Revelation

Part 1
The day had been a brilliant sunny one Suprateek and Sumonto had been playing in the lawn outside when Proteek had suggested they go for an icecream. The children had jumped for joy on this opportunity to fill themselves with their favourite food. Prachi too had willingly consented, it made her happy to see that her son was smiling of late Sumonto had become very difficult to deal with. She tried to explain him that his frenetic outbursts hurt his chachi but he refrained from heeding to her pleas. It seemed to Prachi the child had a mind of his own, it was not his fault either anger and stubbornness ruled his blood he had fire in his genetic build up, afterall he was Milind Mishra's son. Nothing and no one took him for granted he meant what he said and sometimes Prachi feared his flaring temper might lead her new family to find out that he was not Proteek's son afterall. Getting them dressed she sat in the car besides Proteek watching the trees rush past in haste as the car sped on the street. The children chattered in the back seat peeping out of the windows discussing on the flavours they would like to eat once they got there.

At the restaurant Proteek ordered for the ices while Prachi looked at the people filling the place despondently, her heart simply was not at peace today and she wondered why. It was as if something was about to happen something that would be defining she wished she could have spent some time alone, memories assailed her making her soul pine for her soulmate. Proteek studied Prachi minutely he understood something was bothering her but he couldn't pin point what exactly it was, Prachi never shared her grief with anyone in the past five years he had only seen her smile and laugh but not sad. Today as she sat opposite him smiling at her son he realized her eyes told a different tale altogether. Prachi could feel Proteek's eyes on her excusing herself she informed him that she was going to the restroom she felt claustrophobic and needed fresh air.

'I think the deal's done then Mr Khanna' he had placed the file on the table after signing his name on the papers. 'Yes Mr Mishra, I hope this is one investment that'll help my company'. Mr Khanna had extended his hand to Milind which he had shaken warmly 'You'r dealing with Milind Mishra Mr Khanna you shouldn't be worrying about profits they'll come you'll see.' He had assured the old man confidently 'That's the reason I hounded you Mr Mishra despite your vagrant life you've managed to build quite an empire for yourself though I wonder why you never stay in one place for more than a few months.' Mr Khanna had inquired, Milind's reputation far exceeded his presence. The past five years had seen drastic changes in him he was known to be ruthless in business, cold and brash he got what he wanted without bending or changing rules. His competitors referred to him as the 'Impossible Man' because few had the courage to outsmart him. He had opened many companies in different states of India had countless hotels in different locales yet he never stayed back long enough always on a run. The search for truth, his Prachi''. she was alive he knew. Every breath he took reminded him of her and he had vowed to find her even if he died doing that he would not give up not until his last breath. He had left home that fatal night in an attempt to find Prachi but had ended up being hit by a truck days later he had awoken in a hospital abandoned , lonely and numb. Giving up all thoughts of going back home he had left the city arriving in Delhi, it had been a hard struggling year for him but he lived the pain each day his physical wounds took his mind off from the ones that his soul bore. There had been many nights when he had slept under the starry sky devoid of a refuge or shelter skipping meals as he wouldn't have the money to buy any.

Yet his eyes searched the world searched for Prachi keeping a constant and vigil watch that would keep him awake long after the world would sleep. He worked odd jobs finally landing in a company as a driver, his boss was a kind hearted man who had instantly spotted the raw passion in him. Once on a trip to Pune his boss had been accompanied by a friend who had been pestering him to invest in a lucrative hotel project the details being discussed on the long journey Milind had a fair idea of the investment being a sham. Before his boss entered the boardroom the next day Milind had asked him not to put his money in that deal the boss had looked at him apprehensively but Milind had stuck to his ground pointing out the loopholes in the deal. His boss has studied the offer again and was astounded by Milind's sharp acumen days later he had appointed Milind as his secretary. Milind had not looked back then his success had sought him and he had not shunned it taking all that he got never looking back but always on the look out. 'Some things in life are best unexplained Mr Khanna' Milind had replied snapping out of his reverie he had to attend another meeting then have a word with his detective one he had appointed to search for Prachi. This was the fifth he had hired but the results didn't seem promising maybe they didn't search hard enough he would always console himself.

Putting out his still burning cigarette he stood up and picking up the file turned to leave when he saw a woman turn towards the restroom, something about her struck him. The height or maybe the way she walked on an impulse he had followed her. Her long hair flowed down her back, her saree draped sensuously around her svelte form why did she look so familiar to him. Could it be Prachi but what would she do dressed in a Bengali attire in this place he had to find out the truth his steps quickened as he followed her to the end of the corridor. But before he could reach her a small curly haired boy had run up to her 'Maa jaldi aao Papa keh rahey hain jab tak tum aaogi ice cream pighal jayegi.' Milind could not help but stare at the boy in wonder it felt as if he were reliving a dream hadn't Prachi wanted a son for them one who would have looked very much like the boy standing there had he been born.' Tears stung his eyes as he saw the woman bend down to kiss the child's forehead 'Sumonto eik pal key liye bhi mujhey nahin chortey jao main aa rahi huun or masti nahin kerna Suprateek key saath.' Her voice'' how could he forget that voice the one that resounded in his heart night and day. The woman had entered the restroom while the child had made a dash to reach his family colliding with Milind in his haste making him forget the striking resemblance of the woman's voice with Prachi's.

'Sorry uncle ' he had said pushing back his curls bending down Milind had picked him up in his brawny arms kissing him on his forehead where his mother had kissed him a few minutes earlier 'It's ok'. Sumonto had smiled at this man the glint in his eyes was a friendly one 'Naam kiya hai tumhara?' Milind had inquired. 'Sumonto ' he had replied 'Sumonto Dasgupta or tumhara?' Milind had raised his eyebrows in wonder at his courage before saying 'Milind Mishra'. 'Hmm' Sumonto had stared at him 'Tum lagtey to achey ho shararat bhi nahin kertey hogey haina?' and Milind had laughed out his first in five long years. 'Haan ab shararat nahin kerta' he had replied his tone moist 'Maa kehti hai jo bachey masti nahin kertey unko icecream milti hai, aaj main ney masti nahin kii na Suproteek key saath isiliye main icecream khaney aaya huun tum bhi chalo merey saath.' Sumonto had been quick to form a bond with this scruffy looking gentleman who felt very much like his own. 'Per' Milind had tried wheedling 'Chalo na' Sumonto had pleaded and Milind had consented it wouldn't hurt to have an icecream it seemed he had stopped living in the past five years. Meals would taste bland to him he ate simply because he knew he needed to survive to find Prachi the taste or type hardly mattered to him. As they neared the table Sumonto pointed out Milind saw Proteek feeding Suproteek his ice cream. 'Papa yeh mera dost hai icecream khaney aa ya hai' Sumonto had informed his father and Milind had placed him on a chair shaking hands with Proteek. Milind wondered why Sumonto didn't resemble his father while Suproteek did well maybe he had taken after the mother. But Prachi's hind image contrasted with Sumonto's form she too didn't sport curls Proteek had invited Milind to stay for an icecream and Milind had joined them shaking his head to clear his thoughts which it seemed were running wild today.

After splashing cold water on her face countless times Prachi had managed to pacify herself considerably she had no one to blame for her situation than her ownself. Patting her face dry she left the restroom to join her family. At the table Suproteek was acting fussy demanding to be fed by his father while Sumonto sulked at the scene he too wanted to be fed but it seemed Proteek was busy with Suproteek. Milind could not bear to see the child unhappy something about him tugged at his heart. 'Papa busy hain to kiya hua main khila deta huun' he had offered Sumonto but Sumonto continued sulking he sat put with his arms folded across his chest. 'Usko Papa khila saktey hain mujhey nahin?' he had asked in a hurt tone and it cut through Milind like a knife 'Chalo adhi main khila deta huun adhi Papa khila deingey' he tried to strike a deal and Sumonto had accepted it, it was clear to the child that his father was busy with his brother. Milind lifted the spoon bringing it to his lips and as Sumonto licked it clean his heart swelled with happiness. Why did it feel as if this was meant to be how could he form a bond with a stranger child in less than five minutes it struck him as very odd yet deep down in his heart he knew it was the best feeling he had ever had. He smiled at Sumonto who was busy making faces at Suproteek across the table Milind had tousled his curls playfully feeding him the icecream. 'Sumonto meri icecream bhi kha gaye kiya?' a feminine voice had floated and Milind's heart beat had accelerated turning around he stood up to face the owner of this rather familiar voice and stood shocked. There stood his Prachi smiling at her son she probably hadn't seen him her eyes focused on the child. She looked different not like his Prachi at all in that Bengali saree and jewellery but how could his heart be wrong. How could it beat so fervently for some different woman in the same way it beat for Prachi. And was this family hers? Whose children were these? Was that guy Proteek her husband thoughts boggled his mind shattering his remaining senses.

He stared at her astounded when finally she had raised her eyes to meet his. What he saw in them was enough to confirm that she was indeed his Prachi. Her face lost colour as she gaped at him her eyes widened churning a storm of emotions one that threatened to spill on her cheeks that very instant. 'Panchi kitni der laga dii tumney kab sey tumhara intizaar ker rahey they hum' Proteek had told her wiping his hands clean. "Arey yeh Sumonto key naye dost hain Mr Mishra humarey saath ice cream khaney aaye hain' Proteek had informed her unaware of the thoughts and emotions that ran rampant in her mind. 'Mr Mishra yeh meri wife hai Panchi' Proteek had introduced her to him. Something inside Milind had shattered in a million tiny pieces his hopes, desires, dreams had been cruelly assassinated in a split second. He could not believe his Prachi, the Prachi who vowed to cease breathing without him had moved on in life. His fists balled tightly as he tried to keep himself in check his eyes not blinking and not once moving away from Prachi's shriveled face. Her guilt stricken look had him boiling with fury closing his eyes eventually he let out a deep sigh one that touched Prachi's soul. Never had she imagined Milind to reach Kolkatta and more than that find her but she had always known it would happen someday. Her sixth sense had always warned her of this moment and it was truly a moment she had dreaded these past five years. Turning to Proteek Milind had mouthed an excuse bending down to kiss Sumonto he had cast a pained look at Prachi who stood paralysed due to the sudden encounter. 'Kaash aapkey paas waqt hota to hum kuch der or saath bitatey' Proteek had said 'Waqt' Milind had echoed his black eyes resembling pits of hell 'Buhut waqt barbad ker diya hai mainey or sab kuch kho diya' he had muttered under his breath but to Prachi each word felt like molten lead. Catching her eye Milind had continued 'Lekin ab kuch nahin kho'onga, na waqt na jazbaat or naa yaadein. Sab waapis chahiye mujhey eik eik lamha eik eik pal. Sab ka hisaab dena hoga.' Advancing towards Prachi he had threatened her in a low menacing tone his breath hot his manner cruel he had extended is hand towards Prachi. 'Yeh mulaqat yaad raheygi Mrs Dasgupta and I'll make sure you never forget it.' He had smirked at her crushing her hand in his before he flung it away in disgust.

