha's bloodied corpse was found entangled in a patch of prickly bushes at the foot of the ravine. The body was sent for post mortem and the death had been ruled out as an accident by the coroner. Ayesha's dead body had been driven home for a proper funeral, at the shamshaanghaat Neev had watched Ayesha burn on the pyre the fire lick at her mottled blue body Premlata wept silently though Ayesha hadn't accepted her as her mother but she had always considered Ayesha as a daughter. She felt robbed of a precious object that day. Milind stood silently watching the smoke emit from the burning heap images of Ayesha flashed through his mind he felt a part of him had died that day, he may not have loved Ayesha but she had been close to him throughout his life and that intimacy had certainly left a mark on his life. Prachi had felt as if her father's last wish had burnt on that pyre she had cried tears of repentance screaming in agony on her loss asking her father to pardon on her on not being able to fulfill his last wish of keeping Ayesha happy and had fallen unconscious . Milind had cast one sad look at the burning piece of flesh on the pyre and had walked away with Prachi in his arms, it was indeed a sad ending to a sad life.

5 Years later.
"Manish choro Sonia ko." Sukriti had wailed as she saw her nephew hug her one year old daughter with overwhelming passion and she cried in retaliation to his smothering hug. "Bhabhi samjhaiye aapkey betey ko buhut shararti ho gaya hai." "Manish behen ko tang nahin kero." Prachi had warned him again .Milind had folded his newspaper and had looked up to see his three year old son give his mother a rather bored look, catching his eye he had gestured him to come sit with him on the sofa and his son had run upto him . Anyone looking at them would have known them to be father and son, Manish possessed the same unruly locks, charcoal eyes and impish smile like his father even their complexion was the same. While she bore Manish, Prachi had a large picture of Milind nailed on their bedroom wall when he'd enquired her about it she had simply replied "Takeh mera beta bilkul aap jaisa dikhey." He had laughed it off then but now after three years of his birth when his son looked exactly like him he knew why she had got that picture on the wall. 'Kiya hua Sonia kyun ro rahi hai?" he had asked him in a low voice "Aisey hii Papa uski to aadat hai or Mumma mujhey daanttey rehti hai." Milind had to restrain a smile on the remark , it was Neev's wedding and both Sukriti and Prachi were deep in discussion as to what should be the venue for the occasion they had both found valuable discussion time after a week and hoped to settle the matter instantly. Meanwhile Premlata and Niharika sat discussing the menu and guest list and Saket obediently jotted down instructions often casting a wearied glance at Milind. Baba had then walked in with the pundit announcing the wedding date a month after. Daadi had brought sweets from the kitchen and everyone had a bite afterall it was Neev's wedding that too to Soumya ironic as it was Neev had certainly been destined to become a son in law of the Shah parivaar. He had felt shattered after Ayesha's death not because he loved her but because he had felt responsible for her and felt guilty at not completing his responsibility. He had housed Amrita in a good mental asylum and went to meet her at regular intervals. Soumya had helped him arise out of his misery and in the course of time they both had formed a deep and lasting bond with each other one that Neev had not formed either with Prachi or Ayesha.

Saket had joined Milind on the couch showing him the list of instructions while Milind laughed his head off , Neev too had returned from the office and joined them. "Kuch chor bhi do Sukriti shaadi key baad key liye" Saket had taunted her who seemed wrapped in her banter about the venue decorations.A fight had now ensued between Rhitvick and Manish which had drawn everyone's attention towards them. "Manish main ney samjhaya tha keh ab sharat nahin kerna." Prachi had reprimanded her son, "Iss sey bhi to bolein na Mumma mujhey Sonia key saath khelney nahin deta. Kehta hai who sirf meri behen hai tum apni jaa ker ley aao." Voicing his turmoil amidst all he did not witness the smile that his remark has invoked on all present. "Mumma aap bhi mujhey Sonia jaisi behen laa do na phir main apni Preeti ko in sey nahin khelney duunga." "Preeti kon hai?" Prachi had asked in confusion . "Ofho Mumma jab aap meri behen laaogi to uska naam bhi to rakhogi na. Bas uska naam Preeti hoga aap Papa sey kahaein mujhey laa ker dein behen abhi." "Chal Milind teri to lag gayi jaa laa ker dey abhi issey behen." Neev had joked slapping his hand on Saket's open palm in delight as they both roared with laughter. "Arey saalon yahaan yeh meri vaat laga raha or tum dono mazey ley rahey ho , itni jaldi to Superman bhi behen nahin laa sakta iss key liye main kahaan sey laaon"he had replied in a light mood. Flustered Prachi had swept him in her arms "Aisey nahin boltey beta." She had tried cajoling him "Papa" he had screamed in mock agony. Realizing that it was time enough he stepped in the scene and saved his wife from further humiliation Milind had pulled him from his mother's embrace and placed him on his lap. "Papa dekhiye na Mumma ko." "Beta roz dekhta huun aapki Mumma ko, kyun kuch change hogaya kiya aaj?" "Nahin aap in sey kahiye mujhey bhi eik behen laa dein." Meeting Prachi's gaze he had repeated the request "Milind aap bhi bas"saying this she had walked off to their room and asking Neev to keep an eye on his son Milind had followed suit.