Part 2
Milind had reached his hotel room devastated he had directed the manager not to disturb him ordering wine by large if he had to get through this night the liquor was a necessity. His mind went wild anger, betrayal, pain all had surfaced within him and it confused him to no end. Why had he left her with that guy why did he not just grab her hand and pull her away from him, from the whole wide world. Why did she do this... why. He unscrewed the whiskey bottle and put it to his lips tonight his soul burnt the conflagration being too immense to be doused out by the bitter liquid he gulped. He threw his coat off and kicked off his shoes running his hand through his hair in misery. Was this the reason he had stopped living for since the past five years? Was it worth all this time... all the pain he had bore on his journey to her.... placing the bottle back on his lips he drank the contents letting it scorch his throat as he downed it savagely. "Kyun kiya aisa kyun kiya Prachi?" he wept bitterly, tearsslid down his cheeks making a mockery of the hopes he had retained till now, of the faith he had vested in her.... of never letting go. What a fool he had been thinking she too would've been pining for him the way he had been for her all this time. "Kiya kami reh gayi thii merey pyaar main Prachi?" he questioned her in his mind's eye Smashing the bottle on the wall he howled in agony burying his face in his hands. Flashes of Prachi with Sumonto raced through his mind... that child.... why did it not resemble Proteek? The one question that had been plaguing him had hit with full force and this time he had a hunch on his suspicion being the answer. Wiping his tears he ambled to the phone calling his detective giving him Proteek's name he had ordered him to get him all the details about Proteek. His past his present and his future his family his business everything he wanted to know each and every detail. The moon shone brightly on him as he stood staring at it through the open windows he remembered Prachi and him taking their marriage vows with the moon as witness and closed his eyes in silence the tears that he retained in them now flowed down his cheeks freely. That was a different lifetime and a different world what he had seen here now was not his anymore it was Proteek's. He had wiped the remnants of the salt water from his face the alcohol was getting to him yet sleep evaded him opening another bottle he had drunk the amber liquid in a hope to pass out soon.
Prachi lay quietly on her bed at home Sumonto and Suproteek slept on either side of her. She cast a glance at Sumonto deep in slumber she wondered how he had tracked down his father. Maybe it was always in him to find his daddy out from the crowd the same blood coursed his veins that ran through Milind. A silent tear slipped on her pillow as she stifled a sob how was she ever going to explain Milind the truth. His initial reaction had been what she had dreaded he had misunderstood her, but had she left any room for any other thought. The world knew her as Mrs Proteek Dasgupta and Milind was very much part of the
world his cold eyes hounded her she knew it was the beginning of another end. Milind would find her no matter where she went and how far she ran he'd track her down. Brushing her fingers through Sumonto's curls she had kissed both the children and closed her own eyes knowing very well that sleep was one thing she was not getting tonight. The morning after was a different one for both Milind and Prachi one had his mind set on devastation the other feared another confrontation. It had been a week since Prachi had run into Milind at the restaurant and part of her hoped he would've given up on her now, she was too entangled in her new life to revert back to her old one. Besides she feared if Mallika saw her with Milind again her sacrifices would all go to waste.Milind had been working on a file when his phone had rung out attending the call he had jotted down the details on a piece of paper. Dasgupta Nibash ... he mused aloud it was time he paid his dear wife a visit.

The doorbell had been ringing incessantly Prachi had lowered the flame of the burner and had run to open the front door what met her eyes though was simply unasked for. Proteek stood smiling with Milind behind him the moment her eyes met his she had understood his purpose of arrival. His lips were tightly pressed his eyes flaming as he stepped in after Proteek before trudging on he had stared at her piognantly and that one glance had meltedher, made her realize how much he had suffered over the week. "Panchi dekho to aaj Mr Mishra humarey mehmaan hain, Sumonto ko to bulao uskey to dost hain yeh" he had smiled at Prachi who had found it best to slip away from Milind's accusing gaze. Milind's detective had informed him about Proteek his business and his life. It seemed Prachi had married him as soon as she had reached Kolkatta five years back, Proteek owned a priting press with different branches in different parts of the city. Not only was his paper a daily but also the most read in Kolkatta he seemed to be a very fun loving guy open to suggestions and a very friendly persona. Personally Milind harboured no wrath for Proteek initially he had considered him to be equally at fault as Prachi. But that afternoon as he sat chatting with him in his office he realized Proteek was unaware of Prachi's past what intrigued Milind was the name he used to call Prachi. Milind still had his doubts though the fact that Proteek had resided in Mumbai five years earlier too was mind boggling but he would soon get his information out from Prachi. She was the sole perpetrator in his view he had not expected her to run away from him in the first place and even if she had done it all for his sake why had she started a new life without him. Did she not know it was a crime to marry while the first spouse was still alive, well she'd have to answer to all his questions soon... very soon.
Sumonto had arrived from his room very much elated to see his new friend seated in his house "Tum kab aaye?" he had questioned Milind sitting in his lap. "Bas abhi" Milind had smiled kissing his forehead with love. "Acha yeh batao tumhara favourite game kiya hai?" Milind had asked Sumonto he wanted to know all about the little boy in the shortest time possible."Main to video games khelta huun, maa bahar khelney nahin deti na mujhey" he hadcomplained to Milind it seemed to him Prachi was very possessive of her son. "Hmm tum merey
ghar aa ker khel liya kero I'm sure tumhari maa tab mana nahin kareygi." Milind had consoled him and Sumonto's face had lit up immediately "Sach main ... tumharey ghar main swimming pool hai?" he had inquired enthusiastically, Milind had laughed "Haan hai or tennis court bhi hai" he had further fuelled the child's thirst for outdoor games.Slowly but steadily he wanted to win him over for his final move.Proteek had disappeared probablyto his room to freshen up Milind could see Prachi stand cooking in the kitchen. "Sumonto tumko maa zyaada achi lagti hai ya Papa?" Milind had asked him seriously and Sumonto had been forced to think. He had paused for a few moments before looking at Milind thoughtfully "Maa zyaada achi hai per mujhey har waqt daantti rehti hai..." he had replied in a grave tone. "Hmm main keh duunga ab nahin daanteygi" Milind had promised him and Sumonto had kissed him in happiness that meant he could go out and play with Suprateek in the street... sure would be fun. Jumping off his lap he had run off to find Suproteek to share the good news with him.
Prachi had brought soft drink for Milind her hands shivered as she handed it to him and Milind was quick to notice her fright, it amused him to think that even after five years he held a strong hold over her. As she turned to leave Milind had caught her wrist he could feel her pulse quicken under his steel grip, her eyes flitted from him to the open door continously. Milind had smirked at her revelling in her dilemma pushing her back against the wall he had her pinned to it soon digging his fingers in her wrist. Prachi had gulpedhard she could well understand Milind's anger and was surprised as to how well he had kept it under control all this while. "Milind" she had whispered "Ssshhh" Milind had shushed her placing his finger on her lips "Khabardar jo apni ghatia zabaan sey mera naam liya to" and Prachi had stared at him as if she was seeing him for the first time. She had never expected his anger to grow into hate but had he not been always like this. What was new about him, he was himself yet she was far too deep in a mess. "Main yahaan teri ayyashi ka tamasha dekhney nahin aaya balkeh tujhey bataney aaya huun keh yeh Milind Mishra ab pehley waala Milind nahin raha. Jo tujh sey pyaar kerta tha, tujh per merta tha.... yeh Milind ab
sirf apney liye jeeta hai" Prachi tried to grasp what he said as his powerful hands held her by her arms shaking her thoroughly "Tujhey kiya laga main bhool jaunga tujhey?" he had questioned her, smiling at her painfully he had answered his query himself "Tujhey kaisey bhuul jaata main Prachi... tuu to mera pyaar haina... merey liye to tuu jaan dey sakti thii apni..." he gritted his teeth in misery "isi liye mainey tujhey kabhi apney sey duur nahin samjha, hamesha teri talaash kerta raha." "Milind aap mujhey ghalat samajh rahey hain" Prachi had finally blurted out unable to bear the pain his hands caused her as they held on to her arms burning her flesh with the fire he held within."Sahi keh rahi hai tuu ghalat samajhta aaya main tujhey aaj tak lekin ab nahin..... ab khoney key liye merey paas kuch nahin bacha or paaney laiq main terey liye kuch nahin chorunga Prachi." Prachi had gasped aghast at his revelation "Sab kuch jo tuuney mujh sey cheena hai Prachi woh mujhey waapis chahiye mera waqt, mera kal, merey sapney, yahaan tak keh mera bacha bhi." The last three words had Prachi trembling to the core how did he know about Sumonto, watching her face go
deathly pale he had smiled sarcastically. "Tujhey kiya laga tuu batayegi nahin to mujhey pata nahin chaleyga woh mera beta hai... mera khoon hai.... mera ansh hai... or ab woh merey saath raheyga.. tujh sey buhut duur." Prachi was devastated he would take her reason to live away from her "Milind aap sach nahin jaantey" she had pleaded to him "Milind Sumonto ko mujh sey alag mat kijiye wohi to meri zindagi ka sahara hai" she had begged him crying hysterically."Terey jeeney key liye or buhut kuch hai Prachi lekin merey jeeney key liye ab mera beta buhut zaruri hai. Or ussey main tujh sey leykar rahunga... yeh vaada hai mera" Pushing her away from him he strode out of the room exiting her house leaving Prachi to sob alone.
Part 3
Prachi had quickly wiped her tears lest anyone saw her that way she was in no position to explain her sorrow or sentiments to anyone, sprinting up to the children's room she saw Sumonto busy playing his favourite game. She had run upto him enveloping him in a loving embrace sobbing convulsively. The child seemed to be over whelmed by her gesture but did not move away he realized his mother needed him and it hurt his little heart to see her cry. He could not bear her tears wiping them away with his fingers he looked at her questioningly "Kiya hua maa? Kyun ro rahi ho? Chachi ney kuch bola kiya?" he had inquired with concern his love and care for her melted Prachi's heart instantly. How could she let Milind take him away from her, he was the reason she had stopped herself from suiciding the instant she had left Milind. He was the reason she breathed today, the reason she had spent all this time away from her family residing amongst strangers trying to accept this place as her home. But the truth was home was where her Milind resided back in Bombay in Shah mansion. Though she knew it's doors were closed to her, she herself had closed them for herself retreating her steps was simply out of question now. Kissing him on his cheek she had left Sumonto very much bewildered by her actions wiping away traces of any tears on her own face she had asked Proteek about Milind. Proteek unaware of the history she shared with Milind informed him how Milind wanted to place several advertisements in his paper for the launch of his new hotel at Kolkatta handing her Milind's business card in the process.
After serving lunch to the family Prachi had excused herself on the pretext of going to the mandir quickly exiting the house. She had to find Milind and tell him the truth before he created havoc in her life, giving up Sumonto was something she could not do at any cost. Milind sat behind the glass table at his office in one of the posh localities of Kolkatta little had he realized stepping on this soil this was the place that would turn his world around. He awaited Prachi, he knew she would come, she had to. What he had threatened to do was fatal for her and he understood she would not give up without a fight not that he cared he was the biological father of the child and had full right on him. When his detective had informed him on Sumonto being born prematurely his brain had worked overtime not only did the child not resemble his step father he was also born at seven months. This could only prove that Prachi was infact carrying their baby when she left him and had opted for that Proteek instead of him. Nothing he did pacified his anger, whenever he thought about the time he had spent away from his child infuriated him. How could Prachi do this to him.... what had he done to deserve this indifference from her? Had he not loved her enough , held her in high esteem he was even ready to lay his life for her.... had she asked.
His phone had buzzed then "Sir there's a certain Mrs Dasgupta, she says she needs to speak to you it's urgent" his secretary had informed him. "Send her in" he had spoken in the mouthpiece before cutting the call. The door had opened and Prachi had walked in her eyes were puffy and he knew she had been crying a part of him had wanted to kiss those swollen eyelids cursing himself for even thinking on those lines Milind hd forced himself to remember the hard times he had been through while searching for that ungrateful woman. "Milind main aap sey baat kerney aayi huun." she had started when he cut her acridly "Mrs Dasgupta aap hii ka to intizaar tha mujhey......" he had glowered at her mocking her existence standing up from his seat he walked over to where she stood. "To kahiye Mrs Dasgupta kaisey aana hua?" he had asked her in a biting tone. Prachi's eyes had lowered to the ground she had not expected him to act that way but she knew he was not to blame. "Aap Kolkatta main kiya ker rahey hain?" Prachi had tried to make small talk "Kyun terey baap ka hai Kolkatta ya terey naye pati ka jo main yahaan nahin aa sakta?" he had retorted rudely. Seeing this not a feasible idea Prachi had decided to come to the point "Milind aap Sumonto ko mujh sey judaa nahin ker saktey" she had pleaded to him casting a deep look at her he had ignored her lighting his cigarette "Main kiya ker sakta huun or kiya nahin tujhey bataney ki zarurat nahin.' taking a deep puff he had exhaled the smoke in her face "Sumonto mera beta hai mera haq hai us per. Paanch saal tak tuu ney usse mujh sey duur rakha ab paanch saal to kiya paanch janmon main, main tujhey uskey saath nahin rehney duunga." he had puffed on his cigarette again.Prachi had started crying openly she knew he meant every word and he would certainly take her son away from him. "Aap kyun ussey mujh sey cheena chahtey hain sab kuch to hai aapkey paas. Poora parivar hai, Mallika hai phir aapko merey betey ki kiya zarurat hai."
Crumpling the burning cigarette in his palm ignoring the searing pain that it had caused Milind had shot her a bloody look before seizing her by her arms "Kiya bakwwaas kii tuu ney... sab kuch hai merey paas....Bata kiya chora tuuney merey paas. Arey sab kuch cheen liya mujh sey mera parivaar, mera sapna yahaan tak keh meri aulad tak cheen lii yeh tak nahin bataya keh main baap banney waala huun." he screamed in agony his eyes spitting fire and his tongue venom. Prachi stared at him in shock what did he mean she had taken everything away she had left him because his life depended on it. "Lekin aap to Mallika key saath " Prachi had asked him in confusion "Arey bhaad main gayi Mallika tujhey kiya laga main us do takey kii aurat key saath rahunga?" He jerked her free breathing deeply to control his anger "Teri tarah nahin huun na main Prachi keh eik sey dil bhar gaya to duusrey ko apna liya." Prachi felt as if she had been slapped hard she couldn't believe he thought so low of her did he not trust her to maintain the purity of their marraige. "Socha bhi kaisey tuuney keh main Mallika ka ho jaunga..... sab kuch chor diya mainey terey liye Prachi. Apney Baba ko apney parivaar ko, sirf tujhey dhundney key liye. Paanch saal tak bhatakta raha main kuch nahin soch kuch nahin samjha TEREY ILAWA" he hollered. "Din raat eik ker dii teri talaash main is liye keh mujhey yaqeen tha keh tuu zinda hai arey meri saansein chal rahi hain matlab keh tuu saans ley rahi hogi." he had paused his eyes moist as tears rolled down them, tears of pain sorrow and unsurmountable affliction.
Gripping her jaw in his hand he had forced her to look at him "Kiya bola tha tuuney hum saari umer eik saath bitaiengey... kahaan gaye woh vaadey jo tuuney mujh sey kiye they....bol". Prachi whimpered in his strong hold she knew how hard it was for him to keep a check on his fury at that moment if he hadn't loved her from the very core of his being he would definitely have killed her on the spot. "Milind Mallika ney aapko jail..." she tried to explain "Tujhey uss Mallika ki dhamkiyon per yaqeen tha merey pyaar per nahin?' he had questioned her letting go of her "Main eik eik pal teri yaad main guzarta raha or tujhey laga keh main Mallika key saath kitni ghatia soch hai teri Prachi." he had turned away his face in disgust leaving her aghast. Did that mean Milind had never returned to Mallika all these five years he had been seeking her..... fresh tears ran down her cheeks and all this while she thought he would have moved on in life how could she have even thought of him that way.
Her soul burnt in guilt why had she never thought on these lines had she not witnessed him shun Mallika away the day she had left him? Then why had she not stopped to fight back but Mallika had promised to put him behind bars and that was something she could have never wanted for Milind. She loved him far too much to see him suffer but had he not suffered then too. She stood stumped unable to find words to console him, tell him that she been through the same hell that he had been. But had it been the same for them both he had suffered all alone while she had friends to take her mind of her past Proteek and his family had been constant support through her hard times. She knew anything she said or did would be misunderstood by him since he was not in a positive frame of mind biting her lip she decided to wait for his next move. She saw him pace the office like a tiger not being able to pacify his wounded heart finally when the silence hung like a thick curtain between them he had produced a file from his bag "Sign these" he had ordered her throwing the file infront of her. "Yeh kiya hai?" she had questioned him picking it up she opened it to read the papers it held. What she read was beyond belief he wanted her to sign papers claiming him the sole guardian and parent of Sumonto. Henceforth she would hold no claim on him neither would she be allowed to meet him or have anything to do with him in future. Throwing the file away she had marched upto him "Kiya samajhtey hain aap, aap kaheingey or main apna beta aapko dey duungi.... aisa kabhi nahin hoga. Sumonto humara beta hai." "Humara nahin sirf or sirf mera.... tujh jaisi maa key saaye main palney sey behter hai merey beta bina maa key hii rahey" he had seethed raising his index finger to her face. "Aisa kabhi nahin hoga Milind Sumonto meri jaan hai uskey bina main jee nahin sakti" she was weeping again but her tears failed to move Milind this time. "To phir mar jaa Prachi" he had said quietly before turning away from her "Please Milind aisa mat kijiye" she had slumped to the floor folding her hands she begged him to reconsider. "Terey paas chaubees ghantey hain Prachi ya to tuu in papers per sign ker dey ya phir terey us pati kii vaat laga duunga main. Jis press sey tera ghar chalta hai usey jala duunga, eik eik ker key woh sab kuch cheen luunga main jo tera hai. Mujhey mera beta chahiye har haal main, har qeemat per phir uskey liye chahey duniya ko hii kyun na jalana parey mujhey"..... looking at her straight in the eye he had lit another cigarette "Jala duunga!"
Part 4
Dasgupta Nibash was filled with guests it was a very auspicious moment for the family. Proteek's paper 'Kolkotta Herald' had been awarded the 'Newspaper of the year' award. He was simply elated and had arranged a grand party to honour his late father's dreams, guests had started pouring in and soon Prachi could hear her name being chanted by her mother in law. "Panchi beta caterers ko phone ker diya" she had inquired flabbergasted her mother in law became tensed during such situations quite easily. Now too she ran helter skelter from one end of the mansion to the other "Maa aap rehney dijiye main ker lungi" Prachi had pacified her smiling at her. Proteek had brought both the children downstairs who seemed unhappy about being forced to attend a boring party nonetheless they followed their father in obedience whispering plans to escape the moment they found a perfect opportunity to do so. Having reminded the caterers about the venue Prachi had clicked the phone shut, standing in a remote corner of the hall Tanushree burnt in agony it hurt her to think that ever since Panchi's arrival her mother in law had formed a strong bond with her. She felt useless and discarded like an antique jewellery item adorned on special occasions, she fumed watching her husband recite couplets to strangers in perfect bliss while Proteek reaped accolades from well wishers. Milind had entered the garlanded doorway with a heavy heart he hated parties and was not looking forward to this one either but he simply could not refuse when Proteek had invited him, attending the party meant spending time with his son. Weaving his way through the crowd he managed to find Proteek deep in conversation with Prachi, handing Proteek the bouquet he had brought he had congratulated him firmly shaking hands with him. "Mujhey khushi hai keh aap aaye Mr Mishra" Proteek had commented in happiness. "Kaisey nahin aata Mr Dasgupta ,insaan wahin khincha chala jaata hai jahaan uska dil hota hai uski aatma basti hai.... Kyun Mrs Dasgupta theek keh raha huun na main" he had questioned her sarcastically his lips smiling while his eyes burnt holes in her soul. Prachi had been surprised to see Milind there she wondered why he had attended the party in the first place as far as she recalled he hated parties but then that was another time he had changed over the past five years. She stared at him in bewilderment before excusing herself altogether she just couldn?t bear his accusing gaze on her anymore it hurt her to think that he considered her wrong and would not listen to her explanation.

Sumonto and Suproteek had ascended the stairs to their room pulling out their water pistols they had a ball of a time drenching themselves with it. Tired of trying to talk sense in her husband Tanushree had given up hope and had decided to spend some time in her room as she reached the top step she collided with Sumonto who was attempting to escape Suproteek's well aimed shots. The collision had her startled and in a fit of fury she had thrown away Sumonto's water pistol breaking it in the process returning back to the party in a feisty mood. Once there though her anger her subsided when Mrs Khanna had marveled at her necklace design and her new matching saree. Sumonto felt mad and angry his little brain worked overtime vowing revenge from his Kaki maa what did she think of herself he'd make her pay for it. Stealing a pair of scissors he tiptoed his way to a table near Tanushree hiding beneath the overlay he managed to snip a large horrible cut in her new saree's pallu and then calmly returned his attention to the icecream he held as a reward for his hard work. The party was in full swing Milind was trying to make small talk with people he had identified from his business circle. Each pore in his body longed to set the house ablaze he hated everything there even Prachi who seemed to be avoiding him successfully his eyes searched his son who it seemed had magically disappeared. Frustrated he had turned to face the staircase in a hope to locate his son when he heard voices emanating from the hall. "Batao kyun kiya yeh" Tanushree screeched and then he had heard the sound of a tight slap being dealt out to someone. Tearing through the assembled people he stood shocked to see his own son being the receiver of that rather poignant slap. He balled his fists in fury and before Tanushree could deal another one of her slaps to Sumonto Milind was on her like a tiger on a deer. Catching her raised arm in his fist he had glared at her through glowing eyes "How dare you" he seethed "Sharam nahin aati bachey per haath uthatey huey" he had questioned her furiously releasing her arm with a defining jerk. "Aap kon hotey hain kuch bolney waaley" Tanushree had asked him shamelessly she felt it rather odd for Milind to react so strongly when the child's parents themselves stood mutely silent witnesses to the entire ordeal.