In the past five years he had lived and breathed Prachi and now knew her moods at the back of his hand. He could tell when she was angry, sad, depressed or excited and acted accordingly. It had been a long and arduous task on his part as Prachi hardly ever complained or lost control over emotions but Ayesha's death had changed her altogether with her father gone she had somehow managed to pull herself together though Ayesha's loss was imprinted on her soul. Initially Prachi had blamed herself for Ayesha's death she would cry for hours and often be restive at nights calling her out in her dreams, it had certainly been a living nightmare for him to see her in that sad and deplorable condition. He would sleep holding her close to him while she tossed and turned in restless slumber, praying all the while for her misery to end. Slowly and gradually he had been able to explain to her that Ayesha's death was an accident and certainly not her fault that it was meant to be. Finally a few months later Prachi had been pronounced as pregnant and that certainly had changed the situation for the better , they had decided it best to remember Ayesha as a cherished memory and not let her mistakes overshadow her innocent soul. Once Manish had been born Milind's fears had been put to rest Prachi had certainly devoted her time to the tiny bundle of joy in their lives and if she ever chanced to go down memory lane he would divert her attention to more exciting thoughts.

Reaching the bedroom he saw her collecting Manish's toys from their bed. "Naraaz ho gayi kia mujh sey?" he had asked her pulling her close to him, he could see she was mad at him. "Kiya zarurat hai Manish ki tarafdaari kerney kii? Na jjaney sab kiya soch rahey hongey. Woh to bacha hai aap to nahin." She had tried turning away but he held her hand firmly . "Kyun tuu nahin chahtii aisa?" he had felt her pulse quicken and seen her blush instantly which meant she surely did, not seeing her reply he had let go of her wrist and turned to leave. "Milind" he had heard her call in haste he stopped in mid step not turning back. She had turned him around so that he stood facing her "Jawab suney bina hii jaa rahey hain?" she had asked. "Jawab to main teri aankhon main parh chukka huun. Bin kahey bhi yeh buhut kuch keh jaati hain or zaruri to nahin keh har baat kahi jaaye." He had placed his palm against her cheek lovingly as he stared in the depths of her hazel eyes. "Mujhey itna jaantey hain." she had whispered in awe as she hugged him tightly a tear had dropped on his shirt from her eye. She had often considered herself truly blessed to have been wedded to him but it was times like these that made her afraid of losing him too just as she had lost her father and sister. He could feel her embrace tighten and knew it was another one of those moments when her fear overran all other emotions. Gently pulling her away he had wiped her tears "Main terey saath huun Prachi or hamesha rahuunga ab chalein nahin to koi or farmaish ker deyga tera beta." "Kyon aapka nahin hai?" Prachi had raised her eyebrows in astonishment. "Humara hai." he had replied pulling her along walking down hand in hand they saw Manish wedged between Neev and Saket sprouting a list of snacks he wanted from them for the evening . Sonia lay asleep in Sukriti's lap while Premlata and Soumya lay the table for dinner. Suyesha was busy helping Daadi in wrapping up the dresses strewn over the sofas while Alaap neatly stacked them in a corner, he certainly was tamed by Suyesha to a very large extent. Watching them ascend the winding staircase Manish had yelled in delight and had sped in Milind's open arms "Papa ley aaye kiya Preeti ko?" he had questioned in childish anticipation. "Abhi nahin, lekin teri agli birthday sey pehley laa duunga." he had winked at Prachi naughtily ."Promise Papa," he had opened his palm infront of his father "Bilkul maa per gaya hai." Milind had thought while he placed his own on his tiny palm. "Promise!" he had mumured, joining everyone at the table he had exchanged happy glances with Prachi ,Baba had looked up to see his son and daughter in law happy and contented and had smiled, finally his dream of having a complete and contented family had been complete