"Yeh mera beta hai. Matlab betey jaisa hai or main bardaasht nahin kerunga keh kisi bhi masoom bachey per zulm kiya jaye." Milind had answered through gritted teeth. He felt like slapping Tanushree hard so that she too may feel the pain his son had just dealt with. Consequently Prachi felt that if Milind engaged in further conversation with Tanushree he might end up spilling all the beans. She had cut in then "Sumonto chalo merey saath" she had ordered the child but it had fallen on deaf ears since Sumonto was in no mood to listen to one of her lectures on the contrary Somonto held Milind's hand and stared up at him questioningly. Milind knew what his son desired sweeping him in his arms Milind had exited the hallway leaving a rather desperate and stunned Prachi calling after them but Milind did not stop. His son was hurt and it was all because of that pathetic fake family he was living with he cursed Prachi for putting them all through this misery. Placing him in the seat next to his Milind had driven off in the sultry dark night not turning back once to glance at Prachi who he knew followed them close behind. "Sumonto ... Sumonto ruk jao" she screamed but her voice was drowned in the roar of the engine as it came to life leaving behind a cloud of dust and smoke, defeated and lost Prachi had cried at her doomed fate in the deserted lawn.

The party inside had resumed though the scene had risen many questions especially in Tanushree's heart she failed t understand Milind?s odd behaviour and dialogues wondering what could have triggered such an act. Prachi could not bear to stand in the party any longer she made her way to her bedroom locking it behind her before falling on the bed weeping pitifully. She had wanted them all to lead their lives in peace and it had turned out to be the exact opposite of what she had thought. Not only had Milind spent five fruitless years searching for her but also he had turned stone hearted in the process even her tears failed to move him now. She pored over the deal he had offered her would he really go to the extent of burning Proteek's press she wondered. It struck to her that he had performed a similar feat in the past setting Neev's company ablaze in a fit of jealousy, yes he most definitely would destroy Proteek and she could not let that happen at any cost. Milind had taken Sumonto home with him he had consoled the young boy and was proud that Sumonto did not deny the charge rather accepting to snipping off his Kaki maa's saree. But that did not make it acceptable and Milind had explained to him that what he had done was wrong Sumonto had agreed it being his mistake thoroughly taken in with Milind's kind words he was so unlike his mother who used to hold him responsible for all actions not listening to his explanations at all. Making him undress Milind had got him changed in a night dress ever since he had known of his son's existence he had started shopping for him in hope of being able to give it all to him one day. Milind had then led him to a room he had specially decorated for Sumonto it had a huge collection of toys, video games and art material. Sumonto was overjoyed and it was a happy two hours that they had spent together playing different games time flew by and before they knew his servant had informed Milind of dinner being served. Dinner was another surprise galore as there was ice cream on the menu Milind had bought a couple of packs on the way home and now both delved in the sinful act of eating it to their heart's content. That night as Sumonto lay beside him on his bed Milind knew his decision to take him away from Prachi was a justified one he would not let anyone play with his son?s sentiments. "Thank you dost tum ney mujhey Kaki maa sey bachaya main maa sey buhut naraaz huun kabhi meri baat nahin sunti" he had complained to Milind. Seeing him in a persuasive mood Milind had found it to be the right time "Agar main tumko hamesha key liye yahaan sey ley jaun to Sumonto" he had inquired gently raking his heavy hand through his son's curls.

"Matlab" Sumonto had asked wide eyed "Matlab yeh kah agar main tujhey aisi jagah ley jaun jahaan tujhey koi maareyga nahin, koi daanteyga bhi nahin or tuu sirf merey saath rahega?.? Milind had explained patiently. "Matlab Kaki maa sey duur or Maa sey bhi duur" he had asked as an afterthought "Haan Maa sey bhi duur" Milind had assented honestly. "To phir nahin Maa sey duur nahin jaunga main" he had shaken his head in the negative. Milinds heart had sunk low how could he ever get Prachi to stay with them besides he didn?t want her to be a part of their lives now. "Hmm ... agar Ma milney aa jaya karey tujhsey to, baaqi time tuu merey saath rehna apney toys sey khelna, swimming bhi kerna" "Swimming" Sumonto's eyes shone with excitement "Or Maa aayegi mujh sey milney" he had inquired as if debating on his decision... "Haan Maa aayegi? maybe in another lifetime or so Milind had thought smiling at him. "Theek hai phir main rahunga aapkey saath" he had finally given in "Promise" Milind had asked "Arey baba Promise!" Sumonto had confirmed before snuggling upto Milind and soon he was fast asleep. Milind had been waiting for this his son's consent as he had not wanted to force the child into doing anything but now that he had assented it shouldn't be a problem. Patting him gently Milind could feel Sumonto breathe against and that one feeling was raw and priceless he had to move fast. Calling up his secretary he had asked him to book tickets to Bombay, Prachi could rot in Kolkotta for all he cared he was leaving with his son but not before he had her sign those papers.
Part 5
Prachi had fretted the whole night shedding tears in silence she had asked Proteek to fetch Sumonto from Milind's place but Proteek had no clue of Milind's residence though he had called Milind who had assured to take care of Sumonto for the night. Prachi had tried talking to Sumonto but he was too mad at her and refused conversing which had further saddened Prachi. She could not believe her own son had shunned her that too for his father whom he hardly knew but then that was blood calling. As the sun dawned in the horizon Prachi had risen up completing her chores she patiently awaited Proteek to take her to Milind's office but it seemed Proteek had some urgent business to attend to. Frustrated Prachi had informed him of going to Milind's office alone to fetch Sumonto twenty minutes later she paced the reception at his office tirelessly. Milind was busy in a conference and she'd have to wait two hours before she could have a word with him. From his swivel armchair in the empty boardroom Milind had watched her pace the entire length of the corridor impatiently he had a clear view of her from behind the blackened glass walls of the room. He was loving it somewhere something inside him felt very much at peace..... "Andaaza hoga tumko Prachi intizaar kiya hota hai" he had thought mercilessly exiting the back door because try as he would he could not watch her in that position for long. Tired and exhausted Prachi had seated herself on the plush leather couches in the hallway she dropped her head in her palms as tears ran freely on her cheeks she understood Milind was playing games with her she knew him too well to rule out every action of his. She wondered if there even was a board meeting being held just as she was about to enter the room Milind had exited it himself. Casting a stray look at her he had headed for his office not wanting to create a scene Prachi had followed him there once inside she had shut the door behind her. "Milind Sumonto kahaan hai?" she had inquired without any preliminaries. He looked at her in surprise before arching his eyebrows in question "Knock kerna sikhaya nahin kisi ney tujhey? Bina meri ijazat merey office main qadam kaisey rakha tuuney?" he had asked in a stinging tone. Prachi ignored his remarks "Mujhey mera beta chahiye Milind bataiye kahaan hai woh?" she could not help but feel her worst fears turning true. What if Milind had already sent Sumonto somewhere far from her, no she shook her head he could not be that heartless true he hated her but he could not stoop so low. Milind studied her face minutely he had her exactly where he wanted frightened and very much gullible. There was a knock on the door and his secretary had entered "Sir aapki Bombay ki tickets" he had handed them to Milind. "Sumonto ki ticket deydi Sunil ko?" Milind had inquired and Mr Khanna had replied as rehearsed "Sir woh bas thori hii der main puhunch jayeingey" hmm Milind had mused thoughtfully before waving him away. Milind had then called up someone "Sunil dekho safar key doraan merey betey ko koi takleef nahin honi chahiye" he had said eyeing Prachi all throughout. Prachi had turned deathly pale had Milind sent Sumonto to Bombay alone...... she felt as if her heart would stop beating for a moment Milind wondered if she would collapse before reverting his eyes to the glass table top, he could not pity her now she had made him suffer too long and too much it was payback time.
Prachi had fallen to the floor in shock she sat dazed her child had been taken away from her that too by the man she loved the most but was he to blame for his hatred she had caused him to act that way become ruthless and harsh. She hid her face in her palms and sobbed hysterically "Sumonto" she whimpered helplessly. Consequently she realized Milind was at fault too he had never let her explain her side of the story to him she had cast a pained look at him before getting up to her feet determinedly. "Milind Sumonto kahaan hain bataiye warna main...." "Warna kiya ker leygi Prachi" Milind had mocked her placing his feet on the glass table top "Apney uss pati ko bulayegi.... ya phir police ko..... bacha kidnap kerney key ilzaam main mujhey ander kerwayegi?" he had laughed a long hollow laugh dropping his feet to the floor he stood facing her. "Kuch nahin ker sakti tuu Prachi... kuch nahin agar bhagvaan ko bhi ley aayegi to nahin duunga tujhey mera beta. Koi haq nahin tha tujhey ussey mujh sey duur rakhne ka. Or waisey bhi uska baap huun main duniya ki koi adalat or koi qanoon usey mujh sey duur nahin ker sakta" he had informed her acidly. Prachi could see there was no way out "Please Milind mujhey Sumonto lauta dijiye....main uskey bina jee nahin sakti Milind" she had sobbed painfully holding on to his arm...... Milind had stared at her long and hard "Kabhi tuu yeh merey liye bhi kaha kerti thi Prachi.... lekin dekh aaj bhi to tuu jee rahi hai merey bina....... iska matlab tuu jhooti hai, dhokeybaaz hai. Agar tuu merey bina jee sakti hai to Sumonto key bina bhi jee leygi" he had said quietly his steel gaze boring in her. Prachi had stared at him through glassed eyes "Milind aap kitna badal gaye hain" she had whispered in a defeated tone. "Mera to sirf andaaz badla hai Prachi tuu ney to apna aap hi badal liya, zindagi badal lii, pyaar badal liyaa yahaan tak keh jeeney kii wajah bhi badal lii" and had turned his face away to hide the tears that threatened to weaken him. He could not let her see him vulnerable or else she would play him again make a fool out of him. Shrugging his arm free of her hold he had walked to the cabinet bringing out the file he handed it to her "Sign it Prachi" he had sneered mercilessly. Prachi had peered at him through wet eyes "Please Milind please mujhey maaf ker dijiye.... hum saath milker"...... she had tried compromising. "Saath?" Milind had stared at her in amazement "Saath milker kiya kareingey Prachi?" he had questioned her in wonder. "Sumonto ko paaleyngey usey barhta hua dekheingey ............... kahaan ..... terey naye ghar main?" and Prachi had felt as if she'd been punched hard in the stomach ofcourse the entire world considered her Proteek's wife. " Prachi I said sign them warna vaada kerta huun Sumonto ki shakal tak nahin dikhaunga kabhi tujhey" he had threatened her. But Prachi had other thoughts in mind he must know the truth "Milind aisa nahin" she had tried to explain to him when there was a knock on the door again and Proteek had walked in smiling.
"Kaisey hain Mr Mishra waisey humara beta aapkey paas hai lauta dijiye iski Maa kab sey pareshan hai" he had joked with Milind circling his arm around Prachi's shoulder. Milind had felt as if someone had thrown him in an inferno his eyes narrowed as he watched Prachi stand mutely her eyes pleading her lips sealed. It cut him to see someone else touch Prachi and his heart burnt at the sight giving Prachi a stone cold look he had turned around walking to the table he picked up the glass of water and gulped all of it in a go. Meanwhile Prachi looked on scared she knew the effect Proteek's actions were having on Milind releasing herself from Proteek's hold she had stepped a few feet away she could see how Milind's hand shook with rage as it closed around the french tumbler. Suddenly the silence was cut with a shattering sound it appeared Milind had crushed the glass in his hand, Prachi gaped in horror as blood trickled down the sides of his fist throwing the tumbler away he strode to the large windows pulling the blinds open. There beside the pool laughing his head off at some joke sat Sumonto with Sunil filling himself with icecream "Sumont" Prachi had exclaimed in relief so Milind was just frightening her he hadn't sent Sumonto away afterall.
Proteek had left for the pool area leaving them both alone again "Milind aapka haath" Prachi had gasped startled to see the blood flow in a steady stream she tried to touch it when he had pushed her away angrily. "Chot detey waqt khayal nahin aaya keh dard kitna hoga?" he had inquired the pain in his voice was evident his suffering has found words "Milind mainey to sirf aapki bhalai" she had tried explaining. Proteek had stuck his head in the door then "Prachi chal nahin raheen tum?" he had inquired and she had shook her head assenting as he disappeared around the corner Milind had asked Prachi to leave. "Jaa Prachi tera pati tujhey bula raha hai or waisey bhi merey zakhmon ko ab teri dawa ki zarurat nahin" saying so he sauntered out in the corridor leaving a teary Prachi behind. At the pool side Sumonto had rushed to greet his father "Papa acha ha aap aa gaye" Sumonto had yelled from across racing down the side. For a moment Milind had thought Sumonto had meant him he had smiled in wonder opening his arms to hug the child but Sumonto ran past him into Proteek's open arms. "Kitni der laga dii papa main kab sey intizaar ker raha tha aapka" he had complained lovingly kissing him on the cheek. The light in Milind's eyes had gone out and now they were cold and sad standing in the distance Prachi had witnessed it all and for the first time she had realized how Milind actually felt. Milind had quickly put down his hands his expressions changing swiftly but not before both Sumonto and Proteek had seen his wound. "Arey uncle aapkey haath sey to khoon nikal raha hai." he had said thoroughly vexed "Dawai laga lo na.... dard nahin ho raha aapko?" he had again questioned evidently disturbed by Milind's pain. "Nahin" Milind had smiled when Sunil had walked upto them. "Sir Sumonto sey puchiye kitna enjoy kiya humney raastey main.." he too had fallen in love with the child and had a good time with him during their journey from Milind's home to his office. It so haapened that Milind had bought a home far from the office because the view there was spectacular and since it was a secluded area Milind had fallen in love with the peace quite in contrast with the turmoil in his heart also the serenity of the surrounding greens and breathtaking beauty of the area had him spell bounded. "Uncle aap humko aaj funfair ley jaaiengey?" Sumonto had asked Milind happily "Haan" Milind had replied causing Sumonto's grin to widen. "Tickets" he had said extending his hand and Sunil had handed him the tickets to the fair which he had given to Proteek "I think aapko jaana chahiye apni family key saath" saying so he had left before anyone could say anything. Watching him leave Prachi had felt a pang of guilt in her heart it should've been Milind going to the fair with Sumonto not Proteek and she would make sure that was exactly the way it happened.
Part 6
Prachi paced the room in misery how could she have been so ignorant of the pain Milind must've gone through in the past five years she was a fool to think he'd have moved on in life with Mallika. Her guilt ate her up inside somehow she had to make him meet Sumonto today maybe some part of her would be at peace then though total peace was something she knew she would never be able to achieve again ever. The phone had rung then it was Proteek he would be taking Suproteek to the dentist that evening it seemed he had developed a tooth ache that morning. Perfect Prachi had thought thinking of checking on her son he'd need a bit of convincing to go to the fair without his brother. Prachi found him busy cooking a plan to rob Kakimaa of her favourite dosa he was too naughty, naughtier than Prachi had ever imagined she realized now what a difficult time Baba must've gone through raising Milind on his own. "Sumo hum aaj funfair jayeingey tayyar nahin hona?" she had inquired of him, "Maa Suproteek key to daant main dard hai woh kaisey jaeiyega?" he had counterquestioned her. "Woh nahin jayega humarey saath sirf tum or main jayeingey" she had informed him.... "Akeley Mumma!" he had inquired his eyes wide with apprehension... it felt odd for him to leave not only his father but also brother behind and go on an outing with his mother alone. "Akeley nahin jayeingey tumharey friend hongey na humarey saath..." she had smiled at him. "Milind uncle?" he had confirmed and when Prachi nodded her head in assent his eyes had lit up "Yeahhhhhhh!!!!!" he screamed in pleasure capering around the room he surely had formed a firm bond with Milind.
Once outside the house Prachi had wasted no time in making a beeline for Milind's office but unfortunately he was not to be found there, it seemed he hadn't been feeling too well that morning and had gone home early. Sumonto sulked while Prachi pondered on the decision of taking Sumonto with her to Milind's place. Finally her heart had the final say she gave the directions to Milind's house to the driver before settling in the back seat closing her eyes it was going to be a long journey home. After two hours the car had come to a halt outside the iron gates of Milind's silent mansion, it was monumental but sadly looked devoid of any signs of life even the trees stood still in the orange rays of the setting sun. The guard had let her through seeing Sumonto with her and soon she stood inside the house a servant informed her of Milind's ill health he had ben feverish lately and today had a temperature, the doctor had refused to attend a patient on the outskirts of the city and thus Milind suffered in solitude. Prachi felt as if someone had ripped her heart apart she bounded the steps upto Milind's room followed by Sumonto there lying on the bed breathing raggedly was Milind. His cut hand dangled loosely by his side a small pool of blood had formed beneath it on the floor his attempts at bandaging it himself obviously had turned to be fruitless. "Milind!" Prachi had gasped in horror quickly rushing to his side. He was in deep stupor she felt his forehead which burnt like he was on fire screaming for the servant Prachi had chided him for not taking care of Milind. Asking him to get the bandage she had proceeded to bandage his wounds himself. She had then called the Dasgupta's family doctor up informing him of Milind's condition he had agreed to come and in an hour was at Milind's side. Milind had contracted viral fever and the wound had aggravated his condition, the doctor had studied it minutely treating it with medication that had caused Milind to moan in pain. The doctor had given him a shot for the fever asking Prachi to follow up with a cold compress if the fever did not subside then too. Sumonto had been scared when he had seen blood drip from Milind's hand and the servant had taken him away trying to lure him with ice cream and his toys in the nursery. The child had been reluctant to leave but Prachi had asked him to go with the old man considering it best for him to stay away since he would only be more worried on seeing his friend that way.
The evening had given way to night Milind's fever had not come down Prachi was at her wits end she was caught in a dilemma. She had tried calling Proteek countless times but the network was down she had sent the car home then instructing the driver to tell Proteek about her whereabouts and to inform him that she was fine. She had checked on Sumonto too having made him eat dinner she had put him to bed and had then returned by Milind's side who seemed oblivious of the world around him. Taking the cold compress she had placed it on his burning forehead when he had drowsily opened his eyes he stared at her for a few minutes before pushing her hand away from him angrily.... "Tuu yahan kiya ker rahi hai?" he had asked hotly trying to get up his head felt as if it would explode he put his hands to his temples pressing them viciously . "Milind aapki tabiyat" Prachi had started. "Bhaad main gayi meri tabiyat tuu yahaan kiya ker rahi hai?" he had sneered throwing the covers off him he stood up on his feet swaying dangerously when Prachi had leapt forward to hold him. "Mat choo mujhey" he had screamed in agony "Mat choo mujhey..... nafrat hai mujhey tujh sey teri aahat sey, teri parchai sey us har cheez sey jo tujh sey juri hai" he had stabilized himself clutching the bedpost he winced in pain as his wounded hand closed in on the wood. "Milind aap chahey mujh sey nafrat kertey rahein, aapko haq hai lekin aap apney aap ko itni takleef dein main aapko iss ki ijazat nahin duungi" Prachi had shouted. "Kiya samajhtey hain aap apneyap ko dukhi ker key aap buhut acha kaam ker rahey hain... yeh mujhey manzoor nahin" she had cried out in equal pain. "Haan yeh to bhuul gaya tha main teri ijazat leni hoti hai na mujhey har kaam key liye jiyun teri marzi sey marun tri marzi sey, tujhey manzoor ho to terey saath rahun or namanzur to tuu beech raastey chor dey mujhey" he had stated in a wet voice. Staring at her his eyes had welled up and he had turned his face away from her he was weakest then and he hated himself for giving in to his emotions, he hated her for ruining him and most of all he hated the fact that she was no longer his. "Milind beth jaiye please aapko araam ki zarurat hai" Prachi had sobbed touching him gently. Milind had swiped his sleeve across his eyes rubbing them dry "Mujhey teri zarurat nahin tuu jaa yahaan sey terey pati ko terey yahaan honey ki khabar nahin honi chahiye" he had stated matter of factly. He didn't want Proteek thinking bad of her no matter what she had done to him he did not want to ruin her life he had just wanted a right over his son but seeing his attachment with Proteek that morning he had realized it would be cruel to separate the child from the family he knew and believed to be his own.
"Milind aap sach nahin jaantey mujhey bataney to dijiye" she had implored but Milind had fallen to the floor by then. "MILIND!!!" Prachi had screamed running to his side "Milind aapko kuch nahin hoga, main aapko kuch nahin honey duungi" she had called the servant and had hauled Milind on the bed placing a cold compress on his head every now and then. The fever had broken near dawn and Prachi had passed the night miserably crying over Milind's sad state. "Prachi" he would call every now and then "Kyun kiya aisa....kyun kiya?" he would ask even though his fever had rendered him unconscious his subconscious did not let him let him fall in oblivion again. Prachi sat holding his wounded hand the entire night weeping silently she was to blame for it all.... all of it how could she ever ask for forgiveness. As he slipped in peaceful slumber Prachi had allowed her eyes to drop close resting against his chest she too had fallen asleep. Proteek had passed a fitful night he had not come to know about Prachi's disappearance till late that evening and by the time he had known it was already night time. Suproteek had been treated by the dentist and did not feel any better it was useless entrusting him to Tanushree as his mother was out of town and so Proteek had stayed behind. Atleast Prachi was with Milind she'd be safe with him though why did she have to go there in the first place was beyond Proteek, maybe on the way back from the fair they must've decided to drop home first he had consoled himself with lame excuses. Come morning he had left a sleeping Suproteek to collect Prachi and Sumonto when he reached there he was ushered in by the servant on reaching Milind's bedroom he was shell shocked to see Prachi sleeping peacefully besides Milind her head resting on his bare chest while his arm was draped around her. "Prachi" Proteek had whispered was Milind the past she vowed never to forget a sudden revolutionary thought had flashed through his mind.
Part 7
Proteek stood shocked in silence he could see Prachi had been crying evident from her tear stained cheeks and Milind was in no better condition himself. He lay on the bed a ragged form lost in slumber, "Prachi" Proteek had called out to her. Yet she did not move her body refused to recognize any other sound than the one which emitted from underneath her the incessant thudding of a loving heart. Casting a long look at them both Proteek had left for downstairs somehow in his heart he knew he was the one, the one Prachi had thought and sought for eons. He had never seen her this peaceful in all the five years of his association with her and in that moment when he stood overlooking the mango trees lining the cobbled driveway he had made up his mind to make that serenity a part of Prachi's life forever. "Bitiya" Kaka had called out to her the third time when he saw her open her eyes groggily. "Milind" Prachi had whispered but realization dawned that it was the servant who vied for her attention watching her stir he had informed her about Proteek in hushed tones. Making Milind comfortable by tucking his blanket around him she had gone to freshen up. Twenty minutes later Prachi had left the premises with a very sleepy Sumonto bundled in the back seat, she had instructed the servant to take special care of Milind explaining him the dosage needed to be administered to Milind at an interval of five hours. As she sat peeking out of the car window disinterestedly Proteek had called out to her "Milind hii hai na...." he had questioned without hesitation. She had turned her pale face to his staring him in the eyes he knew the truth how and why was unecessary the bottom line was he had known. "Haan" Prachi had replied truthfully lying was not an option over the five years Prachi had missed everyone except Neev because Proteek had never let her feel as if she lacked a friend in life."To phir kiya socha hai tumney?" Proteek had inquired again" Prachi sensed his voice was a note lower than earlier. "Kuch nahin.... meri kuch samajh nahin aa raha" she had confided in him all of it the pain, the anguish, Milind's misery and most of all his accusations. Proteek hated to see her this way but he knew he was the only one now who could bring them back together. Why he wanted them back was a mystery in itself since he knew he loved Prachi from every pore of his being but then she had never reciprocated his approaches. She had always been true to her husband the only man she had loved and held dear to her heart even today. Proteek understood that in course of time Prachi would come to despise him hate him even but he had no other choice he had to do it.
Stepping out of the car together they had entered the house where his mother awaited them "Itni subah subah kahaan chaley gaye they tum dono?" she had asked pleasantly "Bas maa aj puja rakhwai thi Sumonto key liye to iss liye" Proteek had lied while Prachi had looked at him with gratitude. As his mother turned away Proteek saw Prachi mouth "Thankyou" to him causing him to smile. That afternoon Proteek had visited Milind "Ab kaisi tabiyat hai aapki?" he had smiled at a distraught Milind lying in his bed looking feeble and stricken. "Main theek huun aap bataiye kaisey aana hua?" he had tried to smile back at him. "Kal Sumonto ka janam din hai, waisey kal to nahin hai per hum mana rahey hain iski birthday waaley din issey chot lag gayi thii is liye hum mana nahin sakey." Proteek had noticed Milind's eyes glint with pleasure "Aap ko to aana hoga party main... aapkey bina family adhuri raheygi" Proteek had stated mildly inviting Milind to the party the next day. "Ab fatafat theek ho jaiyye betey ka birthday jo celebrate kerna hai" Proteek had laughed good naturedly extending his hand to grasp Milind's for a firm shake. Milind had been left pondering he didn't want to create problems for Prachi or his son but his son was celebrating his birthday his fifth but for Milind it was his first. He alone knew how he had longed for this day to celebrate his flesh and blood living and breathing yet today he would have to attend the occassion as a guest. Tears sprung in his eyes which he had wiped away angrily he hated Prachi for doing this to him for depriving him of his right on his son but fate had never been kind to him it was always one loss or the other. When Kaka had brought in his medicines after his breakfast he had taken them readily he needed to be well to attend the party.
Dasgupta Nibash glittered with lights Proteek felt queasy tonight was showdown how he wished he didn't have to do what he planned on doing but he knew Prachi well enough to know that she felt too indebted to him to do anything on her own. He could see their entire lives being ruined just because Prachi felt he had helped her and supported her though the truth was that they both had helped each other and it was time Prachi returned to her life the one she remembered each day and prayed and hoped to live again. "Sumonto tayyar ho gaye?" Suproteek had whispered cautiously, Sumonto had turned around to see Suproteek gesture him from the balustrade by the stairs. "Woh dekh rahey ho Horida ney aaj special kachori banayi hai teri bithday key liye lekin kakima ney saari khud key liye rakh lii hai" he had informed him in low tones. "Meri birthday key liye banaya hai or Kakima ney ley leen saari?" Sumonto had confirmed in a hoarse whisper. "Haan ab hum kaisey khaeingey Sumonto" Suproteek had whined eyeing the delicious kachoris his mouth watering at the very mention of them. "Bas tuu dekh main kiya kerta huun" Sumonto had cleverly descended the stairs and had hidden behind the thick curtains in the hallway ducking under the table he had made sure the coast was clear before grabbing a handful of kachoris he had gestured Souproteek to join him in his hideout but his brother did not budge smacking his forehead in frustration he had tried to return to the safety of the corner by the balustrade where Souproteek awaited him. Coming out from under the table he had steadied himself clutching the katchoris but little did he know that Kakimaa stood right beside him eyeing him mercilessly she had heard a rustling under the covers and had suspected it to be him. Having known his adventurous and naughty nature she had decided to keep an eye on him as Sumonto tried to hide the kachoris in his small hands Tanushree had held his ear cruelly.
"Kiya kar rahey they neechay chup ker or haath main kiya hai?" she had twisted his ear menacingly. "Aah Kakimaa choro mujhey " Sumonto screamed in agony, the hall was filled with guests assembled there to celebrate Sumonto's birthday. Milind stood in a corner observing his son his blood boiled to see Tanushree twist his ear but he remained silent fuming inwardly he couldn't do or say anything he knew one wrong move on his part and Prachi would consider him at fault not that he cared for her but he understood Sumonto would never accept him as his father and that was the bottom line. He could only be the child's friend for him but Proteek occupied the position of a father in his son's eyes and he was helpless in that regard he could not make the five year old believe the grim joke fate had played with him. His grip tightened around the glass he held his palm aching as his wounds crushed under the force her exerted on them. He had decided to turn away when he saw Proteek saunter forward slapping Sumonto hard on the cheek he had ordered him to apologize to his Kakimaa. "Per Papa mainey to kuch nahin kiya..." Sumonto had yelled at which Proteek had slapped him again forcefully. Enough was enough Milind could not see his son being beaten by an imposter posing as his father as he stepped forward in the light he saw Prachi run upto Proteek. "Proteek yeh kiya ker rahey hain aap?" she had shrieked in terror shielding Sumonto from him. "Tamasha khatam ker raha huun Prachi" he had breathed heavily. Prachi had no clue of the plan Proteek had cooked up in his mind to unite Prachi with Milind, "Proteek kyun maara aap ney issey aap ney iss per kabhi haath nahin uthaya" she had protested vehemently embracing her son who stood shocked on being slapped by his father. A father who had never laid a finger on him "Aaj tak nahin maara issi liye dimagh kharab ho gaya hai isska, mainey hamesha issey apney betey sey zyaada pyaar kiya issey chaha lekin aaj yeh andaaza ho gaya hai mujhey keh apna khoon apna hota hai or paraya, paraya hii rehta hai". A dead silence had prevailed over the guests who stood tantalized by the new information what Proteek had meant to say was that Sumonto was not his blood then who did the child belong to.... out of the corner of his eyes Proteek had seen Milind shift his weight uneasily kuch to bolo Milind. Proteek had prayed inwardly bolo keh tum isskey baap yeh bacha tumhara hai bolo nahin to aaj buhut saarey dil tuut jaayeingey sirf meri wajah sey.....hoping that Milind would come forward and declare his rights on what was his own.
Part 8
Prachi stood sobbing as Sumonto hugged her in misery it hurt him to be treated this way true he was naughty but his father had never reprimanded him earlier that too so brutally. Milind awaited Prachi to say something but she stood numb with confusion what had suddenly gotten into Proteek. Proteek's mother had then come forward "Proteek yeh kiya tareeqa hai bachey key saath pesh aaney ka?" she had chided him infront of the guests present. "Bas maa ab mujh sey natak nahin hota...... thak gaya huun main is sab sey" he had cried in frustration. "Kaisa natak... tum kiya baat ker rahey ho mujhey kuch samajh nahin aa raha" his mother looked at him in bewilderment all this was beyond her understanding and reasoning. "Maa Panchi ka affair chal raha hai puchiye iss sey kal raat kahaan thi yeh?" Proteek had sneered mercilessly at a huddled Prachi who looked at him as if she'd just been thrown down an abyss this was too much to handle for her. "Proteek.... yeh kiya ho gaya hai aapko?" she had questioned him in disbelief this could not be happening what was wrong with Proteek. He knew perfectly well where she had been and why. Milind's condition had been terrible and her heart had refused to leave him that way lonely and unattended by family she had explained everything to Proteek and now he stood there accusing her of being unfaithful. "Proteek beta hosh main to ho yeh kaisi behki behki baatein ker rahey ho tum..." senior Mrs Dasgupta had scolded him it scared her to think of the consequences Proteek's accusations might have on his marital life little had she known how many deaths Proteek had died in that one instant. "Main sach keh raha huun maa yeh kal raat Milind Mishra key ghar thii aapko yaqeen nahin aata to puch lein us sey yaheen hai woh bhi..." he had pionted at Milind who stood there looking black as thunder. It had taken every ounce of Milind's patience to stop himself from punching Proteek's jaw so hard he'd have lost all his teeth in one blow. He stood there with his fists balled his feral eyes ready to burn Proteek alive, how dare he accuse Prachi of infidelity.
"Puchiye maa iss sey agar main jhuut bol raha huun to...." Proteek had pulled Milind by the arm in the midst of the drama, casting one muderous look at Prachi Milind had turned to face Proteek. "Haan kal raat Prachi merey saath thi.... mil gaya jawab" he had stated icily. Prachi had stared at both the men ready to wreak havoc on her life all she had wanted was happiness for all and now she was responsible for everyone's heartache. A dead silence prevailed over the audience while Tanushree smiled jubilantly today she'd won the battle she was right about Panchi being a two faced selfish woman and tonight they'd gotten proof of that. "Dekha mummji main aap sey hamesha kehti thi yeh Panchi kisi kaam ki nahin eik din zarur humarey parivaar ka naam badnaam kareygi or aaj dekhiye iss ney wohi kiya hai" she had instigated her mother in law against Prachi who stood like a criminal being convicted for a capital charge.
"Ab chup kyun khari ho batao sab ko kal kiya ker rahi thi tum Milind key ghar main" Proteek had probed Prachi who had cast one sad look in his direction. "Bakwaas band ker apni aisa kuch nahin hua jaisa tuu soch raha hai" Milind had intervened angrily no matter how mad he was at Prachi he could not stand and see her being charged for such serious crimes. "Haan tum to yehi kaho gey ayyashi jo ker rahey they iss key saath tumhain to aag lagey gii hii" Proteek had remarked snidely. "Kiya bola tuuney saaley" Milind had held Proteek roughly by the collar when Prachi had come running to his aid "Nahin Milind chor dijiye inhain" she pleaded crying at the sudden turn of events. Miind had cast a bloody look at her "Iss parivaar or iss ghatia aadmi key liye chora tuuney mujhey Prachi?" Milind had inquired her furiously "Jisko terey per eik lamhey ka bharosa nahin. Arey main samajhta tha tuu or mera beta yahaan kam az kam khush to raheingey lekin nahin saala iss sey to behter tha main tujhey dhundta hii nahin Prachi .... paanch saal teri talaash main bhatakta raha iss yaqeen key saath keh tuu jahaan bhi hogi mera intizaar ker rahi hogi per aaj ehsaas hua keh tujhey kabhi mera intizaar tha hii nahin" he had held her forcefully by her arms. "Batati kyun nahin keh yeh jo bol raha hai jhuut hai humara eik jayez rishta hai jisey tuuney duniya key saamney najaayaz bana diya hai.... bol Prachi, bol nahin to aaj jaan sey maar duunga main tujhey or phir apney aap ko saala saara qissa hii khatam." 'Milind humara rishta ab bhi jayez hai main ab bhi aapki patni huun Milind" she had tried to explain him the facts turning to Proteek she addressed him staidly.
"Aap ney to saath nibhaney ka vaada kiya tha Proteek afsos aap vaada nahin nibha sakey. Mujhey dukh hai keh mainey apney pati key dard ko un dekha kiya sirf aapkey parivaar kii khatir aapkey betey key liye jo mujhey apni maa maanta hai. Aapko kiya haq hai mujhsey yeh sawaal kerney ka..... aapkey or merey darmiaan to kabhi koi rishta tha hii nahin, ghalati meri hai jis ney aap main eik dost ko dhunda lekin aap to dost bhi nahin ban paaye." Milind's head had whipped in Prachi's direction what was she talking about what the hell was going on thankfully Proteek's mother had asked the question instead of him. "Yeh kiya keh rahi hai Proteek kaunsa rishta kaisi dosti tum log kiya baat ker rahey ho mujhey kuch samajh nahin aa raha." Proteek had smiled sadly "Sorry maa yeh sab natak kerna para mujhey warna Panchi kabhi Prachi nahin ban paati". He had enlightened them all on how fate had made them meet, his real wife Panchi's death in the train accident and Prachi's decision to help him raise Souproteek. "Per Proteek aap ko yeh sab kerney kii kiya zarurat thi aap mujh sey keh detey" Prachi had complained in anguish. "Main keh deta tum chali jao or tum maan leti Prachi?" Proteek had smiled ... "Nahin na ...kyunki tumharey liye merey parivvar key ehsan zyaada maainey rakhtey hain ... per sach to yeh hai keh tumhara farz tumharey parivaar ki taraf bhi hai. Us din jab mainey tumhain Milind key saath dekha tha tabhii mainey faisla ker liya tha keh tumko tumharey parivaar sey zarur milaunga. I'm sorry agar mainey tumhara dil dukhaya to".
Milind stood silent it was clear to him Prachi had never married Proteek just lived with him faking to be his wife to raise their child Sumonto in a good atmosphere. It killed him to think that Prachi had not considered his plight as genuine his pain and yearning for his family not even worth a thought. She had thought it best to let things carry on as they were why did she not once pay any heed to his suffering if Proteek hadn't instigated her she'd never have accepted to the world they she was still legally Mrs Milind Mishra. What hurt him most was the way his child had suffered at the hands of a lie, a lie he'd been living since birth. Feeling totally lost and confounded he had left the premises in silence he simply didn't feel like talking to anyone specially Prachi, sitting in his car he awaited her. After a few minutes Prachi had emerged escorted by Proteek's family she hugged each of the family members kissing little Suproteek who could not make himself part with his mother and brother. Sumonto too was adamant on being left behind all this had made Milind fret more than ever he cursed the night Prachi had decided to leave him, after her flight he had managed to find the truth about Mallika. Neev had filled him in on the details and Milind had forgiven Prachi that same instant he understood her reasons for leaving him his sole ambition to bring her back home. He had not lost touch from his own family in all these years he talked regularly to Baba who was now tired of waiting for his son to return and had stopped asking him the same. Sukriti had in the meantime given birth to a baby girl named Sawera Saket had divorced her and she had married Alaap finally finding marital bliss at last. Daadi had passed away and Premlata too had grown of age many nights he had cried thinking of all that he was missing on but his determination to find Prachi never let him turn back Neev had been extremely helpful in all this period he had trained Alaap to handle business effectively and had recently left for the States himself. Prachi had slid in beside him making a crying Sumonto sit at the back Milind had throttled the engine on a wordless journey back home. He'd have their tickets by the next day and soon they would be back in Mumbai amidst their real family who had long awaited them.
Last part.
It had been two months since they had returned to Shah mansion and Bombay, Prachi's family had been overwhelmed with joy to see her alive. Sumonto's presence had doubled their happiness Baba couldn't help but hug the child warmly when he first laid eyes on him. "Bilkul Milind jaisa hai" he had smiled at Prachi, Premlata though unhappy with Prachi's sudden flight had forgiven her after hearing her story. Alaap and Sukriti had welcomed all three of them warmly Savera was Sumonto's age a year older to him. Everything had returned back to normal what had not returned was the smile on Milind's face it seemed to have vanished forever. He hadn't spoken to Prachi since the night he brought her home she had tried countless times to make conversation with him but all her efforts seemed in vain as he remained silent or left the place she occupied. He had not even let her stay in the same room as him she slept in the nursery with their son. Initially Baba had tried to make him change his behaviour but he had silenced him saying it was his own matter and that he'd deal with it his way. Finally everyone had simply given up it was clear Milind was in no mood to forgive Prachi anytime soon. Sumonto had been admitted in a posh school the child had been ripped away from the family he considered his own he felt lost and lonely refusing to acknowledge the Shahs as his real family. He would scream and shout in misery asking Prachi to take him back to his brother and father, his daadi and chachu. Prachi was aware that her mistakes over the past years had taken root and would not be corrected easily. She explained to Sumonto that Milind was his father and that the family they left behind was not his, alas biology was not something the five year old could understand that soon. One such morning when Sumonto refused to drink milk Prachi had tried coaxing him but he wouldn't relent resulting in her threatening him "Sumonto main Papa sey bol duungi tum dudh nahin pii rahey" she had told him. Milind had ascended the stairs to join them at the table when Sumonto had answered her "Yeh merey Papa nahin hain ker do meri shikayat in se mujhey koi farq nahin perta". "Sumonto aisa nahin boltey yehi tumharey Papa hain" Prachi had chided him on his rude behaviour. "Yeh merey Papa nahin hain, nahin hain, nahin hain" he had wailed Prachi had tried to make him stop when a furious Milind had stopped her. "Buhut ho gaya yeh natak" he had seethed "Terey bolney sey woh maan jaiyega main uska baap huun? Tuu ney ussey Proteek ko bhi baap bolna sikhaya na, to ab agar woh usko apna baap maanta hai to ghalat kiya hai? Teri hii dee hui seekh hai na yeh" he had criticised her. "Aaj key baad issey kuch bolney kii zarurat nahin" he had warned her picking up Sumonto in his arms. "Tuu mujhey apna dost samajhta hai na?" he had asked his son gently. "Haan" he had replied instantly "To bas phir hum achey dost hain or jab tak tera khud ka mann nahin chahey tuu mujhey Papa mat bulana theek hai" he had suggested to which Sumonto had assented readily.
Time had passed quickly it had been six months after their arrival Sumonto had started accepting his surroundings bit by bit. He had become much more tamed and had started calling Milind "Papa" which meant he had accepted him as his father much to his joy. Milind had told Sumonto that he had let Prachi take him away to stay with Dasguptas for a few years as he was not in the country the reason he had missed out on him. He had promised to take him to meet Suproteek next month. Rhitvick and Sawera's presence had helped him in getting over his past life to some extent. Milind was not angry at Prachi anymore rather very disappointed he had thought he held utmost importance in her life sadly that had not been the case. Her denial to accompany him back to Mumbai had left a deep scar in his heart one that hurt everytime he thought about it. His five years of solitude had not made him as disgusted with life as he was now. He had everything he had wanted a wonderful house a family and a child but it was his love that had him shattered to the core. He had started coming home late spending ample time in the office making sure the whole house was asleep till he arrived. His holidays were reserved for his son every Sunday he'd take him out with him on picnics or outings not casting a second glance at Prachi. It hurt Prachi to think that she did not amount to even a servant in that house Milind conversed freely with everyone her family his family their son the cook the driver everyone but her. He simply did not acknowledge her presence around him. Premlata had tried talking to Milind but he would not concede "Uss ghar ko chorney ko tayyar nahin thii woh or agar Proteek nahin kehta to shayad woh kabhi nahin aati merey saath. Uskey liye main kuch nahin to merey liye bhi woh koi maainey nahin rakhti" he had informed his mother in law painfully. "Puchiye uss sey jab main uss key saamney tha, uss Proteek sey uska ki bandhan nahin tha to phir kyun nahin aayi woh merey paas.... koi jawab nahin hoga usskey paas" he had smirked. The truth was it hurt him to act indifferently to the woman he loved from the very core of his being. He often saw the light shining in her room as he walked up the steps late at night she indeed waited up for him though she never realized he noticed. She would keep his food ready for him though he never touched it even though he didn't eat at the office. Each morning she'd leave his tea in his room before he awoke but he never drank it, it felt as if both played a game with each other. Both were aware of the suffering the other went at their cost but refused to accept it neither giving in to their longing. Prachi realized now how stupid she had been keeping Proteek's family's welfare above her own family. She had thought Milind would forgive her as he always did but this time it was different, this time he had had enough.
Karvachaut was being celebrated that night she had fasted for Milind he knew she would be but he didn't want to go home. He remembered the first year of their marraige when she had fasted he had been angry then too but she had waited for him patiently. One of Prachi's best qualities was her patience her perseverance of his actions no matter how harsh or brutal he had been to her she always bore it in silence. Right now too she had hoped he would not dissapoint her and would come so that she would break her fast. Milind had not wanted to but had been obliged to return early that night he could not forget the fact that she was afterall his wife, the mother of his child. She had been the one who had kept his child safe in her womb giving it life, today if he was glad to be a father it was her doing. Parking the car at the gate he had stepped in the house everyone was at the terrace frowning slightly he had made his way up there. He saw Sukriti break her fast as Alaap held the vessel to her lips, his eyes searched Prachi who stood in a corner looking at him from afar. He had walked up to her no words were exchanged but she knew he had come for her, she had completed the rituals and he had made her drink water. Placing the pot back in her platter he had left as abruptly as he had come she stared at his broad back in misery he had just come to fulfill his responsibility nothing else. But tonight she wanted answers enough was enough how long did he intend to torture her .... a lifetime. If he didn't want her in his life he'd have to say so she had followed him down the stairs to his room where he stood semi covered. He had taken off his coat and shirt and now stood in his vest trying to find his kurta when she had run in with bated breath turning around he watched her with feral eyes his eyes speaking yet his lips silent. "Milind aap kab tak mujhey saza deingey?" she had asked him he had raised his eyebrows in wonder before turning back to the wardrobe. "Milind main aap sey kuch puch rahi huun kab tak khamosh raheingey aap? Jaantey hain kitni takleef hoti hai jab aap merey saath sath khud ko bhi saza detey hain?" she had inquired nearly in tears. "Kis ney kis ko saza dii hai tuu achi tarah jaanti hai" he had finally spoken. "Main maanti huun meri ghalati hai per kiya ab aap mujhey saari umer iss key liye zimmedaar thehraiyengey?" she had questioned him again softly this time her head bent low. "Mainey to tujhey kuch nain kaha, kabhi tujhey daanta nahin, kisi baat ka zimmedar nahin thehraya ya tujhey terey parivaar sey milana bhi ghalati ho gayi meri" he had counter questioned boring her eyes in hers. "Milind main aapkey pyaar key bina nahin reh sakti.... kiya aap mujhey maaf nahin ker saktey" she had pleaded catching his arm. "Yeh sab agar tuu mujh sey paanch saal pehley kehti to main khushi sey paagal ho jaata per ab mujh per in sab baaton ka koi asar nahin hota, jao yahaan sey" he had informed her laughing a soft hollow laugh before entering the washroom. Prachi realized he would not consider anything she said as true hr head started swimming as tears rolled down her cheeks. She stood swaying in the air for a few minutes before falling unconscious on the floor. "I think it's fatigue Mr Mishra make her eat something after she gets up" the doctor had told Milind who had escorted him outside. He had emerged from the washroom to see her lie on the floor immediately he had dialled the doctor who had responded efficiently.
He sat beside her on the bed taking her hand in his own she had driven him mad first with love then with anger now with fear. He hoped she'd gain conciousness soon, gently smoothing her tresses how he wished he could tell her how much he loved her. How he had died a million deaths to see her with Proteek, not being able to call her his own but it was useless. He could never explain it all to her so it was fine if she considered him heartless and ruthless atleast they stayed under the same roof. He had tried to pull away his hand from hers when he felt her fingers tighten arond his wrist stopping him from moving further. "Mujhey chor ker kyun jaa rahey hain Milind? Eik ghalati to mainey kii thi dusri aap kyunker rahey hain?" she had whispered a tear had dropped from her eye vanishing in the pillow beneath her head. He had turned to face her she looked pale and defeated "Prachi khana khaa ley" he had said gently. "Nahin" she had murmured "Nahin khaongi khana aap ko meri zarurat nahin , main jeena nahin chahti" she had closed her eyes turning her face away from him crying openly. "Kis ney kaha mujhey teri zarurat nahin" he had asked her lovingly the truth was he had died a million deaths when he had seen her on the floor. Every pore in his body had cursed him for behaving indifferently with her chiding him for his negligence and now that she was finally awake he wouldn't let her be snatched away from him again. Pulling him closer to her he had made her face him wiping away her tears with his lips Prachi had sighed feeling them on her skin it had been so long he had touched her that way. She lay reeling in pleasure "Aapney mujhey maaf ker diya Milind?" se had asked happiness evident from her voice. "Haan " he had sighed "Ab please mujhey chor ker mat jaana Prachi terey bina main buhut akeyla ho gaya tha" he had confessed honestly." As the night had progressed so had their love both had tried their best to mask their desire for each other but tonight there were no restrains. Milind had not wasted another moment in capturing her soft lips smothering her with passionate kisses while she helped him undress her. There was no right moment just the one they had with them, five long years without each other had made them treasure each other. Milind's hands had pulled off her lehenga, her jewellery everything freeing himself of his kurta he pressed her silken skin to his own. Prachi had let him lead her to a magical world one where they both existed nothing else she let his hands explore her body revelling in his touch gasping in pleasure. He had finally rolled her under him entering her, making her his letting her whisper his name is ecstacy as they became one heart, body and soul.....

Epilogue

Milind paced the corridor visibly tormented while he heard Prachi moan in pain in the room near him but there was nothing he could do. She was having their second child and it was hell for him, he wondered by the process had to be so miserable wasn't there an easier way to have babies. Premlata watched him run his fingers through his hair impatiently this was taking too long though the truth was Prachi had just started having her labour pains. Premlata smiled she knew he loved her very much and couldn?t bear to think of her in pain because of him, it had been Milind who had decided to have another baby since he had missed out on Sumonto's childhood moreover Sumonto was old enough to have another sibling. The doctor had appeared then flustered and cranky "Mr Mishra it seems we have complications if the situation arises we may have to choose one of them either your wife or the baby" she had informed a shocked Milind who stood there white as a sheet. And before he could even decide the words had slipped out of his mouth "Save my wife doctor, save her" he had blurted full aware of what he stood to lose but even if he had been asked to make the same decision all over again he very well knew he'd have chosen her. She was everything he had and life without her was something he couldn't even imagine. "I'm coming in" he had informed the doctor before following her inside. Prachi lay exhausted on the hospital bed she gripped the sides of the iron bed firmly wincing in pain as she braved another wave of pain, tears were streaming down her eyes as she bit her lip in an attempt to stifle a scream. Watching Milind enter had soared her confidence "Milind' she had whispered in anguish closing her eyes as she felt his hand on her cheek. "Main huun na Prachi terey saath, terey paas" he had consoled her as she took his hand in hers closing her fingers tightly around it whimpering in acknowledgement. It was a torturous half hour for both Milind and Prachi before finally their daughter had graced the world with her presence. All the while Milind's heart had beat fast and hard he had witnessed how difficult and miraculous the feat of giving birth actually was praying that both mother and child would be safe. Prachi had been shifted to another room she had been drugged to wear off the excrutiating pain that coursed through her body. A nurse had handed a tiny wrapped form to Milind as he stood watching over Prachi. The baby was not only beautiful she was everything he had wanted in his child she looked exactly like Prachi.

A jet black mop of straight hair peeped from under the snowy cloth her heavy eyes were fringed with the most delicate row of finest eye lashes he had ever seen. Her perfect cupid lips were something she had taken from him, the small nose was a replica of her mother's so were the soft cheeks. She was perfect, Milind pushed back the cloth to find her tiny fingers balled in a tight fist he uncurled them slowly as she tried to open her eyes in an attempt to look at him. Milind had felt a tear escape his eye vanishing in the cloth wrapping the baby. "Kaisi hai?" Premlata hai asked as she stood watching him. "Apni maa jaisi hai" he had smiled looking at a sleeping Prachi who looked at peace motherhood had granted her a special glow that lit her face then. Bending down Milind had kissed her forehead and then had kissed his daughter they both were special to him.

Later that evening Sumonto had accompanied his father to the hospital "Papa main gurya sey khelun?" he had asked Milind who had him perched on his knee while he cradled the new born in his arms with Milind embracing both of them protectively. "Beta abhi to buhut choti hai yeh khel nahin sakeygi terey saath" he had chuckled humorously. "To kiya yeh baatein bhi nahin kareygi?" Sumonto had asked surprised at a sister who was incapable of any fun activity. "Nahin abhi nahin kareygi" he had smiled kissing his son on the forehead. Sumonto had initially resisted on considering himself a part of the family but he was very much aware of the fact now that Milind was his father and that the Dasguptas were his temporary family. Milind had found it cruel to deprive the child of his past relations even though fake, he'd take him to meet Suproteek sometimes and this year Suproteek had come over to Bombay to spend a part of his summer holidays with Sumonto. Time had healed his wounds and Milind had learnt to forgive and forget Prachi had not let him question any of her acts again. She had been genuinely depressed to see him ignorant of her and had taken it upon herself to soothe him in every possible way. They had decided to have another child then to celebrate their reunion and a few months later Prachi had been declared pregnant much to their elation. "Yeh kuch nahin kareygi kheleygi nahin, baat nahin kareygi to kiya faida aisi behen ka" Sumonto had protested unhappily. He had thought his sister would be like Savera energetic and bubbly ready to assist him in any mischief he had hoped to get even with Rhitvick on all his past naughty tricks with his sister's help, but now that he saw she was tiny and fragile certainly not mischief material he was thoroughly upset. Milind had smoothed back Sumonto's curls "Thora intizaar ker ley phir yeh sab kuch kareygi, kheleygi bhi baatein bhi kareigi tereyko bhaiyya bhi boleygi" he had tried to console his son. "Kab boleygi? one two three four days key baad?" Sumonto had counted the days on his fingers and Milind had laughed aloud at his innocence.

Prachi had woken up to see her family await her her mother and father in law had both blessed her, alaap and Sukriti had gifted the baby lots of accessories and had brought fresh flowers for her. Rhitvick and Savera fought over the baby's name while Sumonto declared he held the right to name her since she was his sister she noticed everyone was present except her husband the one she longed to see. She smiled and laughed with her family as they talked non stop about the tough time she was going to have with two naughty children to look after. Soon they had left the baby was fed by her and now lay asleep in her cradle she wondered what Milind was upto and why he hadn't come to meet her. She felt deeply indebted to him for being a part in this creation and for standing by her in her time of need. Closing her eyes she sat rocking the cradle gently resting against the iron frame of the bed when she felt a movement beside her. Before she had a chance to open her eyes a pair of soft lips had captured her supple ones in a deep long kiss. She didn't need to open her eyes to confirm that Milind sat beside her putting her arms around his neck she leaned into him reciprocating his kiss with equal fervour. He had released her moments later peering in her hazel eyes as she sat smiling at him "Kahaan reh gaye they aap? Main kab sey intizaar ker rahi thi" she had inquired love evident in her tone of complaint. 'Hmm thank you Prachi" he had whispered in a voice laden with gratitude hugging her tightly she had gently caressed his cheek with her own. "Humari beti kaisi lagi aapko?" she had asked not being able to suppress the smile that emerged on her face when she saw him stare at the sleeping form in the cradle. "Buhut pyaari hai, bilkul terey jaisi" saying so he had stood up and had picked up the baby in his arms bringing it back to the bed he sat near Prachi who had placed a gentle hand on her child feeling it's soft skin. "Isska naam kiya rakheingey?" Prachi had asked Milind who kissed her on the cheek this time. "Sumonto keh raha tha Katrina rakheingey ussey buhut pasand hai na woh" Milind had joked. "Koi Katrina nahin rakheingey meri beti ka naam or yeh ussko pasand hai ya aapko?" knowing full well how much Milind liked the actress. Milind had laughed aloud winking at her "Acha hai na humari beti bhi usski tarah dikheygi pyaari pyaari" he had added oil to the fire. "Mainey naam soch liya hai wohi rakheingey" Prachi had retorted slightly irritated with Katrina's mention. "Kiya naam socha hai?" Milind had asked enjoying her ire "Mahek" she had told him jubilantly. "Arey koi perfume hai jo makehti raheygi" Milind had rejected the idea outrightly. "Naam yehi hoga bas" Prachi had decided stubbornly taking the baby from him. "Itna ghussa" Milind had teased her encircling them both in his strong hold "Aapka naam M sey hai to isska naam bhi M sey hona chahiye na" she had explained the reason why she had chosen the name. "Phir to P sey bhi rakh saktey hain" Milind had suggested "Woh duusrey waaley key liye" Prachi had said unaware of her comment's effect on him. Milind had smiled "Acha duusra bhi chahiye tujhey balkehh teesra ho ga na woh to" Milind had grinned at her as she turned a deeper shade. "Mera matlab" she began when he had turned her face to him. "Tuu jo kaheigi wohi rakheingey.Khush!" and she had smiled as she felt him reach for her lips again. He had gifted her a diamond necklace that he had seen her eye at a shop a few weeks ago as he clasped the lock close she touched it with admiration. "Aap ney merey liye khareeda thank you Milind" she had smiled with moist eyes "Tuu ney jo mujhey diya hai Prachi usskey aagey to yeh kuch bhi nahin" he had turned to look at his daughter cradled in Prachi's lap. "Mahek" Milind had smiled tracing her soft contours lovingly finally his life was filled with fragrance one that he knew would last for a lifetime.
